Book Gulf of Maine Strategic Regional Ocean Science Plan

Download or read book Gulf of Maine Strategic Regional Ocean Science Plan written by Judith Pederson and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction: The Gulf of Maine Regional Ocean Science Initiative evolved from an awareness of the importance of integrated approaches to addressing ecological, environmental, and social influences in coastal and marine ecosystems at the regional level. In response to a call for regional coordination of research by the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy, the National Sea Grant College Program funded ten projects to develop regional ocean research plans, one of which was awarded to the Gulf of Maine region. A Gulf of Maine Regional Ocean Science Council (ROSC) was appointed to oversee the development of a Strategic Regional Ocean Science Plan. The members include the Northeast Sea Grant College Program Directors and eight appointed members. The members, representing diverse areas of expertise from government, academia, and industry, include two Canadian representatives. Recognizing the importance of integrated approaches, this Gulf of Maine Strategic Regional Ocean Science Plan responds to the call for identifying priority themes that enhance ecosystem-based management and support coordination and collaboration of ongoing efforts.

Book Discoveries of the Census of Marine Life

Download or read book Discoveries of the Census of Marine Life written by Paul V. R. Snelgrove and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-10-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the 10-year course of the recently completed Census of Marine Life, a global network of researchers in more than 80 nations has collaborated to improve our understanding of marine biodiversity - past, present, and future. Providing insight into this remarkable project, this book explains the rationale behind the Census and highlights some of its most important and dramatic findings, illustrated with full-color photographs throughout. It explores how new technologies and partnerships have contributed to greater knowledge of marine life, from unknown species and habitats, to migration routes and distribution patterns, and to a better appreciation of how the oceans are changing. Looking to the future, it identifies what needs to be done to close the remaining gaps in our knowledge and provide information that will enable us to better manage resources, conserve diversity, reverse habitat losses, and respond to global climate change.

Book Bridging Boundaries Through Regional Marine Research

Download or read book Bridging Boundaries Through Regional Marine Research written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-03-06 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As appreciation of the interdisciplinary and multidimensional character of environmental issues has increased, there have been attempts to address regional needs more directly. One of these, the Regional Marine Research Program (RMRP), was established by Congress in 1990 to provide a mechanism to fund coastal marine research based on regionally-defined priorities. The RMRP legislation established a system of nine regional marine research boards around the United States. Each board was responsible for planning marine research to address issues of water quality and ecosystem health on a regional scale. Although all nine regions received funding for planning activities and development of a research plan, only the Gulf of Maine RMRP received funding for program implementation. The completion of the Gulf of Maine program, in 1997, presents an opportunity to evaluate whether the process for planning and managing the Gulf of Maine research was adequate, whether the research fulfilled the goals of the program, and whether this experience should serve as a model for similar regional programs elsewhere. Bridging Boundaries through Regional Marine Research is a study of the RMRP, with a specific review of the Gulf of Maine program as well as an assessment of other modesl for regional marine research. This report assesses the need for regional marine research, reviews processes by which regional marine research needs can be defined, and discusses existing programs for regional marine research in the United States. It also identifies short- and long-term approaches that might be taken by NOAA.

Book Routledge Handbook of National and Regional Ocean Policies

Download or read book Routledge Handbook of National and Regional Ocean Policies written by Biliana Cicin-Sain and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-15 with total page 828 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive handbook, prepared by leading ocean policy academics and practitioners from around the world, presents in-depth analyses of the experiences of fifteen developed and developing nations and four key regions of the world that have taken concrete steps toward cross-cutting and integrated national and regional ocean policy. All chapters follow a common framework for policy analysis. While most coastal nations of the world already have a variety of sectoral policies in place to manage different uses of the ocean (such as shipping, fishing, oil and gas development), in the last two decades, the coastal nations covered in the book have undertaken concerted efforts to articulate and implement an integrated, ecosystem-based vision for the governance of ocean areas under their jurisdiction. This includes goals and procedures to harmonize existing uses and laws, to foster sustainable development of ocean areas, to protect biodiversity and vulnerable resources and ecosystems, and to coordinate the actions of the many government agencies that are typically involved in oceans affairs. The book highlights the serious conflicts of use in most national ocean zones and the varying attempts by nations to follow the prescriptions emanating from the 1982 UN Law of the Sea Convention and the outcomes of the 1992, 2002, and 2012 sustainable development summits. The interrelationship among uses and processes in the coast and ocean requires that ocean governance be integrated, precautionary, and anticipatory. Overall, the book provides a definitive state-of-the-art review and analysis of national and regional ocean policies around the world.

Book Enabling Ocean Research in the 21st Century

Download or read book Enabling Ocean Research in the 21st Century written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-12-14 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the importance of the oceans to society grows, so does the need to understand their variation on many temporal and spatial scales. This need to understand ocean change is compelling scientists to move beyond traditional expeditionary modes of investigation. Observing systems will enable the study of processes in the ocean basins over varying timescales and spatial scales, providing the scientific basis for addressing important societal concerns such as climate change, natural hazards, and the health and viability of living and non-living resources along our coasts and in the open ocean. The book evaluates the scientific and technical readiness to move ahead with the establishment of a research-driven ocean observatory network, and highlights outstanding issues. These issues include the status of planning and development, factors that affect the timing of construction and installation, the cost and requirements for maintenance and operations, needs for sensor development and data management, the impact on availability of ships and deep submergence facilities, and the role of research-based observatories within national and international operational ocean observing systems being developed and implemented.
