It challenges the traditional wisdom that competition is harmful for regional development or can be zero-sum. Do tax and infrastructure incentives have any effect on the unemployment rate of areas adopting them?

Book The Welfare State Public Investment and Growth

Download or read book The Welfare State Public Investment and Growth written by International Institute of Public Finance. Congress and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1998 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current state of research in the international public finance field is elucidated in the fifteen papers collected in this volume, selected from among the more than 200 that were presented at the 53rd Congress of the International Institute of Public Finance held in Kyoto, Japan, in August 1997. The collection assembled here is not intended to comprise a proceedings of the Congress but, rather, presents the ideas of eminent scholars in seven areas of current research in the international public finance field: The Welfare State, Public Investment and Economic Growth, Inter-Governmental Relations, Tax Competition and Foreign Direct Investment, Foreign Investment in Transitional Economies-Russia and China, and Equalization Transfer Systems in Japan and Australia. The highlight of the Congress was the brilliant debate between two of the greatest authorities in the area of public finance, James M. Buchanan and Richard A. Musgrave, whose papers form the opening section of the volume.

Book Public Investment and Regional Economic Development

Download or read book Public Investment and Regional Economic Development written by Daniyel Felzenshṭain and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Felsenstein (geography, Hebrew U. of Jerusalem, Israel), McQuaid (economics, Napier U., Scotland), McCann (economics, U. of Reading, England), and Shefer (urban and regional economics, Israel Institute of Technology, Israel) present 15 papers that attempt to elucidate endogenous strategies of public investment for regional development. Arguing that traditional neoclassical exogenous strategies (in which investment comes from outside the region) has proven to be of dubious value for development, the editors contend the investment in human capital and knowledge infrastructure from within regions can have self-reinforcing effects that will lead to better growth in development. These "soft" investments also need to be linked with "hard" investments in physical infrastructure such as roads, buildings, and the like. Articles look at the lessons of policy experience arising from past experience with regional economic change, examine issues of innovation and knowledge creation, discuss the complex relation between human capital investment and regional labor markets, and relate the role of investment in physical infrastructure to the preceding discussions. Book Financing Development

Download or read book Financing Development written by Nancy Birdsall and published by Peterson Institute for International Economics. This book was released on 2004 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book advocates adding more open and radical regionalism to strategies for the financing of economic and social development in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Editors Nancy Birdsall and Liliana Rojas-Suarez argue that agreements among countries within regions, rather than detracting from an open multilateral system, can promote greater integration into the global trading and financial system by helping to build the domestic institutions that developing countries need to cope with the challenges of the global economy. The essays in this volume point to the unrealized potential of regionalism in promoting not only reduction of trade barriers, but shared investment in infrastructure and enhanced policy cooperation in development of financial markets. The book also offers fresh insights on how regional development banks can catalyze collective action.
