Download or read book In Search of Pre Classical Antiquity Rediscovering Ancient Peoples in Mediterranean Europe 19th and 20th c written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-11-28 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book aims rethinking the cultural history of Mediterranean nationalisms between 19th and 20th centuries by tracing their specific approach to antiquity in the forging of a national past. By focusing on how national imaginaries dealt with this topic and how history and archaeology relied on antiquity, this collection of essays introduces a comparative approach presenting several cases studies concerning many regions including Spain, Italy and Slovenia as well as Albania, Greece and Turkey. By adopting the perspective of a dialogue among all these Mediterranean political cultures, this book breaks significantly new ground, because it shifts attention on how Southern Europe nationalisms are an interconnected political and cultural experience, directly related to the intellectual examples of Northern Europe, but also developing its own particular trends. Contributors are: Çiğdem Atakuman, Filippo Carlà, Francisco Garcia Alonso, Maja Gori, Eleni Stefanou, Rok Stergar, Katia Visconti.

Book Kings and Queens of Ancient Albania Unraveling the Enigmatic Past

Download or read book Kings and Queens of Ancient Albania Unraveling the Enigmatic Past written by Spartak Fikaj and published by Spartak Fikaj. This book was released on 2023-07-31 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the annals of history, there are civilizations that emerge from the shadows of time, enigmatic and alluring, leaving behind a legacy that continues to captivate our imagination. Among these enigmatic civilizations lies the ancient land of Albania, shrouded in mystery and rich in historical intrigue. Nestled in the heart of the Balkans, this ancient region bore witness to the rise and fall of illustrious rulers - the Kings and Queens of Ancient Albania, whose stories beckon us to uncover the secrets of their captivating past. Our journey into the enigmatic world of ancient Albania begins with the allure of Illyria, the land that birthed these remarkable rulers. Beyond the pages of ancient texts and the fragments of inscriptions, we embark on a quest to unravel the forgotten chronicles of Illyria's origins and foundations. From the shadowy realms of prehistory to the emergence of tribal confederacies, we are drawn into a world of cultural intermingling and evolving societies. At the heart of this narrative stands Bardylis, a powerful Illyrian king whose name echoes through the annals of history. As we peer into the depths of time, we witness the rise of this ambitious monarch, founder of the Ardiaean Kingdom in the 4th century BCE. His vision and conquests laid the foundation for a kingdom that would endure through the annals of time, shaping the destiny of the land that would later become Albania. Glaukias, a chieftain of the Taulantii tribe, emerges as another key figure in the saga of ancient Albania. His short-lived Illyrian kingdom in the 3rd century BCE left a fleeting but significant mark on the region's history, raising questions about the intricate politics and rivalries of that era. As our journey continues, we encounter Agron, a figure whose legacy intertwines with that of Queen Teuta. Ruling over the Ardiaean Kingdom in the 3rd century BCE, Agron's reign set the stage for his indomitable wife, Queen Teuta, to take the reins of power upon his untimely demise. Her reign would be marked by a conflict with the Roman Republic, a confrontation that would not only shape the course of her kingdom but also leave an enduring mark on the pages of history.

Download or read book Sites of the Dictators written by Xosé M. Núñez Seixas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-06-13 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the changing evolution of memory debates on places intimately linked to the lives and deaths of different fascist, para-fascist and communist dictators in a truly transnational and comparative way. During the second decade of the twenty-first century, a number of parallel debates arose in Italy, Spain, Portugal, Albania, Austria and other European countries regarding the public management by democratic regimes of those sites of memory that were directly linked to the personal biographies of their former dictators. The ways in which each democracy deals with the dead bodies, mausoleums and birthplaces of the dictators vary considerably, although common questions occur, such as whether oblivion or re-signification is better, the risk of a posthumous cult of personality being established and the extent to which the shadow of the authoritarian past endures in these sites of memory. Using the concept of "sites of the dictators", the author explains why it is so difficult to deal with some sites of memory linked to dead autocrats, as those places contribute directly or indirectly to humanizing them, making their remembrance more acceptable for the present and future generations, and discusses the potential of the "Europeanization" of these "dark" memories of the past. Exploring the imperatives of memory politics and how these are reconciled with local actors interested in exploiting the dictator’s remembrance, this book will be useful reading for students and scholars of history, politics and memory studies.

  • Pages : 357 pages

Download or read book Modern Albania written by Fred C. Abrahams and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2016-03 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1990s, Albania, arguably Europe’s most closed and repressive state, began a startling transition out of forty years of self-imposed Communist isolation. Albanians who were not allowed to practice religion, travel abroad, wear jeans, or read “decadent” Western literature began to devour the outside world. They opened cafés, companies, and newspapers. Previously banned rock music blared in the streets. Modern Albania offers a vivid history of the Albanian Communist regime’s fall and the trials and tribulations that led the country to become the state it is today. The book provides an in-depth look at the Communists' last Politburo meetings and the first student revolts, the fall of the Stalinist regime, the outflows of refugees, the crash of the massive pyramid-loan schemes, the war in neighboring Kosovo, and Albania’s relationship with the United States. Fred Abrahams weaves together personal experience from more than twenty years of work in Albania, interviews with key Albanians and foreigners who played a role in the country’s politics since 1990—including former Politburo members, opposition leaders, intelligence agents, diplomats, and founders of the Kosovo Liberation Army—and a close examination of hundreds of previously secret government records from Albania and the United States. A rich, narratively-driven account, Modern Albania gives readers a front-row seat to the dramatic events of the last battle of Cold War Europe.

This rich empirical material is analysed with reference to an extensive body of literature. Book excerpt: Albania, on the Balkan coast of the Adriatic Sea, is almost the land that time forgot. Waiting to be rediscovered, it is a country rich in natural resources, history, traditions, and culture. Romans, Byzantines, Slavs, Venetians, and Ottoman Turks all left their mark. In modern times, after briefly gaining independence, Albania endured decades of oppression under Italian Fascist, Nazi German, and hard-line Communist rule, and was in the iron grip of the Stalinist dictator Enver Hoxa for thirty-seven years. It emerged from total isolation in the 1980s, cautiously at first, and then with gusto. Student protests in 1991 led to the fall of the Communist regime, since when the country has made remarkable progress toward democratization and economic stability. It has been welcomed into the international community, becoming a member of NATO in 2009, and applying for EU membership in the same year. While many European countries are experiencing economic decline, Albania has enjoyed strong economic growth. It is open to foreign investment, and eager to share its culture with the world. Albanians are sociable, hospitable, opinionated, and proud. Family counts above all else. Close-knit, even clannish to Western eyes, they also have unique history of religious tolerance. Even under Nazi occupation they provided a safe haven for Jews. Most Albanians are nominally Muslim, but society is very secular, and people of all religions live together in harmony. Cultures Smart! Albania gives you the key to understanding modern Albanians. It explains their customs and traditions, offers insights into social values and attitudes, and equips you to engage with people in an informed and open way. It is impossible to visit this extraordinary country without being fascinated by its unusual cultural heritage, appreciating its beautiful coastline, and enjoying the friendliness of its people.

Book A Concise History of Albania

Download or read book A Concise History of Albania written by Bernd J. Fischer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-09-29 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Concise History of Albania charts the history of Albania and its people, within their Balkan and European contexts. It shows the country's journey from its ancient past, still shrouded in mystery and controversy, through its difficult transition from a particularly brutal form of communism to an evolving form of democracy and a market economy. Bernd Fischer and Oliver Schmitt challenge some of the traditional narratives concerning the origins of the Albanians, and the relations between Albanians and their Balkan neighbours. This authoritative and up-to-date single-volume history analyses the political, social, economic, and cultural developments which led to the creation of the Albanian state and the modern nation, as well as Albania's more recent experience with authoritarianism, war, and communism. It greatly contributes to our understanding of the challenges facing contemporary Albanians, as well as the issues confronting the region as a whole as it attempts to grapple with one of the last remaining significant ethnic issues in the Balkans.
