Book Reducing Herbicide Residues from Agricultural Runoff and Seepage Water

Download or read book Reducing Herbicide Residues from Agricultural Runoff and Seepage Water written by George F. Antonious and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herbicide use while being of a great benefit in controlling weeds in agricultural systems can also pose a threat to environmental quality due to off-target and off-site impacts. The increasing concern about risks associated with agricultural chemicals and specifically their impact on surface and groundwater quality is a national and international concern. In Kentucky, herbicide off-site movement occurs, allowing them to enter the Kentucky River watershed and impact surface and groundwater quality. Accordingly, it is necessary to assess the distribution and degradation/dissipation of herbicides in agricultural soils and runoff water after field application and develop management practices and/or remediation techniques to mitigate environmental pollution by agrochemicals. The overall goal of the best management practices is to develop sustainable agricultural techniques that strike an acceptable balance between crop production benefits and ecological conservation by reducing herbicide impact on environmental quality to 1) protect watersheds by reducing the mobility of herbicides from soil into runoff and seepage water using binding agents; 2) enhance soil microbial activity that mineralizes herbicides in soil; and 3) enhance growers' knowledge about bioremediation techniques (soil amendments, biofilters, biochar, and soil microorganisms) that could be implemented to reduce herbicide mobility and protect natural water resources.

Book excerpt: Herbicides are one of the most widely used groups of pesticides worldwide for controlling weedy species in agricultural and non-crop settings. Due to the extensive use of herbicides and their value in weed management, herbicide research remains crucial for ensuring continued effective use of herbicides while minimizing detrimental effects to ecosystems. Presently, a wide range of research continues to focus on the physiology of herbicide action, the environmental impact of herbicides, and safety. The authors of Herbicides, Physiology of Action, and Safety cover multiple topics concerning current valuable herbicide research.

Book Herbicide Contamination of Surface Runoff Waters

Download or read book Herbicide Contamination of Surface Runoff Waters written by John O. Evans and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Field and laboratory studies of the movement of herbicides were conducted to determine their potential as contaminants in irrigation return flow. Special emphasis was given to the use of herbicides for vegetation control along ditches, canals and watersheds where high dosages are required to control the excessive growth of grasses and broadleaved weeds. The following herbicides have been studies: substituted urea (diuron), triazines (summitol and atrazine), phenoxyacetic acid (2, 4-D and 2, 4, 5-T) and a substituted pyridine (picloram). The greatest tendency for transport of herbicides in water coming in contact with soils occurs during the initial storms following spray application. If the intensity of the initial precipitation is not sufficient to cause movement across the soil, the danger of herbicide movement is essentially eliminated. The highest concentratoins (ppm) of herbicide observed in surface waters were 1.8, 0.5, 4.2 and 2.7 for diuron, summitol, 2, 4-D, 2, 4, 5-T and picloram, respectively. These levels were observed immediately below treated areas receiving the higher recommended dosages of the herbicides. All herbicide concentrations dropped below the limit of detection within a few hundred meters below the sprayed areas. Presumably, soil filtration, adsorption and dilution are primarily responsible for the loss of herbicides from water.

Book Environmental Chemistry of Herbicides

Download or read book Environmental Chemistry of Herbicides written by Raj Grover and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1990-11-21 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication is rare among those texts on pesticides in that it covers herbicides exclusively. It presents, in one source, information that is typically scattered. This important publication enables the reader to recommend herbicide use more reliably and efficiently. It also highlights environmental issues relevant to herbicide use in agriculture. The book outlines potential areas of further research. This title is of particular value to weed scientists, environmental chemists and engineers, soil scientists, and those responsible for recommending and/or regulating use of herbicides in agriculture. Focuses On: ? Increasing efficiency of herbicides in agriculture ? Decreasing environmental contamination with herbicides ? Dissipation and transformations in water and sediment ? Nature, transport, and fate of airborne residues ? Absorption and transport in plants ? Transformations in biosphere ? Bioaccumulation and food chain accumulation ? Photochemical transformations ? Bound residues ? Predictability and environmental chemistry

Book On farm Water Recycling and Herbicide Residues

Download or read book On farm Water Recycling and Herbicide Residues written by Kathleen H. Bowmer and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "The objectives were to investigate the advantages of irrigation water recycling on the farm, and the deterioration in water quality which might be associated with increases in salingity, nutrients, suspended particulate material and herbicide residues. Return flows represented about 26% of the water supplied, and all ions assiociated with salinity were substantially retained by the soil. Soluble inorganic nutrient losses in drainage water were 1.4 to 8.1% (N) and 0.1 to 0.8% (P) of those supplied. Several different sites were used to study contamination with herbicides. Background levels of diuron, atrazine, bromacil and glyphosate in surface waters were small or not detectable but higher concentrations of some herbicides occurred locally. These were atrazine in tail water from crops of maize; bromacil and diuron in tile drainage from citrus orchards; and TCA in supply water after use for aquatic weed control. The biolgocial significance of residues was investigated using a hydroponic assay system for root-active compunds on annual crops, and a long-term field trial for foliage-acting glyphosate on sprinkler-irrigated citrus. Recommendations for further studies include more detailed measurements of degradation of water quality with herbicides, including development of rapid assay methods; attention to changes in water quality and excessive plant growth in on-farm storages; and greater attention to the consequences of recycling for water quality chnages regionally. The long-term effects of changes in salinity and major ion balance on soil structure also need further investigation." -- p. iii.

Book Water Resource Pollution by Herbicide Residues

Download or read book Water Resource Pollution by Herbicide Residues written by Kassio Ferreira Mendes and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herbicides are frequently used in the chemical control of weeds in various crops in Brazil and worldwide, so they are more frequently detected outside the application areas, contributing to the risk of environmental contamination. The importance of knowledge of the physicochemical properties of the environment and the pesticide used in the agricultural area is in order to understand its effects on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and the search for the prevention of future bioaccumulation potentials (bioconcentration and/or biomagnification) of molecules of pesticides in living nontarget organisms, minimizing their negative effects on the environment. The understanding of analytical techniques for measuring the quality of water resources as well as techniques for the remediation of contaminated water is essential to minimize the possible impacts caused by the application of pesticides to the environment.
