Book From California s Gold Fields to the Mendocino Coast

Download or read book From California s Gold Fields to the Mendocino Coast written by Samuel M. Otterstrom and published by University of Nevada Press. This book was released on 2017-05-01 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: California’s history is rich and diverse, with numerous fascinating stories hidden in its past. Before the discovery of gold in the Sierras, San Francisco (Yerba Buena) and its surroundings comprised a sparsely populated frontier on the edge of the old Spanish realm. After 1848, the area rapidly transformed into a settled urban system as a tremendous influx of prospectors and settlers came to seek their fortune in California. A wave of gold miners, merchants, farmers, politicians, carpenters, and many others from various backgrounds and corners of the world migrated to the area at that time. Interrelated social, geographic, and economic processes led to a very quick metamorphosis from frontier settlement to a firmly established system with ingrained economic patterns. The development of San Francisco’s outlying region from a wilderness into a prosperous village and farming mecca shows how quickly in-migration coupled with economic diversification can establish a stable settlement structure upon the landscape. Otterstrom describes an intricately woven tapestry of interrelated people who were contributing creators of a wide variety of prosperous northern California environs. He uncovers the processes that converted this sleepy post-Mexican outpost into a focal point of nearly hyperactive youthful growth. The narrative follows this crucial story of settlement development until the dawn of the twentieth century, through the interconnected framework of individual and family ingenuity, migration trajectories, and diverse geographical scales. Multiplying individualistic experiences from across far-flung appendages of the Northern California system into larger and larger scales, Otterstrom has achieved a matchless historical and sociological study that will form the basis for any future studies of the area.

Book Lusaka City Region Food System Assessment Synthesis Report

Download or read book Lusaka City Region Food System Assessment Synthesis Report written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2019-09-20 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lusaka CRFS assessment helped to identify gaps to be bridged and bottlenecks to be opened to create more resilient and inclusive food systems within the Lusaka City Region, and in long term to make the CRFS more sustainable and resilient, and improve the livelihoods of rural and urban dwellers in the city region. It gives special attention to the challenges of how to improve production capacities, access to inputs, sustainability of production practices and market access for the smallholder farmers in urban, peri-urban and rural areas in the city region, with a specific focus on fruit and vegetable value chains. The assessment examined current and future constraints affecting the local and regional food value chain. It used local knowledge to help analyse and prioritize these constraints and explore new ideas to strengthen the sustainability and performance of the food system.

Book Sustainable agricultural mechanization in China

This book was released on 2023-01-20 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainable agricultural mechanization covers all levels of farming and processing technologies, and takes into consideration technological, economic, social, environmental and cultural aspects when contributing to the sustainable development of agrifood systems. This publication strives to comprehensively and systematically summarize the status and strategies of China's agricultural mechanization development, its impacts, experiences and practices, and business models. Furthermore, the publication investigates the related investment and policy recommendations to reach the goal of agricultural and rural modernization by 2035, to drive smallholder farmers to enter modern agriculture, and to achieve sustainable development. It is estimated that by 2035, agricultural production in China will predominantly be mechanized. The concept of integrating mechanization and digitalization will be applied to agricultural mechanization management and operation monitoring and services, and mechanization will comprehensively support all agricultural and rural modernization. The development of sustainable agricultural mechanization in China provides cases and examples of innovations with global value, not only for developing countries but in particular for middle-income countries and emerging countries.
