Book Rehabilitation of Partially Disabled People

Download or read book Rehabilitation of Partially Disabled People written by S. Klosse and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handicapped and partly disabled workers constitute a major problem from a labour market policy point of view. In many European countries governments are puzzled by the question how to favour rehabilitation of these workers. Their physical or mental condition does not allow them to enter just every possible job available. So, this group needs additional attention compared to long term unemployed, ethnic minority workers and other groups with an unfavourable labour market position. Different countries, and within countries different industries and firms, seem to be more succesful when it comes to reintegration than others. This book discusses rehabilitation policies in different European countries and tries to answer the question why some are more and others are less succesful. In some countries rules and regulations are mostly preventive by nature, elsewhere reintegration is the principle goal. Countries also differ with respect to the responsibilities of national and local authorities and private companies, respectively. As the authors do not limit themselves to specific measures, but discuss these measures within the broader framework of legal and policy measures regarding disability the study offers interesting insights in what kind of measures are and can be taken in this field. Moreover, the authors - all of them national and international experts with respect to disability arrangements - discuss the limits and possibilities of the measures taken in the countries under study.

The book explains how to achieve recognition for this evolving field of study, how to set priorities, and how to improve the organization and administration of the numerous federal research programs in this area. The committee introduces the "enabling-disability process" model, which enhances the concepts of disability and rehabilitation, and reviews what is known and what research priorities are emerging in the areas of: Pathology and impairment, including differences between children and adults. Functional limitationsâ€"in a person's ability to eat or walk, for example. Disability as the interaction between a person's pathologies, impairments, and functional limitations and the surrounding physical and social environments.
