Book 200 Year Old Red Sea Urchins

Download or read book 200 Year Old Red Sea Urchins written by Topper Evans and published by Gareth Stevens Publishing LLLP. This book was released on 2016-12-15 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ocean is full of amazing creatures we know little about. Red sea urchins are one of those creatures. Previously thought to only live a few decades, scientists now think they can live up to 200 years! Through colorful photographs showing these bright creatures living in their shallow ocean habitats, readers learn exactly how these animals sustain long lives in the water. They also discover how scientists used atomic bomb testing research to decide these animals can live well over a century.

This book was released on 2016 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integrated assessments are a tool that can help decision makers understand complex environmental problems. Climate change has the potential to impact managed resources in terms social and economic factors, as well as causing changes to biogeochemical cycles and subsequent changes to species that these cycles affect. The U.S. west coast red sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus franciscanus) fisheries stand to be affected by climate change-related stressors such as ocean acidification, rising ocean temperatures, and changes in the frequency and intensity of ENSO events. An integrated assessment of the institutional and ecological contexts of two red sea urchin fishery case studies outlines existing knowledge gaps that may impede management efforts when it comes to the sustainability and vulnerability of these marine resources under threats from climate change.

Book Edible Sea Urchins Biology and Ecology

Download or read book Edible Sea Urchins Biology and Ecology written by John M. Lawrence and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2006-12-07 with total page 557 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sea urchins are a major component of the world ocean. They are important ecologically and often greatly affect marine communities. They have an excellent fossil record and consequently are of interest to paleontologists. Research has increased in recent years stimulated first by a recognition of their ecological importance and then because of their economic importance. Scientists around the world are actively investigating their potential for aquaculture. This book is designed to provide a broad understanding of the biology and ecology of sea urchins. Synthetic chapters consider biology of sea urchins as a whole to give a broad view. The topics of these chapters include reproduction, metabolism, endocrinology, larval ecology, growth, digestion, carotenoids, disease and nutrition. Subsequent chapters consider the ecology of individual species that are of major importance ecologically and economically. These include species from Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Europe, North America, South America and Africa. * First comprehensive book devoted to the biology and ecology of sea urchins * NEW chapter on Nutrition of Sea Urchins and Ecology of Diadema * Brand NEW illustrations * Hot NEW topic: Immunology of the Sea Urchin * Chapters written by internationally recognized experts * Each chapter revised and updated from the first edition * Biological chapters include reproduction, endocrinology, carotenoids and disease * Ecological chapters include species of major economic interest for fisheries and aquaculture

Book Sea Urchins

Download or read book Sea Urchins written by John M. Lawrence and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-05-31 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fully revised and expanded edition of Sea Urchins provides a wide-ranging understanding of the biology and ecology of this key component of the world's oceans. Coverage includes reproduction, metabolism, endocrinology, larval ecology, growth, digestion, carotenoids, disease and nutrition. Other chapters consider the ecology of individual species that are of major importance ecologically and economically, including species from Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Europe, North America, South America and Africa. In addition, six new contributions in areas such as immunology, digestive systems and community ecology inform readers on key recent developments and insights from the literature.Sea urchins are ecologically important and often greatly affect marine communities. Because they have an excellent fossil record, they are also of interest to paleontologists. Research on sea urchins has increased in recent years, stimulated first by recognition of their ecological importance and subsequently their economic importance. Scientists around the world are actively investigating their potential for aquaculture and fisheries, and their value as model systems for investigations in developmental biology continues to increase. Continues the series "Developments in Aquaculture and Fisheries Science" with a newly revised volume Collects and synthesizes the state of knowledge of sea urchin biology and ecology Expanded from previous edition to include non-edible species, providing the needed basis for broader evolutionary understanding of sea urchins

Book excerpt: "In the early 1990s, a sea urchin research area was established near Tofino, BC, Canada, to conduct research on sea urchin populations. This report focuses on two studies between 1994 and 2012. The first study investigated the impacts of harvesting Red Sea Urchins (RSU; Mesocentrotus franciscanus) and the second study describes trends of RSU, Green Sea Urchin (GSU; Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis), and Purple Sea Urchin (PSU; S. purpuratus) populations over an eighteen year timespan. Experimental harvesting had minimal short (
