Book excerpt: Since its establishment as a policy research institute in 1990, the Institute for In- grated Development Studies (IIDS) has been engaged in promoting public awa- ness and understanding of issues of national importance by undertaking studies and research on contemporary themes. It has been disseminating findings of its studies to policymakers in the public and private sectors and ultimately to the public at large. Water resources is one of the areas of strong public interest in Nepal. It is cons- ered a potent engine of economic growth. Its optimal use is dependent on, among other things, the cooperation among the riparian countries, especially India and Bangladesh. Water resources development is one of the subjects in which the Ins- tute has been engaged since its beginning by undertaking studies through national professionals and joint studies on the water resources of the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna river basins with policy research institutes from India and Bangladesh. In order to help policymakers to develop long-term perspectives of the need for cooperation for optimal use of water available in the tributaries of the Ganges, the Institute was involved in a major track-two exercise for over five years during the 1990s. The Institute has been undertaking a series of exercises in the form of p- lication and dissemination of study findings in the field since the early 1990‘s. In that series, this book is the latest one and is published in collaboration with Springer Science + Business Media BV, Dordrecht, The Netherlands.

Book Indo Nepal Relations

Download or read book Indo Nepal Relations written by Monika Mandal and published by K W Publishers Pvt Limited. This book was released on 2014 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India-Nepal Relations are unique for reasons ranging from geographical contiguity to intense cultural bonding. We share extensive institutional and social relationships. Cultural, economic and geographical factors as well as the common bond of a shared religion have had a great influence on bilateral relations. Despite some turbulence, India-Nepal relations have remained close, stable and mutually beneficial. And yet, as two sovereign nations, both India and Nepal are naturally guided by their national interests in cultural, economic and security issues. In this context a comprehensive analysis of the Indo-Nepal relations with their domestic determinants is of immense importance. The objective of this collection of essays is to provide a detailed analysis of the legal complexities that exist between Nepal and India and to analyse the major problems from an international legal perspective. It is hoped that this volume will fill the significant gap that exists in the literature on this subject, which is devoted more to political and economic issues than to legal ones. There is virtually no work which thoroughly examines the major international legal issues relating to Indo-Nepal relations.

Book The Triangle India Nepal China

Download or read book The Triangle India Nepal China written by S. C. Bhatt and published by Gyan Books. This book was released on 1996 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For ages, India has had a close and unique relationship with Nepal. Across the open border between the two countries millions of people travel to each other s country for their livelihood, for pleasure and social contacts. The border for all practical purposes does not exist and there is nor hassle of passports and visas, almost unparalleled anywhere in the world. Yet the political and diplomatic relations between the two countries have not been uniformly good. India s ties with the two close neighbnours, Nepal and China, and their inter-relationship form the subject of this book. To a substantial extent, Chinese foreign policy has influenced the course of Nepal s relations with India. A triangle is thus formed which is explored here in the context of treaties and agreements. Nepal is the focus of the book but India s relations with China are also examined in depth. The relevant treaties are reproduced for ready reference. India s ties with her neighbours have been close and special importance is attached to them in the framing and conduct of foreign policy. But the experience has not been uniformly happy. The problems encountered in the Indian policy towards Nepal and China have been discussed here in detail.

Book excerpt: A passionate indictment of the development policies being wrought by America in Nepal. Drawing heavily on the life stories of individual Nepalese, the author argues that both the economic winners and losers in this game are victimized by the structures and assumptions of Western development. He examines such issues as the growth of pot culture and prostitution, the growing poverty of the Nepalese poor, the subordination of Nepalese elites to Westerners, and the history of development policy in Nepal.
