Download or read book The History of the Irish Newspaper 1685 1760 written by Robert Munter and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-02-11 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr Munter studies the growth and changing nature of the Irish periodical press from the time of the Protestant Ascendancy under William III to 1760, when provincial papers began to flourish outside Dublin. This was the period when newspapers were produced very largely in Dublin, mostly for local circulation among the English-speaking Protestant upper class. Dr Munter first sets the production of newspapers within the general history of Irish printing and bookselling, and the organisation of the trade. He then examines particular aspects of Irish newspaper history, presenting evidence about the importation of paper and the growth of local manufacture; the development of advertising and its importance as an element in the financial structure of the newspaper; evidence of the profitability of newspapers; circulation figures; the effect of the communications system on the supply and dissemination of news; the status of journalists and the development of the journalistic ethic; and analysis of the contents of the papers.

Download or read book A Dictionary of Members of the Dublin Book Trade 1550 1800 written by Mary Pollard and published by OUP/The Bibliographical Society of London. This book was released on 2000 with total page 730 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dictionary attempts in nearly 2,200 entries to cover all workers in the various branches of the Dublin book trade until the Act of Union in 1800. All grades of workers from apprentice to master, and papermakers, engravers, hawkers and other peripheral traders are considered, as well as the all-important printers and booksellers. Entries naturally vary from one or two lines to one or two pages in length. The aim is to illustrate the working life of each subject by reference to contemporary sources such as records of the stationer's Guild, state papers, imprints, newspaper advertisements, customers' accounts, etc, with documentation for each statement made. Entries will thus give practical clues to dating undated books, as well as provide a basis for further research into individual traders' work and the Dublin trade as a whole. Some account of the history and organization of the Dublin Guild of St Luke (cutlers, painter-stainers, and stationers) appears as introduction.

Download or read book Huguenot Networks 1560 1780 written by Vivienne Larminie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-02 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These chapters explore how a religious minority not only gained a toehold in countries of exile, but also wove itself into their political, social, and religious fabric. The way for the refugees’ departure from France was prepared through correspondence and the cultivation of commercial, military, scholarly and familial ties. On arrival at their destinations immigrants exploited contacts made by compatriots and co-religionists who had preceded them to find employment. London, a hub for the “Protestant international” from the reign of Elizabeth I, provided openings for tutors and journalists. Huguenot financial skills were at the heart of the early Bank of England; Huguenot reporting disseminated unprecedented information on the workings of the Westminster Parliament; Huguenot networks became entwined with English political factions. Webs of connection were transplanted and reconfigured in Ireland. With their education and international contacts, refugees were indispensable as diplomats to Protestant rulers in northern Europe. They operated monetary transfers across borders and as fund-raisers, helped alleviate the plight of persecuted co-religionists. Meanwhile, French ministers in London attempted to hold together an exceptionally large community of incomers against heresy and the temptations of assimilation. This is a story of refugee networks perpetuated, but also interpenetrated and remade.

Download or read book The Irish Dissenting Tradition 1650 1750 written by Kevin Herlihy and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This collection of essays presents new and important historical scholarship in a much neglected area of Irish social and ecclesiastical history." "At times Protestant dissent in Ireland has been mistakenly characterised as being synonymous with Ulster Presbyterians. Professional historians have seldom tackled the historical problems of Irish religious minorities and sects other than Presbyterians; the lesser known religious groups, especially those religious communities who never engaged in a comprehensive history of their own, have largely gone unnoticed. This volume attempts to fill this historiographical gap in Irish history, presenting new information that gives a better understanding of Irish Protestant Dissent." "The book is divided into two sections. The first section examines various definitions of Protestant dissent and their implications in dealings with both the government and the established church. The second section deals with more specific areas in the study of Irish Protestant dissent. In separate essays the Baptist, Quaker, French Huguenot and Palatine communities are placed in the context of the wider Protestant community and eighteenth-century society in general."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
