Book Studies in Natural Products Chemistry

Download or read book Studies in Natural Products Chemistry written by Idha Kusumawati and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-06-25 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many cosmetics that are marketed nowadays often contain antioxidants as the active ingredients. It is known that oxidation reactions could produce free radicals, which can start chain reactions that will damage skin cells. Increasing the amount of free radicals could initiate the wrinkling, photoaging, elastosis, drying, and pigmentation of the skin. Topical antioxidants could terminate the chain reactions by removing the free radical intermediates and inhibit other oxidation reactions by being oxidized themselves; this could defend the skin against the environmental stress caused by free radicals. It is well known that plants can produce natural antioxidant compounds that could control the oxidative stress caused by sunlight and oxygen. Many patents and commercial cosmetic products have various combinations of plant extracts. The cosmetic formulations usually contain various combinations of many plant extracts, for example, green tea, rosemary, grape seed, basil grape, blueberry, tomato, acerola seed, pine bark, and milk thistle. These plants extracts contain natural antioxidants, that is, polyphenols, flavonoids, flavanols, stilbens, and terpenes (including carotenoids and essential oils). Some commercial products contain pure natural compounds such as quercetin, kojic acid, and resveratrol in their formulation. The choice of the right active plant extracts or compounds, the confirmation of their activity, and their stability and synergistic effects in cosmetic products are the important factors for the formulation of an effective product.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oxidative rancidity is a major cause of food quality deterioration, leading to the formation of undesirable off-flavours as well as unhealthful compounds. Antioxidants are widely employed to inhibit oxidation, and with current consumer concerns about synthetic additives and natural antioxidants are of much interest. The two volumes of Oxidation in foods and beverages and antioxidant applications review food quality deterioration due to oxidation and methods for its control. The first volume focuses on oxidation mechanisms and antioxidant activity. Initial chapters in part one describe oxidation processes in foods, including the role of metals, heme proteins and lipoxygenase. The impact of oxidation on food flavour and the health aspects of oxidized fats are also covered. Final chapters in part one review the measurement of the extent of lipid oxidation and methods for food shelf-life determination. Part two discusses the ways in which antioxidants inhibit food oxidation, factors affecting antioxidant efficacy, methods to measure antioxidant activity and novel antioxidants. With its distinguished international team of editors and contributors, the two volumes of Oxidation in foods and beverages and antioxidant applications is standard references for R&D and QA professionals in the food industry, as well as academic researchers interested in food quality. • Pages : 361 pages

Download or read book Natural Antioxidants written by and published by . This book was released on 2018-05 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Antioxidants are substances that delay or inhibit the oxidation of foods, and are therefore of great interest to food scientists. Antioxidants are naturally present in foods, but at very low levels. Therefore, additional quantities are added to control oxidation, increase shelf life, and improve overall quality. Due to the wide availability of natural antioxidants and the increasing concerns on the safety of synthetic antioxidants, the beneficial effects of natural antioxidants on the maintenance of human health have become an important topic among scientific researches worldwide. Research showed that multiple natural products including polyphenols, flavonoids, vitamins, carotenoids, polysaccharides, alkaloids and saponins could scavenge excessive free radicals in cells effectively. Searching for new antioxidants from natural products has become an inevitable trend for the modern food and medicine industries.Natural Antioxidants provides an overview of natural antioxidants, their sources, methods of extraction, regulatory aspects, and application techniques, specifically focusing on different foods of animal origin to improve their oxidative stability. The major species of natural antioxidants in foods that are benefit for the prevention and treatments of diseases have been summarized. Meanwhile, the research progress and future development have also been proposed. All of these studies, on the one hand, can provide a theoretical basis for the development of drugs and healthy foods; on the other hand, can offer novel development ideas for food industry, especially for food additive industry. The aim of this book is to conclude the progress of natural antioxidants research and provide a theoretical basis for the development of healthy food and drugs. Book Antioxidants Natural and Synthetic

Download or read book Antioxidants Natural and Synthetic written by Asim Kumar Mukhopadhyay and published by Amani Int'l Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a paradox that on one hand oxygen saves hundreds of critical patients by rejuvenating their lives, and has multiple users in industry including steel plants, on the other oxygen is the primary reason for oxidative degradation of foods and rancidity of fats and oils and polymers including plastics, rubber and also paints. In other words oxygen surprisingly acts as a poison and a degrading agent - an inhibitor - for deterioration of food and related products particularly those in packed condition. To annul the negative effect of Oxygen, Nitrogen blanketing has been effectively used as an inhibitor of oxidative degeneration. At least this helps in increase of shelf lifeand protects the packaged materials for a longer period. It may however be added that some foods including fats and oils have inherent oxygen deterrents which neutralizes effect of oxygen for quite some time. Food and other products are also saved from aerobic bacteria and fungi due to elimination of oxygen or presence of minimal quantity of oxygen.
