Book Sunset Lessons

Book excerpt: I am fascinated by the impact of natural phenomena on the human psyche. We are all connected--to each other, and to the infinite cosmos that is our home. At times, I try to understand the science of these exquisite interactions. At times, I simply stand in awe, a humble observer. This is a series of reflections on the power and impact of the setting sun, as seen through the filter of tremendous grief and emerging hope. The work is dedicated with immeasurable gratitude to the life and legacy of my beautiful wife Karen, whose mortal journey ended prematurely during a spectacular sunrise and whose memory will forever be enshrined in the magical light of the setting sun.

Book excerpt: At age 60 Dr. Richard Morgan wrote No Wrinkles on the Soul as he faced the unknowns of aging and felt the need for a book to help himself and others navigate its challenges, especially the spiritual ones. Now 91, Morgan still faces many unknowns, and once again has written a book that describes how it feels to be old and encourages others in the same stage of life. "The years have taken a toll on my body," he writes, "but my mind and spirit are still young!" Light of Setting Suns contains stories of people age 90 and beyond who have remained vital and spiritually alive, including the author's own experiences. Morgan shows how to discover wellness, even in years of decline, and how these years may be unexpectedly rich and meaningful. This book shows readers that, even at an advanced age, they still have the opportunity to shine with the Spirit.

Book Reflections

Download or read book Reflections written by S Mohan Rao and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it fair to compare the lifestyle and choices of the current generation with that of the older generation? Should we seek specific, quantified results in our daily life or just aim to seek quality and happiness in all that we do? Can a blind practice, miscued as devotion, overrule discipline? Get insights into all these and more in this delightful account of Mohan Rao’s journey of self-discovery and learning. Reflections is an inspiring tale of the evolution of an ordinary man. The book is a purposeful recollection of the various turning points in Rao’s life and the people who left a lasting impression on him. Particularly interesting are Rao’s travel tales across the world and his brush with bureaucracy. Replete with interesting anecdotes, everlasting memories and powerful words of wisdom, Reflections makes you pause and ponder over the wonder that is life. "…quite reminiscent of the style and pace of the 'Malgudi Days.' Small incidents strung together without a plot into a nice story." -Mohan Sundaram, Vice President- The Association of People with Disability. “Reflections by S Mohan Rao is a book which captures a life lived with integrity, with purpose and with caring. In effect, a life lived well. Through his journey, Mohan also records the learnings from his work and personal experiences. These are useful for many who traverse life’s journey as they will also encounter similar challenges, opportunities and dilemmas. My favourite lines from Reflections are “Don’t we meet God everywhere, all the time? In the face of an innocent child, in nature, and in our parents’ benevolent nature, as they give everything to their loved ones with no expectations?” This positive attitude of looking for the best in our fellow humans and in our surroundings shines through in Mohan’s Reflections" -Ashok Soota | Executive Chairman |Happiest Minds Technologies.

Book The Sun Never Sets

Download or read book The Sun Never Sets written by L.W. "Bill" Lane, Jr. and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2013-05-08 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sun Never Sets tells the extraordinary story of L.W. "Bill" Lane, Jr., longtime publisher of Sunset magazine, pioneering environmentalist, and U.S. ambassador. Written with Stanford historian Bertrand Patenaude, this fascinating memoir traces Sunset's profound impact on a new generation of Americans seeking opportunity and adventure in the great American West. Bill Lane was a Californian whose life spanned a vital period of the state's emergence as the embodiment (or symbol) of the country's aspirations. His recollections offer readers a rich slice of the history of California and the West in the 20th century. Recounting his boyhood move from Iowa to California after his father purchased Sunset magazine in 1928, and his subsequent rise through the ranks of Sunset, Bill Lane's memoir evokes the American West that his magazine helped to shape. It illuminates the sources of Sunset's canny appeal and its manifold influence in the four major editorial fields it covered—travel, home, gardening, and cooking—while taking readers behind the scenes of American magazine publishing in the 20th century. The Sun Never Sets also reveals the evolution of Bill Lane's views and roles as an influential environmentalist and conservationist with strong connections to the national and California state parks, and it recounts his two stints as U.S. ambassador: in Japan in the 1970s, and in Australia in the 1980s. This memoir will especially appeal to readers interested in the history of the American West, environmental conservation and preservation, and publishing.

Book The Indies of the Setting Sun

Download or read book The Indies of the Setting Sun written by Ricardo Padrón and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2020-07-29 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Padrón reveals the evolution of Spain’s imagining of the New World as a space in continuity with Asia. Narratives of Europe’s westward expansion often tell of how the Americas came to be known as a distinct landmass, separate from Asia and uniquely positioned as new ground ripe for transatlantic colonialism. But this geographic vision of the Americas was not shared by all Europeans. While some imperialists imagined North and Central America as undiscovered land, the Spanish pushed to define the New World as part of a larger and eminently flexible geography that they called las Indias, and that by right, belonged to the Crown of Castile and León. Las Indias included all of the New World as well as East and Southeast Asia, although Spain’s understanding of the relationship between the two areas changed as the realities of the Pacific Rim came into sharper focus. At first, the Spanish insisted that North and Central America were an extension of the continent of Asia. Eventually, they came to understand East and Southeast Asia as a transpacific extension of their empire in America called las Indias del poniente, or the Indies of the Setting Sun. The Indies of the Setting Sun charts the Spanish vision of a transpacific imperial expanse, beginning with Balboa’s discovery of the South Sea and ending almost a hundred years later with Spain’s final push for control of the Pacific. Padrón traces a series of attempts—both cartographic and discursive—to map the space from Mexico to Malacca, revealing the geopolitical imaginations at play in the quest for control of the New World and Asia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After winning the presidency by a razor-thin victory on November 8, 1960, over Richard Nixon, Dwight D. Eisenhower’s former vice president, John F. Kennedy became the thirty-fifth president of the United States. But beneath the stately veneers of both Ike and JFK, there was a complex and consequential rivalry. In Rising Star, Setting Sun, John T. Shaw focuses on the intense ten-week transition between JFK’s electoral victory and his inauguration on January 20, 1961. In just over two months, America would transition into a new age, and nowhere was it more marked that in the generational and personal difference between these two men and their dueling visions for the country they led. The former general espoused frugality, prudence, and stewardship. The young political wu¨nderkid embodied dramatic themes and sweeping social change. Extensively researched and eloquently written, Shaw paints a vivid picture of what Time called a “turning point in the twentieth century” as Americans today find themselves poised on the cusp of another watershed moment in our nation’s history.
