Book excerpt: The Brereton cyclothem of the Carbondale Formation of Illinois and the Marmaton Group, Des Moines Series (Pennsylvanian), of the Mid-Continent contains two major limestone units, the Brereton and the Higginsville. The Brereton limestone, which occurs in the upper half of the cyclothem, is present in Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, Oklahoma, Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky. The Higginsville limestone occurs in the lower half of the cyclothem, and is present in Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, and southwestern Illinois. These limestones represent major marine transgressions. Both of these limestones are very extensive and relatively thin. The Higginsville limestone is from 1 to 20 feet thick in Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma. The Brereton limestone is less than 5 feet thick over a large part of the region, but locally thickens to 15 to 20 feet. The Brereton limestone extends from western Kentucky to northeastern Oklahoma, a distance of at least 700 miles along the route of transgression. The purpose of this thesis is to study the Higginsville and Brereton limestones over the region. The objectives are 1) to study the vertical changes in the limestone at each location, 2) to study their lateral changes, 3) to determine if any of the fossil groups are restricted to certain areas, 4) to determine if there are any relations between the frequency of any of the fossil groups and the percentage of insoluble residue, 5) to study the regional variation of the percentage of insoluble residue.

A second purpose of this particular study is to establish the nature of the various limestones within these two cyclothems in the hope that texture will demonstrate the precise correlations of these widespread marker beds throughout the region. It is also the intent of this study to determine the environments of deposition present during the formation of the Limestones involved. The area of this investigation includes the western fringe of Indiana and Kentucky, most of Illinois except the western and northern areas, western and northern Missouri, southwestern Iowa, southeastern Nebraska, the eastern two thirds of Kansas, and northeastern Oklahoma.

Geochemical parameters consisting of nine elements ... were analyzed and the results used to illustrate the physico-chemical aspects of the inferred model of deposition.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to reconstruct the environments that existed during the deposition of the strata of the Sparland Cyclothem in the Illinois Basin and of equivalent beds in the northern Mid-Continent region, and to study some of the lithologies sampled from selected locations throughout the area of study. The sequence of beds known as the Sparland Cyclothem in Illinois occur in the upper Carbondale Formation of the Kewanee Group and the lower Modesto Formation of the McLeansboro Group, Pennsylvanian System. These beds have been correlated with the upper part of the Pawnee Formation, and the Bandera and Altamont Formations, Marmaton Group, Desmoinesian Series, of the northern Mid- Continent region.
