Book Reducing Airlines Carbon Footprint

Download or read book Reducing Airlines Carbon Footprint written by Dr. Thomas F. Johnson and published by Morgan James Publishing. This book was released on 2020-10-06 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reducing Airline’s Carbon Footprint is the answer to the airline executives’ problems, when it comes to looking for ways to reduce aircraft operations cost. Reducing Airline’s Carbon Footprint introduces the Electric Taxi System, ETS. When commercial aircrafts are equipped with this system, the cost of operation will be reduced due to taxi without the main engines running. Also, the aircraft engines will not be ingesting foreign object debris (FOD) causing damage to the internal moving parts, and the airport area air pollution will see a decrease. This is the grey cloud that hovers over most busy airports. Reducing Airline’s Carbon Footprint breaks through this cloud by providing ETS as the solution. Throughout its pages, Dr. Thomas F Johnson addresses these benefits of ETS: Improvement of Airport Area Air Quality Reduce aircraft carbon footprint Potential Costs of ETS Installation Fuel Consumption Evaluation before and after ETS installation Ground Taxi Time Evaluation Improved Airport Terminal Accessibility Landing Gear Compatibility for the ETS Installation

Book Commercial Aircraft Propulsion and Energy Systems Research

Download or read book Commercial Aircraft Propulsion and Energy Systems Research written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2016-08-09 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary human activities that release carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere are the combustion of fossil fuels (coal, natural gas, and oil) to generate electricity, the provision of energy for transportation, and as a consequence of some industrial processes. Although aviation CO2 emissions only make up approximately 2.0 to 2.5 percent of total global annual CO2 emissions, research to reduce CO2 emissions is urgent because (1) such reductions may be legislated even as commercial air travel grows, (2) because it takes new technology a long time to propagate into and through the aviation fleet, and (3) because of the ongoing impact of global CO2 emissions. Commercial Aircraft Propulsion and Energy Systems Research develops a national research agenda for reducing CO2 emissions from commercial aviation. This report focuses on propulsion and energy technologies for reducing carbon emissions from large, commercial aircraftâ€" single-aisle and twin-aisle aircraft that carry 100 or more passengersâ€"because such aircraft account for more than 90 percent of global emissions from commercial aircraft. Moreover, while smaller aircraft also emit CO2, they make only a minor contribution to global emissions, and many technologies that reduce CO2 emissions for large aircraft also apply to smaller aircraft. As commercial aviation continues to grow in terms of revenue-passenger miles and cargo ton miles, CO2 emissions are expected to increase. To reduce the contribution of aviation to climate change, it is essential to improve the effectiveness of ongoing efforts to reduce emissions and initiate research into new approaches.

  • ISBN : 1136318194
  • Pages : 493 pages

Download or read book Green Aviation written by Emily S. Nelson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-06-12 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aircraft emissions currently account for ~3.5% of all greenhouse gas emissions. The number of passenger miles has increased by 5% annually despite 9/11, two wars and gloomy economic conditions. Since aircraft have no viable alternative to the internal combustion engine, improvements in aircraft efficiency and alternative fuel development become essential. This book comprehensively covers the relevant issues in green aviation. Environmental impacts, technology advances, public policy and economics are intricately linked to the pace of development that will be realized in the coming decades. Experts from NASA, industry and academia review current technology development in green aviation that will carry the industry through 2025 and beyond. This includes increased efficiency through better propulsion systems, reduced drag airframes, advanced materials and operational changes. Clean combustion and emission control of noise, exhaust gases and particulates are also addressed through combustor design and the use of alternative fuels. Economic imperatives from aircraft lifetime and maintenance logistics dictate the drive for "drop-in" fuels, blending jet-grade and biofuel. New certification standards for alternative fuels are outlined. Life Cycle Assessments are used to evaluate worldwide biofuel approaches, highlighting that there is no single rational approach for sustainable buildup. In fact, unless local conditions are considered, the use of biofuels can create a net increase in environmental impact as a result of biofuel manufacturing processes. Governmental experts evaluate current and future regulations and their impact on green aviation. Sustainable approaches to biofuel development are discussed for locations around the globe, including the US, EU, Brazil, China and India.

Book More Electric Systems Architecture Effect on Business Jet Performance

Download or read book More Electric Systems Architecture Effect on Business Jet Performance written by Kelsey M. Mazur and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A more-electric systems architecture, using current state of the art components, is proposed for the business jet Dassault Falcon 2000. A model of the existing aircraft, both of its overall flying characteristics and performance and of its detail systems layout, is created using Pacelab APD© and SysArc© programs. The model is validated with respect to the aircraft published data. Then, another model of the same aircraft is created but, this time, it is for the aircraft with the new architecture and their respective performance is compared. In particular, this results in changes in mission range and the overall system's weight. The proposed more-electric architecture replaces the hydraulic actuators for the flight controls with electro-hydrostatic and electro-mechanical actuators; the engine off-takes (bleed) for cabin pressurization and wing de-icing with electrically driven compressors and electrical heating mats, respectively. It is ensured that the new architecture possesses the same or higher level of safety by the incorporation of redundancy and auxiliary systems such as extra batteries and a ram air turbine. The more-electric Falcon was found to be 700 lb heavier, which is a 27% increase. The thrust specific fuel consumption at cruise was reduced 0.5% by the practical suppression of the engine bleed. However, this was not sufficient to offset the weight penalty and the aircraft range was reduced from 3,275 to 2,600 NM, a 20% negative impact. Therefore, it is concluded that, with the current technology, a more-electric aircraft based on the exchange of current by electrical systems is not an attractive preposition. However, the constant improvement in the performance and weight to power ratios of electronic and electrical components does not preclude their implementation in the future and, if the more-electric paradigm is incorporated from the conceptual and preliminary design stages higher benefits may be possible.

Book Impact of On ground Taxiing with Electric Powered Tow trucks on Congestion Cost and Carbon Emissions at Montreal Trudeau International Airport

Download or read book Impact of On ground Taxiing with Electric Powered Tow trucks on Congestion Cost and Carbon Emissions at Montreal Trudeau International Airport written by Abdulrazaq Lemu Salihu and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyday millions of litres of jet fuel are burnt during the aircraft's on-ground taxiing operations, releasing tons of greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere. Aircraft manufacturers and researchers believe that replacing the current aircraft taxiing operation with more efficient on-ground taxiing operations could meet future market requirements. Multiple factors such as safety, airport throughput, energy efficiency, air emissions, and total cost need to be considered when designing airport taxi operations. This research reports on the performance of utilizing electric tow-trucks during on-ground taxiing operations. It builds on previous studies to assess the impact of the initial investment of implementing these alternative taxi system on congestion, cost and carbon emission on the on-ground taxi operations. We developed a Discrete Event Simulation model to schedule electric powered tow-trucks to provide taxiing services to aircrafts. The simulation enables aircrafts to request an available tow-truck or use aircraft engines to perform taxiing operations. The performance measurements of the taxiing operations were based on total fuel consumption, emission, traffic delays and total cost of implementing the operational strategy. Montreal-Pierre Elliot Trudeau International Airport was selected as a case study. Based on the presented methodology, the result exhibits that utilizing electric-powered tow-trucks to perform all on-ground taxiing operations is the best practical solution to meet the future market requirements. The conducted investigation indicates that this approach provides both economic and environmental benefits to the aviation industry. Three extensive sets of numerical analysis have been conducted to provide better insights into the problem. In each part of these analysis, different determinant factors such as the total cost, fuel consumption, delay and emissions have been used to compare the obtained results of the proposed approach with the current situation at the airport. After analyzing the results, an environmentally friendly and economically efficient approach is offered.
