Rider died in 1961, he left to his descendants a typescript text, tentatively entitled Flashbacks, which would eventually become Reflections on the Battlefield. Broadly autobiographical, this text offers a unique account of its author who fought as an infantryman while also serving as a chaplain, thus exposing himself in peculiar directness to the ambiguities of chaplaincy service on the battlefield. A further particularity is that Rider was in a minority among chaplains, being a Methodist chaplain. In August 1914, Rider, aged twenty-five, was about to begin his third year of training for the ministry of the Wesleyan Methodist church, at Handsworth Theological College in Birmingham. Two months later he had enlisted with the First Birmingham Battalion, later termed the 14th Battalion, of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment. Rider's first-hand accounts of Ypres, the Somme and Arras reveal a man morally opposed to war and yet adamant that Germany and her allies needed to be defeated. Reflections on the Battlefield provides us with a personal and valuable contribution to the present-day debate about the contemporary understanding of the ethics of war, as expressed on the World War I battlefield.

Book excerpt: On 5 and 6 May 1864, the Union and Confederate armies met near an unfinished railroad in central Virginia, with Lee outmanned and outgunned, hoping to force Grant to fight in the woods. The name of the battle--Wilderness--suggests the horror of combat at close quarters and an inability to see the whole field of engagement, even from a distance. Indeed, the battle is remembered for its brutality and ultimate futility for Lee: even with 26,000 casualties on both sides, the Wilderness only briefly stemmed Grant's advance. Stephen Cushman lives fifty miles south of this battlefield. Popma, a teacher of classical languages and a special professor of Reformed philosophy at the universities of Groningen and Utrecht, wrote his book during the trying times of the Second World War. The work outlines a philosophy of history rooted in Scripture and takes the account provided by Scripture seriously, without eliminating its historical character, either by spiritualizing its message or by undercutting it through an appeal to science. It takes its cues from the Scriptural narrative: creation and fall, the tower of Babel, Abraham and Israel, Daniel’s Four Empires, and the principal division in world history, the coming of Christ. Popma’s fresh and challenging approach to history utilizes the perspective of the Calvinistic philosophy associated with Herman Dooyeweerd, but it does so in Popma’s unique and idiosyncratic way, and in a style that belies the learning that underlies it. Nor does one need to have any special acquaintance with the specifics of Dooyeweerd’s philosophy to profit from it. At the same time, the relation between history and theology is especially important – “the researcher who never took a peek in the workshop of theology will always be a bungler” (p. 85). "History is a unity, and a continuity—of the sacred and the secular, of the course of salvation history and secular history, of the here and the hereafter. Nor does it end at the resurrection from the dead. “Our earthly task continues, first in our task in heaven, presently in our task on the new earth. Thus, it is not true that our earthly task comes to an end. For heaven and earth belong together and our task never ends” (p. 116). So then, history is not something disconnected from eternity, but continues into eternity. There is a unity between heaven and earth, between culture here and now, and life in the renewed creation hereafter. The aim of this book is to point to the splendour of the structure that God has built, to history in its unity and course. He who learns to see something of that splendour will foster a burning interest for what has happened and is still happening and will happen. He will be afraid of nothing so much as the danger of shutting oneself up in a spiritual prison that makes it impossible to see the real history, even if such a prison displays the finest inscriptions over its entrance and is comfortably and even luxuriously furnished. Nor will he become discouraged when he discovers that history is full of injustice. For he knows that those who hunger and thirst after righteousness will be satisfied" (p. 133).

Above all else, these essays are a salute to the infantry: Army and Marine, who among our military, have borne the greatest burden in all our wars and conflicts since the birth of this nation. I have written these essays with the hope that the lay reader can learn to appreciate the experience of the uniformed participant in our national conflicts and understand the sacrifices and issues that a very small portion of our population experiences on behalf of us all. Normandy has been a particular obsession of mine since I was 10 years old. I commanded the 40th anniversary return to Normandy by the 82d Airborne in 1984 and have been returning there every year to provide staff rides to the U.S. and Allied soldiers and airmen that arrive each year. I have had the privilege of walking the ground with many of the original veterans and gaining insights that no history book contains. I firmly believe that the invasion was the greatest single effort our civilization has ever undertaken and probably ever will. It represents a microcosm of what we are as a people and what our uniformed personnel are all about. It and they are unique. Normandy is unique, hallowed, and largely untouched ground and above all else, it is the story of ordinary people doing extraordinary things, which is the foundation of our nation. Vietnam was the war for my generation. Among many things, I learned to appreciate the qualities of other nationalities as well as the frailties and shortcomings of my own. Above all else, Vietnam gave me a very personal lifelong appreciation for the common soldier doing his work in an uncommon manner; he above all else deserves our respect and appreciation. Grenada was a true watershed in our history. It put the ills of Vietnam behind us, gave us a renewed sense of national pride and was the epitome of what America is all about - returning democracy to those that had lost it and acting as a symbol of selfless sacrifice for something greater than each of us. Grenada, with its failures, provided the impetus for badly needed reforms to the special operations community and spawned all the tools and capabilities that today we take for granted. The Desert Wars have been a huge national stress test for our military. Years of difficult grunt labor for ambiguous purposes and possibly lost causes have not diminished in the slightest the strength and will of our uniformed Americans, despite the fact that they deserve far more than what their nation has granted them in return for their service. Reflections is a collection of comments and observations that have no specific geographical or campaign purpose but make specific points regarding issues and people. The Special Operations experience was perhaps the most meaningful for me on a personal basis. I was there in the beginning with the Iran hostage rescue attempt and saw on a very personal basis how the services resisted and fought creation and enhancement of the capabilities we now enjoy and take for granted. I had a small part in the creation of what we see today as born through the Nunn-Cohen Amendment, MFP 11 (SOF Funding), and Goldwater-Nichols. Despite the institutional pain I suffered as a result of the association, I wear the scars with great pride and know that the capabilities and values will remain long after my passing.
