Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reformation of the Nineteenth Century: A Series of Historical Sketches Dealing With the Rise and Progress of the Religious Movement Inaugurated by Thomas and Alexander Campbell From Its Origin to the Close of the Nineteenth Century The religious reformation inaugurated by Thomas and Alexander Campbell in western Pennsylvania in 1809, and which subsequently received as a tributary part of the movement begun by Barton W. Stone of Kentucky about the year 1801, has now attained dimensions and standing which make it certain that it is to rank high among the religious forces of this country. Conscious of a high mission, inspired by dauntless hope, and increasing in numbers at a ratio far in excess of older religious bodies, it is destined, during the century upon which we have entered, to become one of the chief factors in molding the religious thought and life of the people of this and other countries. In proportion as any religious movement becomes a potent force in affecting the welfare of mankind, its early history becomes interesting and important. This is especially true of the very beginnings of its history where those influences which have molded its character are most clearly seen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alexander Campbell: Leader of the Great Reformation of the Nineteenth Century Such a heritage the young people of our Endeavor Socie ties have in the leaders of the religious movement which, in the early part of this century, led to the establishment of the Christian Church. Though the history of that move ment does not yet Span a century, no religious body has a richer calendar of saints than we. Many of them may have been lacking in the conventional graces of society, and in high scholastic attainments; but in the genuineness of their sympathies and in their familiarity with God's two great books - nature and the Bible - all were, in the highest and truest sense, gentlemen and scholars. First among these worthies must ever be placed that grand man, to whose faith, originality and genius our relig ious movement owes its origin, Alexander Campbell, the Sage of Bethany. To bring the story of his life within a compass that would enable busy people to become acquaint ed with him, has been the end sought in this volume. With a literature so rich in material, this has been no small task. The sixty volumes which grew up under the genius of Mr. Campbell, including the Christian Baptist and Millen nial Harbinger, are rich in biographical suggestion. In addition to these the author is indebted to Dr. Richardson's valuable Memoirs. All he claims is to have gathered, from these sources, the most important events in this great life, and to have compressed them within a space that may encourage every lover of truth to sit, for a season, at the feet of one of its most earnest defenders. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nineteenth century witnessed rapid economic and social developments, profound political and intellectual upheaval, and startling innovations in art and literature. As Europeans peered into an uncertain future, they drew upon the Renaissance for meaning, precedents, and identity. Many claimed to find inspiration or models in the Renaissance, but as we move across the continent's borders and through the century's decades, we find that the Renaissance was many different things to many different people. This collection brings together the work of sixteen authors who examine the many Renaissances conceived by European novelists and poets, artists and composers, architects and city planners, political theorists and politicians, businessmen and advertisers. The essays fall into three groups: "Aesthetic Recoveries of Strategic Pasts"; "The Renaissance in Nineteenth-Century Culture Wars"; and "Material Culture and Manufactured Memories."

Book excerpt: Most students of the Restoration know quite a bit about Alexander Campbell. Barton W. Stone is usually known for preaching in an 1801 revival at Cane Ridge (most don't know about the Pentecostal-ish goings on there), and later for joining forces with Alexander Campbell. These are probably the only two things most people know about him (if they even know those). This book seeks to correct that-and not necessarily just put-ting Barton W. Stone back into his place in Restoration Movement history, but also his whole movement, which included more men than just him. The "New Light" Christians never referred to themselves by that name, but the author of this book uses it as a convenient way to distinguish them from other localized groups who also called themselves "Christians" or the "Christian Church" (specifically, James O'Kelly's "Christian Church" in the south, and Abner Jones and Elias Smith's "Christian Church" or "Christian Connexion" in New England). So don't let his use of the name cloud your view of the information. The author was connected with the Disciples of Christ, the most liberal branch of the Restoration Movement, but this fact does not come across in the following pages. All footnotes are original to this work, except for ones marked "Editor," which have been added for this updated edition. We hope you find this work interesting and beneficial to your understanding of Restoration Movement history.
