This set of papers written by a distinguished selection of international experts examines the nature of regulation, its evolution in particular sectors and its impact on social and economic equality. It draws on social theory concerned with the nature of regulation and order in modern societies as well as providing as a series of detailed analyses of particular forms of regulatory regimes in national and international contexts. This book, first published in 1999, should be of particular interest to management and business researchers, sociologists and political economists concerned with the process of regulation and its impact on organisations and management.

Book Regulation and Planning

Download or read book Regulation and Planning written by Yvonne Rydin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-30 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Regulation and Planning, planning scholars from the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Sweden, Canada, Australia, and the United States explore how planning regulations are negotiated amid layers of normative considerations. It treats regulation not simply as a set of legal guidelines to be compared against proposed actions, but as a social practice in which issues of governmental legitimacy, cultural understandings, materiality, and power are contested. Each chapter addresses an actual instance of planning regulation including, among others, a dispute about a proposed Apple store in a public park in Stockholm, the procedures by which building codes are managed by planners in Napoli, the role that design plays in regulating the use of public space in a new Paris neighbourhood, and the influence of plans on the regulation of development in Malmö and Cambridge. Collectively, the volume probes the institutions and practices that give meaning and consequence to planning regulations. For planning students learning about what it means to plan, planning researchers striving to understand the influence of planners on urban development, and planning practitioners interested in reflecting on practices that occupy a great deal of their time, this is an indispensable book.

Book The Regulation of Organised Civil Society

Download or read book The Regulation of Organised Civil Society written by Jonathan Garton and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2009-06-25 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although much has been written on organised civil society - the loose collective of organisations that operate outside the public sector, the private market and the family unit - over the past 30 years, there has been little jurisprudential analysis. This is in spite of the fact that a number of jurisdictions, including England, New Zealand, Northern Ireland and Scotland, have recently implemented major reforms to the regulatory frameworks in which civil society organisations operate, with a particular emphasis on the charitable sectors. Redressing the balance, this monograph considers from first principles when it is appropriate to regulate organised civil society and how that regulation might best be accomplished. Four broad issues are addressed: (a) whether the activities undertaken by civil society organisations are distinct from the activities undertaken by the state or the market, either because they are pursued in unique ways, or because they produce unique outcomes; (b) if so, whether it is justifiable to regulate organised civil society activities in a sector-specific way; (c) if it is, whether the peculiar characteristics of these activities make one type of regulation more appropriate than another; and (d) whether it is appropriate to distinguish between charities and other civil society organisations for regulatory purposes. The monograph integrates the traditionally separate disciplines of civil society theory and regulation theory to provide answers to these questions and advance a rudimentary theory of regulation specific to organised civil society.

Book Environmental Regulation Through Financial Organisations Comparative Perspectives on the Industrialised Nations

Download or read book Environmental Regulation Through Financial Organisations Comparative Perspectives on the Industrialised Nations written by Benjamin Richardson and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2002-02-13 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes a comparative perspective of practice in the European Union, North America, Japan and Australasia, arguing that existing legal reforms to promote sustainable development are unlikely to be successful unless environmental policy can be diffused and embedded in the financial services sector. This sector plays a crucial role in creating the financial conditions that allow much economic development to proceed. Financial markets are already highly regulated in pursuance of various public policy objectives, and there is scope to adapt existing regulation to incorporate environmental aspects into the financial services sector. In terms of specific reforms, the book focuses on the role of corporate environmental reporting, economic instruments and liability rules to provide a proper context for engaging financial organisations with the environment, as well as reforms to the system of prudential regulation that currently governs this sector. Beyond the focus on the financial services sector, the book raises complex questions regarding the relationship between the state and market institutions in environmental policy, and will appeal to scholars from a wide range of disciplines interested in problems of environmental governance.

Thereby, banking regulators can be classified due to their influence on regulatory decisions. Their influence runs from preparation across enforcement to control of regulatory decisions. Book Optimizing the Nation s Investment in Academic Research

Download or read book Optimizing the Nation s Investment in Academic Research written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2016-06-29 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research universities are critical contributors to our national research enterprise. They are the principal source of a world-class labor force and fundamental discoveries that enhance our lives and the lives of others around the world. These institutions help to create an educated citizenry capable of making informed and crucial choices as participants in a democratic society. However many are concerned that the unintended cumulative effect of federal regulations undercuts the productivity of the research enterprise and diminishes the return on the federal investment in research. Optimizing the Nation's Investment in Academic Research reviews the regulatory framework as it currently exists, considers specific regulations that have placed undue and often unanticipated burdens on the research enterprise, and reassesses the process by which these regulations are created, reviewed, and retired. This review is critical to strengthen the partnership between the federal government and research institutions, to maximize the creation of new knowledge and products, to provide for the effective training and education of the next generation of scholars and workers, and to optimize the return on the federal investment in research for the benefit of the American people.
