Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1934, Joseph Stalin enacted sodomy laws, unleashing a wave of brutal detentions of homosexual men in large Soviet cities. Rustam Alexander recounts the compelling stories of people whose lives were directly affected by those laws, including a naïve Scottish journalist based in Moscow who dared to write to Stalin in an attempt to save his lover from prosecution, and a homosexual theatre student who came to Moscow in pursuit of a career amid Stalin’s harsh repressions and mass arrests. We also meet a fearless doctor in Siberia who provided medical treatment for gay men at his own peril, and a much-loved Soviet singer who hid his homosexuality from the secret police. Each vignette helps paint the hitherto unknown picture of how Soviet oppression of gay people originated and was perpetuated from Stalin’s rule until the demise of the USSR. This book comes at a time when homophobia is again rearing its ugly head under Putin’s rule.

Book The Generic Closet

    Book Details:
  • Author : Alfred L. Martin
  • Publisher : Indiana University Press
  • Release : 2021-04-06
  • ISBN : 0253054621
  • Pages : 223 pages

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even after a rise in gay and Black representation and production on TV in the 1990s, the sitcom became a "generic closet," restricting Black gay characters with narrative tropes. Drawing from 20 interviews with credited episode writers, key show-runners, and Black gay men, The Generic Closet situates Black-cast sitcoms as a unique genre that uses Black gay characters in service of the series' heterosexual main cast. Alfred L. Martin, Jr., argues that the Black community is considered to be antigay due to misrepresentation by shows that aired during the family viewing hour and that were written for the imagined, "traditional" Black family. Martin considers audience reception, industrial production practices, and authorship to unpack the claim that Black gay characters are written into Black-cast sitcoms such as Moesha, Good News, and Let's Stay Together in order to closet Black gayness. By exploring how systems of power produce ideologies about Black gayness, The Generic Closet deconstructs the concept of a monolithic Black audience and investigates whether this generic closet still exists.

Book Dream Closet

Literary Nonfiction. Editor Matthew Burgess, a poet, children's book author, and magical thinker, has brought together 50 prominent writers and visual artists to respond to the topic of childhood spaces. These small spaces may be sites of solitary reverie, of privacy, of escape, of aesthetic or erotic self-discovery, of queer self- identification, of reading, of making; with each contributor interpreting the topic in their own way. "The recurring figure of the child in the small space may suggest a lost union with the maternal body or some dim memory of the primordial cave; however, for the autobiographer recollecting the past, it is the place where the artist is born. Within the enclosure, the child discovers a capacity for daydreaming, storytelling or imaginative play, and it is the revelation of this creative agency that makes it a formative scene in the development of the artist." Matthew Burgess, from the Introduction Contributors are: Ron Padgett, Brett Bell, Michael Cunningham, Melissa Febos, Cedar Sigo, Christine Hamm, Aram Jibilian, Emily Moore, Sheila Maldonado, Joanna Fuhrman, Christina Olivares, Jason Zuzga, Wayne Koestenbaum, Eileen Myles, Ian Hatcher, Ryan Skrabalak, Thomas Devaney, Mary Lum, Melanie Maria Goodreaux, Sarah Dohrmann, Amanda Tomme, Brian Blanchfield, Jennifer Firestone, Joaquin Trujillo, David Hopson, Robert Booras, Betsy Fagin, Lulu Sylbert, Kris Di Giacomo, Sal Randolph, Lara Mimosa Montes, David Trinidad, Matthew Sandager, Jeffery Conway, Margaret Douglas, Julian Talamantez-Brolaski, Ken Corbett, Todd Colby, Luis Jaramillo, Niki Lederer, Helen Phillips, David Molesky, Nancy K. When his mother became President, Alex Claremont-Diaz was promptly cast as the American equivalent of a young royal. Handsome, charismatic, genius—his image is pure millennial-marketing gold for the White House. There's only one problem: Alex has a beef with the actual prince, Henry, across the pond. And when the tabloids get hold of a photo involving an Alex-Henry altercation, U.S./British relations take a turn for the worse. Heads of family, state, and other handlers devise a plan for damage control: staging a truce between the two rivals. What at first begins as a fake, Instragramable friendship grows deeper, and more dangerous, than either Alex or Henry could have imagined. Soon Alex finds himself hurtling into a secret romance with a surprisingly unstuffy Henry that could derail the campaign and upend two nations and begs the question: Can love save the world after all? Where do we find the courage, and the power, to be the people we are meant to be? And how can we learn to let our true colors shine through? Casey McQuiston's Red, White & Royal Blue proves: true love isn't always diplomatic. "I took this with me wherever I went and stole every second I had to read! Book Red Tarot

    Book Details:
  • Author : Christopher Marmolejo
  • Publisher : North Atlantic Books
  • Release : 2024-03-05
  • ISBN : 1623178487
  • Pages : 445 pages

Download or read book Red Tarot written by Christopher Marmolejo and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2024-03-05 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed to be used with any deck, Red Tarot is a radical praxis and decolonized oracle that moves beyond self-help and divination to reclaim tarot for liberation, self-determination, and collective healing. For readers of Postcolonial Astrology and Tarot for Change Red Tarot speaks to anyone othered for their identity or ways of being or thinking—LGBTQIA2S+ and BIPOC folks in particular—presenting the tarot as a radical epistemology that shifts the authority of knowing into the hands of the people themselves. Author Christopher Marmolejo frames literacy as key to liberation, and explores an understanding of tarot as critical literacy. They show how the cards can be read to subvert the dynamics of white supremacist-capitalist-imperialist-patriarchy, weaving historical context and spiritual practice into a comprehensive overview of tarot. Situating tarot imagery within cosmologies outside the Hellenistic frame—Death as interpreted through the lens of Hindu goddess Chhinnamasta, the High Priestess through Aztec goddess Coyolxauhqui—Marmolejo’s Red Tarot is a profound act of native reclamation and liberation. Each card’s interpretation is further bolstered by the teachings of Toni Morrison, bell hooks, Paulo Freire, José Esteban Muñoz, and others, in an offering that integrates intersectional wisdom with the author’s divination practice—and reveals tarot as an essential language for liberation.

Book Regulating homosexuality in Soviet Russia 1956 91

Download or read book Regulating homosexuality in Soviet Russia 1956 91 written by Rustam Alexander and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2021-05-25 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ground-breaking book challenges the widespread view that sex and homosexuality were unmentionable in the USSR. The Khrushchev and Brezhnev eras (1956–82) have remained obscure and unexplored from this perspective. Drawing on previously undiscovered sources, Alexander fills in this critical gap. The book reveals that from 1956 to 1991, doctors, educators, jurists and police officers discussed homosexuality. At the heart of discussions were questions which directly affected the lives of homosexual people in the USSR. Was homosexuality a crime, disease or a normal variant of human sexuality? Should lesbianism be criminalised? Could sex education prevent homosexuality? What role did the GULAG and prisons play in homosexuality across the USSR? These discussions often had practical implications – doctors designed and offered medical treatments for homosexuality in hospitals, and procedures and medications were also used in prisons.
