However, in performing this role (which includes teaching, research activities and publication) lecturers face huge working pressure, which requires them to have skills related to emotional intelligence. This paper will discuss the relationship between emotional intelligence and lecturer performance at one of the public higher education institutions (HEIs) in Malaysia. The paper uses primary data, such as questionnaires, to analyze the relationship between emotional intelligence and lecturer performance. For this study, convenience sampling was used as a sampling method, and 200 respondents participated in the study. The main findings of this study indicate that there is a significant relationship between emotional intelligence and lecturer performance. This paper presents the implication of emotional intelligence and its relationship to lecturer performance in the field of higher education.

These chapters chart the direction of future research in affect and leadership in four main areas. First, several of these chapters make a convincing argument that leaders use emotional labor and other forms of emotional displays to influence followers and team members. Leaders may use emotional labor to manage relational identities, or to create favorable impressions on followers and to create trust. Leaders' active emotional displays increase vision related performance and perception of transformational leadership. Second, one chapter reveals how emotions play an important role in leadership at every level, from within-person to organization-wide leadership. Leader's emotional labor plays an important role in several of these levels, with the exact method of performing emotional labor varying by level. This is what makes education have meaning and determines its usefulness, and it is only in this context that we can say that education prepares one for life and its challenges. Directly or indirectly, emotional intelligence makes a contribution to preparation for living in the modern world. Educational enterprise is not exclusive to the activities that take place within the four walls of a formal classroom. I accept the educational learning theory which says that learning is everywhere for a conscious mind, though it always needs to be tuned and guided. In fact there are a huge number of para-teachers, such as parents, coaches, mentors, pastors, inspirers, trainers and leaders, who do not know the extent to which their day-to-day teachings and drilling of others affect the psychology of society at large. This is because the teaching, mentoring and coaching of such para-teachers influences the emotional intelligence of their followers and learners, most often in a positive way. Emotional intelligence was a ground-breaking theory developed by Daniel Goleman, not only on to teach how best to teach and inspire, but also to make an important link between the learning achievement of the classroom and success in real life situations. This is called knowledge transfer in education.

Book excerpt: The healthcare profession already benefits from the growing studies of emotional intelligence (EI) even though this aspect of research is still at "its infancy stage (Codier, 2010)." Nursing educators are committed to two aspects of their profession--the nursing practice and instruction. In the course of practicing their dual roles, nurse educators meet different individuals with different emotions alongside their own emotions. This paper investigated the relationship between the EI of nurse educators and their teaching performance (TP) in the context of classroom education in the undergraduate nursing program. A descriptive correlational design was utilized to analyze data from purposively chosen sample of 66 nurse educators and 660 students in seven nursing institutions in Metro Manila. The professors assessed their own EI using Wong's Emotional Intelligence Scale (WEIS), while their TP was evaluated by the students using the Department of Defense Dependents Schools (DoDDS) Educator Performance Appraisal System. After analyzing data with Statistical Package for Social Sciences using descriptive statistics and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), findings revealed that the respondents are mostly female, married with the mean age of 39 and mean length of teaching experience of 9 years. Likewise, the nurse educators were found to have the same level of EI regardless of age, civil status, gender, and length of teaching experience. In addition, findings revealed that the EI of nurse educators and their TP have no significant relationship. Among the four dimensions of EI, only the "others emotion appraisal" (OEA) was significant predictor of TP as evaluated by the students. The EI and TP have a positive significant relationship but only with respect to age and length of teaching experience of nurse educators. While EI may be gauged as useful in classroom in teacher-student relationship, professionalism is maintained by the nurse educators regardless of their EI.
