Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You only live once—if then. Life is short, and it can be as easily wasted as lived to the full. In our harried modern world, how do we make the most of the time we have? In these fast and superficial times, Os Guinness calls us to consequential living. As a contrast to both Eastern and secularist views of time, he restructures our very notion of history as linear and purposeful, not as cyclical or meaningless. In the Judeo-Christian tradition, time and history are meaningful, and human beings have agency to live with freedom and consequence in partnership with God. Thus we can seek to serve God's intentions for our generation and discern our call for this moment. Our time on earth has significance. Live rightly, discern the times, and redeem the day.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Mission Studies

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Mission Studies written by Kirsteen Kim and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-04-18 with total page 769 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Mission Studies represents more than a century of scholarship related to the theology, history, and methodology of the propagation of Christian faith and the engagement of Christians with cultures, religions, and societies worldwide. It contains more than 40 articles by experts from different disciplinary and ecclesial perspectives, who are from all continents. It not only offers a broad overview of key approaches and issues in mission studies but it also highlights current trends and suggests future developments. The Handbook builds on renewed interest in mission studies this century generated by recent key statements on mission from ecumenical, evangelical, Catholic, and Orthodox sources, and by a spate of academic works on the topic. Western church leaders now apply insights from foreign missions (such as, inculturation, liberation, interfaith work, and power encounter) to today's multicultural societies. Meanwhile, there are new initiatives in mission from the Majority World, where most Christians live, so that sending is not only 'from the west to the rest' but 'from everywhere to everywhere'. Therefore, this volume aims to reflect the voices of the receivers of mission as well as its protagonists and to raise awareness of new movements. In a time of growing recognition of 'religions' more generally, this work examines and theorizes the missional dimensions of the world's largest religion: its agendas, growth, outreach, role in public life, effect on cultures, relevance for development, and its approaches to other communities.

When fifteen-year-old Julia Beaufort-Stuart wakes up in the hospital, she knows the lazy summer break she'd imagined won't be exactly what she anticipated. And once she returns to her grandfather's estate, a bit banged up but alive, she begins to realize that her injury might not have been an accident. One of her family's employees is missing, and he disappeared on the very same day she landed in the hospital. Desperate to figure out what happened, she befriends Euan McEwen, the Scottish Traveler boy who found her when she was injured, and his standoffish sister, Ellen. As Julie grows closer to this family, she witnesses firsthand some of the prejudices they've grown used to-a stark contrast to her own upbringing-and finds herself exploring thrilling new experiences that have nothing to do with a missing-person investigation. Her memory of that day returns to her in pieces, and when a body is discovered, her new friends are caught in the crosshairs of long-held biases about Travelers. Julie must get to the bottom of the mystery in order to keep them from being framed for the crime. This exhilarating coming-of-age story, a prequel to the Printz Honor Book Code Name Verity, returns to a beloved character just before she first takes flight.

Book excerpt: Our perception of God makes a difference in every crevice of our character, from our inner anxieties to our public conversations. It determines whether we're trusting or suspicious, whether we're happy or discontent - and whether or not we can rely on God matters mightily on the day of our death. Mark Buchanan's third book continues his penetrating exploration of the God we worship. Bravely and honestly, he poses the direst question of human existence: Can God be trusted? It's life drunk deeply, lived to the hilt—where we walk with the God who is surprising, dangerous, and mysterious. It's the terrain where God doesn't make sense out of our disasters and our boredom, but keeps meeting us in the thick of them. But unless we trust in His character, we'll never venture in. We will sit at the stream all day, dying of thirst, but not daring to drink. To follow God is to drink and drink from the stream, even if it means—especially if it means—getting swallowed up. Let Mark Buchanan show you the entrance to the Holy Wild, where you can live face-to-face with the beautiful, dangerous God of creation.

Book When the Eternal Can Be Met

Download or read book When the Eternal Can Be Met written by Corey Latta and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-04-14 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Eternal Can Be Met excavates the philosophy behind the theology of the twentieth century's most prominent Christian writers: C. S. Lewis, T. S. Eliot, and W. H. Auden. These three literary giants converted to Christianity within little more than a decade of one another, and interestingly, all three theological authors turned to the theme of time. All three authors also came to remarkably similar conclusions about time, positing that the temporal present moment allowed one to meet the eternal. Decades before Lewis, Eliot, and Auden sought to creatively construct a fictive or poetic theology of time, the prominent philosopher Henri Bergson wrote about time's power to transform an individual's emotional and spiritual state, a theory well known by Lewis, Eliot, and Auden. When the Eternal Can Be Met argues that one cannot fully understand Lewis, Eliot, and Auden's theology of time without understanding Bergson's theories. From the secular philosophy of Bergson dawned the most important works of literary theology and treatments of time of the twentieth century, and in the Bergson-influenced literary constructs of Lewis, Eliot, and Auden, a common theological articulation sounds out--time present is where humans meet God.

Book excerpt: Are you a people pleaser who takes on too much and then disappoints the same people you were trying to impress? Does your own insecurity cause you to diminish the success of others? Once you accept responsibility, you can begin to make amends and prevent yourself from repeating the same offenses. My path to Redemption has taken me through the fire and the flood both at the same time. It has guided me to discover my redemptive purpose and live the life God created for me. Why did I do it? Self-forgiveness can become self-delusion if you don't accept the blame for what you've done. Don't make excuses, rationalize your behavior or blame other people. Look inside yourself to understand the root of your behavior. My name is Mary Bowers, I was born in Washington, NC to the parents of the late Rev. Willie James Acklin and Annie Mary Acklin. My passion for writing began at the age of nine. I would write about anything and everything that caught my fancy ... from the flowers blooming in my mother's garden, to the birds flying in the air. Now as an adult and published author of many inspirational books, I felt this was God's Divine Purpose for my life. I write about the Power of Trying because I want to be okay with failing. I write about Generosity because I battle with selfishness. I write about Joy because I know sorrow. I write about Faith because I almost lost mine, and I know what it is to be broken and in need of Redemption. I write about Gratitude because I am truly thankful for all of it! My life experiences allow me to fill my paper with the breaths of my heart, and enrich the lives of those who will read my work. In the process, I enrich my own life as well. I write because I must! It's not a choice or pastime for me, it is an unyielding calling and my greatest passion. I write my dreams and even my nightmares. But most importantly, I write through my laughter and my tears. I write through every chapter of my pain and my glory. This is who I am! This is what I hunger and thirst for! This is my drug of choice!
