Book Reformation Scholasticism

Download or read book Reformation Scholasticism written by Herman Dooyeweerd and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dooyeweerd's Reformation and Scholasticism volume two, provides what is perhaps the clearest entrée into his entire biblically driven philosophical systematics. The first two chapters discuss in detail the biblical, historical, and systematic issues that actually gave rise to the development of this intrinsically reformational philosophy. The third chapter presents what is arguably the clearest presentation of Dooyeweerd's transcendental critique of philosophical thought. Subsequent chapters go on in considerable detail to apply this latter critique to both the old Greek, and subsequent Thomist ideas of "substance" that have informed so much of the Western tradition of thought. The final chapters provide an extensive presentation of what Dooyeweerd means by the Modal and Individuality Structures of temporal reality. This work is a must read for those who want to understand the real Dooyeweerd.

Book excerpt: The present volume of Reformation & Scholasticism completes the second trilogy of Dooyeweerd's writings with a specific focus upon his philosophy of nature. Unique to this work is the development of his new theory which he called enkaptic interlacements. This theory was an attempt to show how various types of entities exhibit inter-relational connections when combined into new forms that express an enkaptic unity without eclipsing the internal sovereignty of the several entities. The relationship between atom and molecule and that between the non-living components of the cell body and their enkaptic binding in the living organism serve as an introduction to Dooyeweerd's anthropology, in which he distinguishes between four enkaptically bounded sub-structures, namely the physico-chemical substructure, the biotic sub-structure, the sensory sub-structure and the qualifying, though in itself unqualified, act-structure. The problem of creation and the genesis of humankind surfaced briefly before the final, - alas unfinished - chapter analyzes the place of humankind in the cosmos, characterized as a central anthropological problem. Although Dooyeweerd's involvement in finalizing his Encyclopedia of the Science of Law prevented him from completing his work, it remains a valuable contribution to a much needed reformation of anthropology.

Download or read book All That Is in God written by James E. Dolezal and published by Reformation Heritage Books. This book was released on 2017-07-13 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unknown to many, increasing numbers of conservative evangelicals are denying basic tenets of classical Christian teaching about God, with departures occurring even among those of the Calvinistic persuasion. James E. Dolezal’s All That Is in God provides an exposition of the historic Christian position while engaging with these contemporary deviations. His convincing critique of the newer position he styles “theistic mutualism” is philosophically robust, systematically nuanced, and biblically based. It demonstrates the need to maintain the traditional viewpoint, particularly on divine simplicity, and spotlights the unfortunate implications for other important Christian doctrines—such as divine eternality and the Trinity—if it were to be abandoned. Arguing carefully and cogently that “all that is in God is God Himself,” the work is sure to stimulate debate on the issue in years to come.

Download or read book Prolegomena written by Cooper Jordan and published by . This book was released on 2020-07-13 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the Luther Renaissance in the early twentieth-century, many scholars of the Reformation period have argued for a strong discontinuity between the early Protestant reformers and the following age of Protestant Scholasticism. Such a claim is exemplified by Radical Lutheranism, which purports that Luther's theology is incommensurate with that of the scholastic movements of the seventeenth century. In this work, Jordan Cooper defends the scholastic approach as a genuine outgrowth of Reformation theology and offers a critique of the theological system of Radical Lutheranism. He does this through a thorough exposition of the method used by Martin Chemnitz, Johann Gerhard, and other post-Reformation thinkers. He demonstrates that the foundational metaphysical assumptions of the Lutheran scholastics are both consistent with the Reformation and necessary for the church today. This book is the beginning of a series titled A Contemporary Protestant Scholastic Theology.

Excerpt: ... of an instrument, conceived to be so efficacious and infallible. 55. The Reason the only Principle addressed. The marks, indeed of the origin of the Scholastic Philosophy, accompany it throughout in its developement. As it arose in the struggles of Reason against an imperious authority, so Reason is throughout the principle with which it is concerned, and which alone it endeavours to satisfy. It had not for its object, to win men to the Truth: it sought only to justify and secure an obedience to which the unwilling intellect was constrained. 56. Influence of the Schoolmen on the Reformation of Religion and Philosophy. Its whole tendency, accordingly, was to magnify Reason against the principle of mere authority. And on this account (though the assertion may seem strange) the Schoolmen must undoubtedly be reckoned among the precursors of the reformation both of Religion and Philosophy. By the temerity of their speculations, they inured the minds of men to think boldly: and they raised doubts and difficulties which sustained the inquisitive spirit, until at least a better day should dawn upon its efforts. Unconscious they were themselves of the benefit, which was slowly and painfully resulting from their own abortive endeavours. But what they were in themselves was merely accidental, and passed away with them. The spirit which they had nurtured, survived beyond them, to fight against the system within which it had grown up; as the system itself had fought against the arbitrary authority of the Church, within whose bosom it had been cherished. Thus we find some of the early Schoolmen strenuous opponents of the usurpations of Rome: as Robert Grossetete, Bishop of Lincoln, in the XIIIth Century, and Ockam in the XIVth. A reaction, indeed, ...
