Book The Effects of Travel Time Delay on Vehicle Miles Traveled and Travel Mode Choice Behavior

Download or read book The Effects of Travel Time Delay on Vehicle Miles Traveled and Travel Mode Choice Behavior written by Reza Sardari and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traffic congestion is a crucial factor for understanding travel behavior. The scientific evidence has shown that traffic congestion affects air quality, public health, and economic development, but empirical studies about the effects of travel time delays on travel behavior are limited. This research aims to address this gap by developing a time related mobility measure, or "delay score," and analyzing its impact on VMT and commuters' mode choices within a comprehensive framework that incorporates the built environment, demographics, and residential preference/self-selection factors. In this framework, VMT per household and travel mode choice were examined using SEM and GSEM techniques, respectively. This study used travel survey data from the 2015 Puget Sound Regional Council to analyze household daily VMT and commuter mode choice. Using GPS-based travel survey data combined with spatial analysis techniques, secondary data sources were considered in the analysis to examine factors such as VMT, non-motorized travel, and transit use. Built environment variables were measured at both the origins and destinations of trips. The study also incorporated socioeconomic and residential self-selection variables. Subsequently, factor analysis was used to represent residential self selection and the land use density dimension of the built environment. The findings indicate that higher travel time delay is associated with lower VMT per household, as doubling delay is associated with a 20 percent decrease in household VMT. The findings provide support for policies and regulations aiming to increase density and mixed-use development, reduce road capacity, and improve walkability and access to transit. Increasing the cost of driving relative to other modes is one strategy supported by smart growth policies to reduce VMT and encourage taking public transit or choosing non-motorized modes of travel. The findings suggest that access to free parking at workplaces encourages workers to drive alone, whereas providing free transit passes encourages them to take transit. Additionally, the results indicate that vehicle ownership--as a mid-term indicator--is more related to socioeconomic factors, whereas daily VMT--as a short-term indicator--is more related to built environment factors and residential self-selection. Future research should examine the effects of traffic congestion longitudinally and attempt to analyze disaggregated data at the national level to further our understanding of traffic congestion and its impacts on travel behavior.

Book Pay as you drive Experiment Findings

Download or read book Pay as you drive Experiment Findings written by Jeffrey Buxbaum and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Federal Highway Administration and the Minnesota Department of Transportation co-sponsored a demonstration to test how consumers would change their driving behavior if some of the fixed costs of owning and operating a car were to be converted to variable costs. One hundred and thirty participants were given devices that recorded mileage and time of travel. Prices per mile were assigned randomly to each participant, ranging from 5 cents per mile to 25 cents per mile. The findings indicate that per mile pricing does result in measurable, but small reductions in driving. The largest effect is on weekend driving and on peak weekday travel (as some participants were able to substitute mass transit for their vehicle). One key finding in this experiment is that those households that are willing to change their driving behavior will do so with low per mile cost incentives. On the other hand it was also determined that those households unable to change their behavior do not do so even under relatively higher cost incentives. Therefore, the marginal effect of per mile prices seems to drop off dramatically after some point in the lower range of prices.

Book Understanding the Growth in Non work VMT

Download or read book Understanding the Growth in Non work VMT written by Susan Handy and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents preliminary work to understand the apparent increase in non-work vehicle-miles-traveled (VMT) at household level. The first step was to review available data on travel trends to confirm that non-work VMT is in fact increasing. While available data sources provide convincing evidence of this trend, they are far from conclusive. The next step was to explore factors associated with households (demand side) and with the choices available to households (supply side). This exploration included an assessment of the trend in each factor and the development of hypotheses about its effect on non-work travel. The last step in this report was to summarize findings from existing models of non-work travel behavior on what variables significantly impact non-work travel and in what direction. The report concludes with a discussion of what questions remain and what research approaches may prove fruitful in answering them.

Book The Case for Moderate Growth in Vehicle Miles of Travel

This book was released on 2014-04-28 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report hypothesizes that the United States has reached a critical juncture in terms of national mobility trends and underlying socio-demographic conditions and travel behavior that will result in more moderate rates of annual vehicle miles of travel (VMT) growth in the future. However, slower VMT growth may not portend lower rates of congestion growth.

Book Home to work Trips and Travel

Download or read book Home to work Trips and Travel written by Arthur B. Sosslau and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report is part of a series that presents findings from the 1977 Nationwide Personal Transportation Study (NPTS). This report describes home-to-work trips and travel in 1977. The home-to-work trip purpose is explored relative to location, household composition factors such as drivers, income and occupation, and characteristics of travel such as mode of travel, time of day, and vehicle occupancy. Comparisons are made with data from the 1969 NPTS to evaluate trends in home-to-work trips and travel over time.
