Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work addresses the questions of what criteria make a Native American autobiography culturally authentic and what does "communal narrative" mean. Sellers completed extensive research on the literary genre Native American Autobiography, as well as an overall study of literary criticism of Native American writing. the research was balanced with an additional focused study on traditional Iroquois women's rituals, sociopolitical roles, and history. A significant portion of the research focused on analyzing the Native American literary criticism of Dr. Arnold Krupat, which has been definitive in the field, and writing a new approach for defining and understanding Native American Autobiography. While Krupat has focused on the works written by Europeans in the name of Native Americans, Hertha Wong, who has also made significant contributions in this genre, has shown how attention to Native culture provides a far more nuanced reading of the possibilities of autobiography. Her study argues that early indigenous pictographs and artwork are as autobiographical as written words on paper. Using Native North American Eastern Woodlands culture, the work shows how a "modern" text can be appropriately read as the autobiography of a long-dead woman, specifically Mohawk diplomat Tekonwatonti (circa 1736--1796). This demonstrates communal narrative and is a traditional component of Eastern Woodlands culture. the differences in Iroquois and EuroAmerican cultures in their perceptions of women and literature were highlighted. A case study was completed on the life of Tekonwatonti and integrates both the research components. the researcher's study illustrates a successful, culturally-accurate work of Native American autobiography; the matrifocal power structure of the Iroquois; Native American methodology in literary analysis; and the historic relationship between Native Americans and EuroAmericans during colonization. A chapter by chapter literary analysis of a Mohawk communal work by poet Maurice Kenny entitled Tekonwatonti (Molly Brant): Poems of War was used for the case study. the analysis of Kelly's work demonstrates the researcher's newly created rubric for the study of works about Native Americans, and works co-written with EuroAmericans pre-1900s before Natives began primarily writing their own works in English. This study has implications for all literary analysis of Native American literature, and of Native American Autobiography in particular. the study also raises important questions about the efficacy of works about Native American women, noting that the vastly different cultural perceptions of women in Native and western culture are a significant barrier to accuracy in both biographical and critical literary works.

Historically, Native American autobiographers have written in the shadow of "Indian law," a nuanced form of natural law discourse with its own set of related institutions and forms (the reservation, the treaty, etc.). In Sovereign Selves, David J. Carlson develops a rigorously historicized argument about the relationship between the specific colonial model of "Indian" identity that was developed and disseminated through U.S. legal institutions, and the acts of autobiographical self-definition by the "colonized" Indians expected to fit that model. Carlson argues that by drawing on the conventions of early colonial treaty-making, nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Indian autobiographers sought to adapt and redefine the terms of Indian law as a way to assert specific property-based and civil rights. Focusing primarily on the autobiographical careers of two major writers (William Apess and Charles Eastman), Sovereign Selves traces the way that their sustained engagement with colonial legal institutions gradually enabled them to produce a new rhetoric of "Indianness."

Book excerpt: Native American women's autobiographies are complex writings that stretch the very genre itself. As the genre of autobiography is reinvented by both early and contemporary texts, the nature of self expression through that genre is also reinvented. With Leslie Marmon Silko's inventive 1981 autobiography Storyteller as the guide post for what an autobiography can be, I examine other autobiographies by Native American women that come before and after this work, naming some works autobiographies for the first time. Naming a work an autobiography gives credence to the autobiographer's chosen means of writing her life. Native American women reveal who they are in their writing by revealing who their community is. Their choice to focus on their community by mixing genres and voices in their narratives reveals their belief that self cannot be expressed in isolation. This dissertation covers both early autobiographies--Sarah Winnemucca's trail-blazing 1883 autobiography Life Among the Piutes and Zitkala-Sa's fascinating 1920 autobiography American Indian Stories--and contemporary works--Silko's influential 1981 Storyteller, Anna Lee Walters' 1992 Talking Indian, which includes many short stories, and Luci Tapahonso's 1993 Saanii Dahataal/The Women Are Singing, which favors the poetic style. Lastly, this dissertation will examine the 1997 compilation Reinventing the Enemy's Language, edited by Gloria Bird and Joy Harjo. Together under the umbrella of autobiography these works suggest that Native women writers have reinvented not only the genre but the very idea of the self.
