A kind of National Velvet for adults." —San Francisco Chronicle “Every horse story is a love story,” writes Jane Smiley, who has loved horses for most of her life and owned and bred them for a good part of it. To love something is to observe it with more than usual attention, and that is precisely what Smiley does in this In particular she follows a sexy filly named Waterwheel and a grey named Wowie (he “tells” a horse communicator that he wants it changed from Hornblower) as they begin careers at the racetrack. The journey took him three years and three months as he rode through Latin America, Europe and Africa, finally reaching New Delhi in 2013. Jay and his motorcycle, sanDRina, encountered mechanical meltdowns, remote Mayan villages, weeks of high altitude desert isolation, Caribbean and Atlantic voyages, humility, friendship, and landscapes that almost destroyed the bike and Jay's spirit. His go-with-the-flow attitude and engineering background deliver a story of global trails and an adventuring insight that brought him fame amongst the off-road motorcycling fraternity before his journey was even complete.

Book Ride the Tiger

Download or read book Ride the Tiger written by Julius Evola and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2018-07-13 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Julius Evola’s final major work, which examines the prototype of the human being who can give absolute meaning to his or her life in a world of dissolution • Presents a powerful criticism of the idols, structures, theories, and illusions of our modern age • Reveals how to transform destructive processes into inner liberation The organizations and institutions that, in a traditional civilization and society, would have allowed an individual to realize himself completely, to defend the principal values he recognizes as his own, and to structure his life in a clear and unambiguous way, no longer exist in the contemporary world. Everything that has come to predominate in the modern world is the direct antithesis of the world of Tradition, in which a society is ruled by principles that transcend the merely human and transitory. Ride the Tiger presents an implacable criticism of the idols, structures, theories, and illusions of our dissolute age examined in the light of the inner teachings of indestructible Tradition. Evola identifies the type of human capable of “riding the tiger,” who may transform destructive processes into inner liberation. He offers hope for those who wish to reembrace Traditionalism.

Book Tug of War Classical Versus Modern Dressage

Download or read book Tug of War Classical Versus Modern Dressage written by Gerd Heuschmann and published by Trafalgar Square Books. This book was released on 2024-01-23 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: German rider and equine veterinarian Dr. Gerd Heuschmann is well-known in dressage circles—admired for his plain speaking regarding what he deems the incorrect and damaging training methods commonly employed by riders and trainers involved in competition today. Here, he presents an intelligent and thought-provoking exploration of both classical and "modern" training methods, including "hyperflexion" (also known as Rollkur), against a practical backdrop of the horse's basic anatomy and physiology. In a detailed yet comprehensible fashion, Dr. Heuschmann describes parts of the horse's body that need to be correctly developed by the dressage rider. He then examines how they function both individually and within an anatomical system, and how various schooling techniques affect these parts for the good, or for the bad. Using vivid color illustrations of the horse's skeletal system, ligaments, and musculature, in addition to comparative photos depicting "correct" versus "incorrect" movement—and most importantly, photos of damaging schooling methods—Dr. Heuschmann convincingly argues that the horse's body tells us whether our riding is truly gymnasticizing and "building the horse up," or simply wearing it down and tearing it apart. He then outlines his ideal "physiological education" of the horse. Training should mirror the mental and physical development of the horse, fulfilling "classical" requirements—such as regularity of the three basic gaits, suppleness, and acceptance of the bit—rather than disregarding time-tested values for quick fixes that could lead to the degradation of the horse's well-being. Dr. Heuschmann's assertion that the true objectives of dressage schooling must never be eclipsed by simple "mechanical perfection" is certain to inspire riders at all levels to examine their riding, their riding goals, and the techniques they employ while pursuing them.

Book Riding Reflections

  • Author : Piero Santini
  • Publisher : Read Books Ltd
  • Release : 2013-04-16
  • ISBN : 1473388848
  • Pages : 116 pages

Download or read book Riding Reflections written by Piero Santini and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2013-04-16 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In writing a foreword to Major Santinis book I do so because I have for some years been a convert to his method of forward riding. When I approach a new method of horsemanship I require certain evidence that it has shown successful results. A few days instruction under Major Santini convinced me that his method was the right one. My only regret is that I did not use his style of seat while an active polo player as I believe I would have then retired with a 10 goal handicap instead of a 9 goal. After the International Polo matches before the war there were always a lot of reasons put forward to excuse the defeats of the English team. I attribute them to two reasons one is that the English players rode, and still ride, longer than the Americans the other that, largely for this reason, they lack a compact seat and a solid stance. The best American players either consciously or unconsciously conform to Diagram A of Riding Rejections. In show jumping it has by this time been amply proved that those who have adopted the principles originally established by the Italian school have achieved the greatest success. I have also watched the efforts of children over a period of years by this time the same tenets are in general use, for they have proved invaluable not only in the show ring but also to all other forms of cross-country riding, including hunting, for people of both sexes and of all ages. With regard to steeple chasing one has only to look at the photographs to see which style is best suited to the horse.
