Book excerpt: Some colleagues from the Instituto de Arquitetos do Brasil – IAB (Brazilian Institute of Architects) and I spent some years organizing the 27th World Congress of Architects, initially planned to be held in July 2020 in Rio de Janeiro. However, the pandemic caught us along the way and we had to postpone the event until 2021. From March to July 2021, debates, conferences, lectures, exhibitions, films, and many other activities – almost all of them online – were carried out with hundreds of leading professionals and almost 100,000 participants from 195 countries. With such a diversity of prominent names, as we had intended, a unifying idea emerged: we are all together and it is up to us to contribute creating better, prettier, more climate-friendly, and less unequal cities. It did seem that the subject of the Congress (which was defined still in 2014, when Rio was elected as the host city) had been premonitory: "All the worlds. Just one world. Architecture 21". On the eve of his 100th birthday, French philosopher Edgar Morin drew attention to the possibility that the aftermath of the pandemic could give rise to new world-transforming forces, however fragile they might be. And that given this possibility, our path should be one of hope. This thought has inspired the World Congress of Architects and, somehow, also this book. I gathered a handful of texts and wrote a few others under the impact of the challenge to turn the 21st century into a more humane place. I state no thesis here, but rather a plea. I am very grateful to everyone who contributed to making this book a reality, starting from the initial (and continuous) motivation as offered to me by my dear Rosana Lanzelotte, from Musica Brasilis. I'd like to highlight the great performance of RioBooks' publisher Denise Corrêa, whom my colleague Verena Andreatta had recommended me, and the competence of a few others: architect Anita Di Marco's in the thematic review of this volume; Sylvia Cardim's in the sophisticated graphic design; my friend and colleague André Luiz Pinto's in selecting and treating the images presented here; my dearest old friend and great artist Thereza Miranda's inspiration for the presentation of the book; and finally Victor Burton's in conceiving the book cover. Book excerpt: Minas Gerais is a state in southeastern Brazil deeply connected to the nation’s slave past and home to many traditions related to the African diaspora. Addressing a wide range of traditions helping to define the region, ethnomusicologist Jonathon Grasse examines the complexity of Minas Gerais by exploring the intersections of its history, music, and culture. Instruments, genres, social functions, and historical accounts are woven together to form a tapestry revealing a cultural territory’s development. The deep pool of Brazilian scholarship referenced in the book, with original translations by the author, cites over two hundred Portuguese-language publications focusing on Minas Gerais. This research was augmented by fieldwork, observations, and interviews completed over a twenty-five-year period and includes original photographs, many taken by the author. Hearing Brazil: Music and Histories in Minas Gerais surveys the colonial past, the vast hinterland countryside, and the modern, twenty-first-century state capital of Belo Horizonte, the metropolitan region of which is today home to over six million. Diverse legacies are examined, including an Afro-Brazilian heritage, eighteenth- and nineteenth-century liturgical music of the region’s “Minas Baroque,” the instrument known as the viola, a musical profile of Belo Horizonte, and a study of the regionalist themes developed by the popular music collective the Clube da Esquina (Corner Club) led by Milton Nascimento with roots in the 1960s. Hearing Brazil champions the notion that Brazil’s unique role in the world is further illustrated by regionalist studies presenting details of musical culture.

This was one of the first virtual international meetings on psychology and COVID-19 in the world and brought together researchers and professionals from South, Central and North America in a single online event. The content of both volumes includes many of the first issues addressed by researchers, scholars, and practitioners across the Americas at the start of the pandemic – before vaccines, before knowledge of treatment and impact, before our worlds and daily lives were forever changed. Chapters in the first volume focus on the impacts of the pandemic in mental health, social and family dynamics, educational processes and the work of health professionals. Chapters in the second volume are dedicated to studies addressing the impacts of the pandemic in vulnerable populations; proposals of psychological interventions to deal with the distress caused by COVID-19; strategies of coping, resilience and adaptation; and the development of psychological instruments of measurement and assessments during the pandemic. The content of these two volumes marks a baseline for the collective work initiated by psychologists who came together to answer the call to combat the pandemic across the Americas. In that sense, both volumes are truly a “snapshot in time” that could help us assess in the future how much progress we have made to apply psychology to the pressing demands of our time.

We argue that there is an urgent need for a design strategy that provides an alternative for, on the one hand, a recipe in order to make the non-compact compact and, on the other, the simple inclusion of the condition of non-place, non-city and unbuilt in a new expanded epistemology of urbanism.

Given the fact that informal cities and settlements exceed the structures of order, control and homogeneity expected to be found in the formal city, the wide-ranging essays in this volume from disciplinary areas such as anthropology, architecture, history, cultural and urban studies, and sociology are concerned with the need to produce alternative methods of analysis in order to study the phenomenon of urban informality. Illustrated by case studies of several main cities and metropoles on the North Mediterranean coast, it introduces and critically analyses the latest theories and approaches to urban governance. It questions how the 'real' or socio-cultural notion of city seems to have been separated from that of the 'political' city and explores how more integrated socio-political forms might be developed. It looks at current structures, dynamics and cultures of governance in urban development and questions whether they are well adapted to new realities and challenges or whether there are significant imbalances causing limited or fragmented political-administrative visions. By considering both the long Mediterranean history along with the recent but enduring global economic and political developments, this book argues that Southern European cities will have to depend greatly upon its own socio-cultural networks, dynamics and cosmopolitan evolution, making the most of the region's characteristic urban strengths, as trading hubs, with rich hinterlands and large and varied population.
