They settled in York County, Pennsylvania, then Buckingham County, Virginia. His son, John Reid (1781-1866), was born in York County, Pennsylvania and married Jane Haircourt Noel. They later moved to Kentucky and then Vermillion County, Illinois where they joined the L.D.S. Church. He later died in Weber County, Utah. His second wife was Sarah Courter. Descendants lived in Utah, Idaho, and California.

In 1843 he married Elizabeth Cumming (1824-1910) of Monkton, Ayr, Scotland, who was the daughter of Lewis Cumming and Elisabeth Wilson. James and Elizabeth were the parents of nine children. They joined the LDS Church in Scotland and immigrated to America in 1856 and traveled by handcart accross the plains to Utah. They eventually settled in Smithfield, Cache Valley, Utah. Their many descendants live in Utah, Idaho, Montana and other parts of the western United States.
