Book Reflections on the Future and on the Role of the Ferro Alloy Industry in South Africa as Part of the Social System

Download or read book Reflections on the Future and on the Role of the Ferro Alloy Industry in South Africa as Part of the Social System written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent political developments in South Africa have created a favourable climate for major industries, including ferro-alloys, to play an increasing role in the various social upliftment programmes such as education, training, occupational health and safety. For this goal to be achieved, the economic viability of the industry must not only be sustained, but also improved. The generation of additional wealth by manufacturing value-added products from ferro-alloys has great potential to assist in addressing South Africa's growing financial needs. The future of the social programmes will no doubt depend on the adoption of appropriate policies and the success of these initiatives, as well as the continuing growth of the ferro-alloy industry itself. Technical and environmental considerations are becoming increasingly important factors.

Book The Use of Computers in the South African Ferro alloy Industry

Download or read book The Use of Computers in the South African Ferro alloy Industry written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growth of the ferro-alloy industry in South Africa has been accompanied by developments in electric-furnace technology and an increase in furnace capacity. It soon became clear that stricter control of furnace operation was necessary, especially in the larger furnaces, if optimum production was to be achieved. In 1974 a research team set up by the Council for Mineral Technology (formerly the National Institute for Metallurgy) and a large ferro-alloy producer started investigating the control of a large submerged-arc electric furnace, their objectives being to install a computer system, to increase their understanding of the process, to devise strategies to improve the furnace operation, and, in the long term, to optimize the process. An account is given of the first system installed - a minicomputer system that was responsible for the acquisition and storage of data on the status of the furnace at all times, and for the development of off-line programmes for metallurgical control of the process. As the project developed, it became clear that control of the raw-material feed and electrode-hoist position were unsatisfactory. The analogue system for the batching of raw materials was changed to a system that controls the automatic feeding of raw materials according to a preset recipe, controls the dry mass of the reducing agent, and compensates for any errors that occurred during the previous batching. Electrode control was achieved through a system that depends on phase resistances, which are calculated from reliable measurements made in the furnace. Both these controllers were designed and developed as stand-alone microcomputer units. Although there is still much room for improvement in the production of ferro-alloys in South Africa, a lack of skilled manpower will probably delay the implementation of computer control on the whole plant operation as has been achieved overseas.

Book The Future of Mining in South Africa Sunset or Sunrise

Download or read book The Future of Mining in South Africa Sunset or Sunrise written by Salimah Valiani and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2018-12-28 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The future of mining in South Africa is hotly contested. Wide-ranging views from multiple quarters rarely seem to intersect, placing emphasis on different questions without engaging in holistic debate. This book aims to catalyse change by gathering together fragmented views into unifying conversations. It highlights the importance of debating the future of mining in South Africa and for reaching consensus in other countries across the mineral-dependent globe. It covers issues such as the potential of platinum to spur industrialisation, land and dispossession on the platinum belt, the roles of the state and capital in mineral development, mining in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the experiences of women in and affected by mining since the late 19th century and mine worker organising: history and lessons and how post-mine rehabilitation can be tackled. It was inspired not only by an appreciation of South Africas extensive mineral endowments, but also by a realisation that, while the South African mining industry performs relatively well on many technical indicators, its management of broader social issues leaves much to be desired. It needs to be deliberated whether the mining industry can play as critical a role going forward as it did in the evolution of the countrys economy.

Book The Role of Technology in the Development of South Africa s Mineral Industries

Download or read book The Role of Technology in the Development of South Africa s Mineral Industries written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author, in stressing the importance of innovative technology in the development of the mining and metallurgical industries, shows how this was true in the past and the present in South Africa, taking his examples from the gold, uranium, platinum, ferro-alloy, and industrial-minerals industries. He emphasizes the need for industrial expansion in South Africa, and outlines how this can be achieved by the further development of the stainless-steel, manganese, titanium, and precious-metal industries. He then discusses the ways through which such development can be brought about: increased recoveries, new technologies, process control and optimization, reduced energy consumption, recovery of by-products, and recycling of scrap materials.

Book Energy Use and Efficiency in Ferroalloy Production

Download or read book Energy Use and Efficiency in Ferroalloy Production written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of basic metals and ferroalloys in the South African economy and in the country's energy use is reviewed and data are given on the energy consumed in the production of these materials. The paper deals especially with ferrochrome as the ferroalloy of most importance in South Africa. The effect on energy consumption of various processes used to produce this alloy are described, as well as that of other variables such as the design of the furnace and the generation and use of furnace off-gases. A solution to the problems of furnace operation and control is explained, together with its effect on energy consumption. A thermodynamic efficiency for the production of ferrochrome is given and the energy efficiency of ferroalloy production is shown to be to some extent a trade-off between the costs of energy and the costs of other production factors.

Book Presidential Address

Download or read book Presidential Address written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pointing out that South Africa needs to utilize its wealth- creating activities, together with local and international investment, to further develop its industries, the address asserts that the mining and minerals industries, especially in the manufacture of beneficiated minerals industries, especially in the manufacture of beneficiated products, offer the greatest potential for South Africa to achieve its goal. As many mineral-beneficiation processes are based on pyrometallurgical routes, the address goes on to describe some historical pyrometallurgical operations and to indicate probable developments in the future. These include growth in the fields of both precious and base metals. After discussing environmental and recycling matters, together with manpower requirements, the address concludes that the major growth in the mining and minerals industries will occur in the manufacture of steel, stainless steel, ferro-alloys (particularly ferrochromium), aluminium, and titania slag.

Book Highlights of Current Metallurgical Research and Development in the South African Precious metals and Ferro alloy Industries

Download or read book Highlights of Current Metallurgical Research and Development in the South African Precious metals and Ferro alloy Industries written by and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some of the current research-and-development programmes in South Africa are reviewed, including those involving the extraction metallurgy of gold, uranium, ferrochromium, ferromanganese, and the platinum-group metals, and the transfer of technology to the industry. The motivation for such research and development is the reduction of capital and operating costs, the improvement of existing processes by computer-assisted control and optimization, the development of new processes for ores not previously exploited, the optimization of energy consumption, and the further processing of minerals to intermediate and end products. In a country with a limited amount of highly-trained manpower, the optimization of metallurgical research and development has to be based on good technical interaction between the mining and metallurgical industries and their in-house laboratories on the one hand, and the national laboratories on the other. In addition, the successful transfer of technology from the research-and-development phase to industry is essential. The examples quoted demonstrate that the local metallurgical industry is supported by a vigorous research-and-development effort that should generate confidence in South Africa's continued large-scale supply of raw and processed mineral products at competitive prices.

Book The Political Economy Of South Africa

Download or read book The Political Economy Of South Africa written by Ben Fine and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-12 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Democratization in South Africa has been accompanied by continuing and even deepening economic inequalities. Rather than proposing a blueprint for a more equable economic system, this book presents the results and implications of wide-ranging research on the history and current dynamics of the South African economy over the past fifty years. The authors analyze a range of strategic economic trajectories, linking these to the shifting balance of economic and political power, and they set the parameters within which the economic and political debates are conducted. }The acclaim with which democratization in South Africa has been greeted has been tempered by the recognition that there are at the same time continuing and even deepening economic inequalities. This is more disturbing given the extreme economic disparity experienced by much of the black population, the retreat from commitments to public ownership enshrined in the Freedom Charter, the unambiguous safeguarding of private capital, and the obstacles placed in the way of progressive economic policies by business interests and the entrenched apartheid-era bureaucracy. Rather than proposing a blueprint for a more equable economic system, this book presents the results and implications of detailed and wide-ranging research on both the history and current dynamics of the South African economy, from the Second World War to the present. The authors analyze a range of strategic economic trajectories, linking these to the shifting balance of economic and political power in South Africa. But their approach is not prescriptive; instead they set the parameters within which the economic and political debates are conducted. They also discuss the theoretical arguments involved in the propositions that they and others have put forward. The books value is enhanced by the comprehensiveness of the data presented, and each chapter is self-contained so that particular topics can be studied separately.
