Download or read book Refugees and Asylum Seekers written by S. Megan Berthold and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2019-06-24 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume engages human rights, domestic immigration law, refugee policy in the United States, Canada, and Europe, and scholarship to examine forced migration, refugee resettlement, asylum seeker experiences, policies and programs for refugee well-being in North America and Europe. Given the recent "re-politicization" of forced migration and refugees in Europe and the U.S., this edited collection presents an in-depth, multi-dimensional analysis of the history of policies and laws related to the status of refugees and asylum seekers in the U.S., Canada, and Europe and the challenges and prospects of refugee and asylum seeker assistance and integration in the 21st century. The book provides rich insights on institutional perspectives critical to understanding the politics and practices of refugee resettlement and the asylum process in the U.S., Canada, and Europe, including international human rights and humanitarian law as well as domestic laws and policies related to forced migrants. Issues addressed include social welfare supports for resettled refugees; culturally responsive health and mental health approaches to working with refugees and asylum seekers; systemic failures in the asylum processing systems; and rights-based approaches to working with forced migrant children. The book also examines policy developments and strategies to advance the well-being and social inclusion of refugees in the U.S. and Europe.

Download or read book Rescue written by David Miliband and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-11-14 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are in the midst of a global refugee crisis. Sixty five million people are fleeing for their lives. The choices are urgent, not just for them but for all of us. What can we possibly do to help? With compassion and clarity, David Miliband shows why we should care and how we can make a difference. He takes us from war zones in the Middle East to peaceful suburbs in America to explain the crisis and show what can be done, not just by governments with the power to change policy but by citizens with the urge to change lives. His innovative and practical call to action shows that the crisis need not overwhelm us. Miliband says this is a fight to uphold the best of human nature in the face of rhetoric and policy that humor the worst. He defends the international order built by western leaders out of the ashes of World War II, but says now is the time for reform. Describing his family story and drawing revealing lessons from his life in politics, David Miliband shows that if we fail refugees, then we betray our own history, values, and interests. The message is simple: rescue refugees and we rescue ourselves.

Book excerpt: This study consists of an evaluation of the effectiveness of the United States Refugee Act of 1980 in achieving its objectives and submits recommendations in the light of the analysis undertaken. The objectives of the Act reflect the need for a balance between the desire to furnish a generous humanitarian response to the refugee problem by removing geographical and ideological considerations and establishing permanent mechanisms to respond to refugee emergencies, and the need for exercising greater control over this response by adequately taking into account the domestic impacts of refugee admissions. The study identifies several areas of concern. The first is the inadequacy of existing mechanisms, due to the elimination by the Refugee Act of the Attorney General's parole authority. To overcome this shortcoming, it recommends the establishment of a special humanitarian admission status. The second concerns the budget for refugees, based upon projections. The inconsistencies between these and the actual arrivals could be resolved by regular consultations between the appropriate authorities and the setting up of a contingency fund. The third relates to the US standards for refugee admissions, which are generally based upon nationality, foreign policy considerations and the promotion of family reunification. The study recommends the need for protection be regarded as a capital element in granting refugee admissions. The fourth concerns the processing of applications and includes the question of bureaucratic inflexibility. This could be improved by training, better information about country conditions and greater use of data and information systems. Finally, the existing mechanisms for policy development are inadequate. The study admits that this is a particularly difficult question to resolve, but contends that greater inter-agency coordination and education of the public opinion might help.
