Book Rediscovering the Lord s Supper

Download or read book Rediscovering the Lord s Supper written by Markus Barth and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2006-09-01 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following his father's classic work CHURCH DOGMATICS, Markus Barth considered the doctrine of the Lord's Supper, which, had not received a full treatment. His work resulted in an exegesis of the Lord's Supper texts in the Synoptics, the Fourth Gospel, and the Pauline letters. His perspective sees the Lord's supper and its accomanying Agape meal as a symbolic event that allows God's people to commune in an atmosphere that remains open to all, including the Jews, whose Passover continues to shed light on this sacrament. His presentation covers the Lord's Supper, Passover, the relationship of Christians and Jews, and the participation of children in communion. He challenges the definitions of Baptism, Eucharist, and Ministry as expressed in the Lima Document, offering one of the most sharply stated alternatives available. His discussion provides a reexamination of the Lord's Supper as a symbol of ecumenism--the opportunity for all God's people to celebrate together. This approach makes an important ecumenical contribution to understanding the Lord's Supper from a New Testament perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Celebrating the Lord’s Supper,” says award-winning author and theologian J. Todd Billings, “can change lives.” In this book Billings shows how a renewed theology and practice of the Lord’s Supper can lead Christians to rediscover the full richness and depth of the gospel. With an eye for helping congregations move beyond common reductions of the gospel, he develops a vibrant, biblical, and distinctly Reformed sacramental theology and explores how it might apply within a variety of church contexts, from Baptist to Presbyterian, nondenominational to Anglican. At once strikingly new and deeply traditional, Remembrance, Communion, and Hope will surprise and challenge readers, inspiring them to a new understanding of—and appreciation for—the embodied, Christ-disclosing drama of the Lord’s Supper.

This book is an organized and convenient introduction to how to read the church fathers from AD 100 to 500. Michael Haykin surveys the lives and teachings of seven of the Fathers, looking at their role in such issues as baptism, martyrdom, and the relationship between church and state. Ignatius, Cyprian, Basil of Caesarea, and Ambrose and others were foundational in the growth and purity of early Christianity, and their impact continues to shape the church today. Book excerpt: "Wolfgang Vondey contends that the story of the church is a story of "the people of bread." The image of bread is one of the richest and, at the same time, one of the most neglected biblical images that speak to an ecumenical understanding of the church. Drawing from scripture, from writers of the early church, and from cutting-edge debates in contemporary scholarship, Vondey unfolds the social, moral, missiological, ecumenical, and eschatological dimensions of the church, based on the story of bread that far exceeds a eucharistic interpretation. People of Bread speaks to a growing interest in an understanding of the church by addressing the widespread revival of the theological imagination."--BOOK JACKET.

Book The Death of the Messiah and the Birth of the New Covenant

Download or read book The Death of the Messiah and the Birth of the New Covenant written by Michael J. Gorman and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-06-27 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking book, Michael Gorman asks why there is no theory or model of the atonement called the "new-covenant" model, since this understanding of the atonement is likely the earliest in the Christian tradition, going back to Jesus himself. Gorman argues that most models of the atonement over-emphasize the penultimate purposes of Jesus' death and the "mechanics" of the atonement, rather than its ultimate purpose: to create a transformed, Spirit-filled people of God. The New Testament's various atonement metaphors are part of a remarkably coherent picture of Jesus' death as that which brings about the new covenant (and thus the new community) promised by the prophets, which is also the covenant of peace. Gorman therefore proposes a new model of the atonement that is really not new at all--the new-covenant model. He argues that this is not merely an ancient model in need of rediscovery, but also a more comprehensive, integrated, participatory, communal, and missional model than any of the major models in the tradition. Life in this new covenant, Gorman argues, is a life of communal and individual participation in Jesus' faithful, loving, peacemaking death. Written for both academics and church leaders, this book will challenge all who read it to re-think and re-articulate the meaning of Christ's death for us.
