Book Index to Georgia s 1867 1868 Returns of Qualified Voters and Registration Oath Books White

Download or read book Index to Georgia s 1867 1868 Returns of Qualified Voters and Registration Oath Books White written by John David Brandenburg and published by Atlanta : [J.D. Brandenburg]. This book was released on 1995 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An index to two records that were created during the Reconstruction in Georgia as a result of legislation passed by the United States Congress. The Returns of Qualified Voters and Registration Oath Books are significant records because they locate both white and black males in Georgia during 1867 and 1868, a period of significant change after the Civil War and before the enumeration of the 1870 U.S. Census. Since the white registrants alone number over 100,000, we limited this index to them with the expectation of indexing the black males next. The Georgia Department of Archives and History, custodian of 144 volumes of Returns of Qualified Voters and 271 volumes of Registration Oath Books, has microfilmed both series in order to preserve them and give the public easier access to the information in them.--From introduction, p. ix.

Book Great Register of El Dorado County California 1867 With Supplemental List of 1868

Download or read book Great Register of El Dorado County California 1867 With Supplemental List of 1868 written by D. W. Standeford and published by . This book was released on 2017-06-10 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last-half of the 1800s, each California County periodically produced their Great Register, as required by legislation, and which published the County Voter Registration List for the specified period. At election time, published copies of these books were given to local precincts to verify voter registration, and following the election, most books were discarded or destroyed. The individual County Clerks of each county certified the publications as 'true and complete.' El Dorado County, California, was in the heart of 'Gold Country, ' during the great Gold Rush of 1849. Thousands of individuals, from all over the United States, descended upon this area in search of their fortune, and many remained following the bust. This 1867 Voter Registration for El Dorado County is a valuable resource for local historians and genealogists. The information it contains includes the names, ages, place of nativity, occupation, and place of residence of each registered voter in the County, and totals approximately 5,000 individuals. These books are rare and extremely difficult to locate. They do, however, provide researchers with valuable information often found only in the original records.

Download or read book Promises to Keep written by Donald G. Nieman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-02-03 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Widely considered the first history of US Constitutionalism that places African Americans at the center, Promises to Keep is a compelling overview of how conflict over African Americans' place in American society has shaped the Constitution, law, and our understanding of citizenship and rights. Both authoritative and accessible, this revised and expanded second edition incorporates key insights from the last three decades of scholarship and makes sense of recent developments in civil rights, from the War on Drugs to the rise of Black Lives Matter. Promises to Keep shows how African Americans have played a critical role in transforming the Constitution from a bulwark of slavery to a document that is truer to the nation's promise of equality. The book begins by examining debates about race from the Revolutionary Era at the Constitutional Convention and covers the establishment of civil rights protections during Reconstruction, the Jim Crow backlash, and the evolution of the civil rights movement, from the formation of the National Association for the Advancement for Colored People to legal victories and massive organized protests. Comprehensive in scope, this book moves from debates over slavery at the nation's founding to contemporary discussions of affirmative action, voting rights, mass incarceration, and police brutality. In the process, it provides readers with a historical perspective critical to understanding some of today's most important social and political issues.

Book One Person No Vote

Download or read book One Person No Vote written by Carol Anderson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-09-11 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As featured in the documentary All In: The Fight for Democracy Finalist for the PEN/John Kenneth Galbraith Award for Nonfiction Longlisted for the National Book Award in Nonfiction Named one of the Best Books of the Year by: Washington Post * Boston Globe * NPR* Bustle * BookRiot * New York Public Library From the award-winning, New York Times bestselling author of White Rage, the startling--and timely--history of voter suppression in America, with a foreword by Senator Dick Durbin. In her New York Times bestseller White Rage, Carol Anderson laid bare an insidious history of policies that have systematically impeded black progress in America, from 1865 to our combustible present. With One Person, No Vote, she chronicles a related history: the rollbacks to African American participation in the vote since the 2013 Supreme Court decision that eviscerated the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Known as the Shelby ruling, this decision effectively allowed districts with a demonstrated history of racial discrimination to change voting requirements without approval from the Department of Justice. Focusing on the aftermath of Shelby, Anderson follows the astonishing story of government-dictated racial discrimination unfolding before our very eyes as more and more states adopt voter suppression laws. In gripping, enlightening detail she explains how voter suppression works, from photo ID requirements to gerrymandering to poll closures. And with vivid characters, she explores the resistance: the organizing, activism, and court battles to restore the basic right to vote to all Americans.
