This book was released on 2022-08-26 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2017 in the subject Engineering - Civil Engineering, Addis Ababa University, course: Road and Transport Planning, language: English, abstract: As many of the developing countries Ethiopian's road network is mostly gravel. It comprises 82.7% of the road network. Road users and residences around these roads highly exposed to the dust generated due to traffic. In the past years so many techniques of dust reduction has been applied, starting from application of water to using chemical adhesives. In this work an alternative option for dust reduction is presented. Sub base materials from Gelan-Insilale-Legedadi DS6 road section and tear off asphalt pavement from Kality-Akaki road were bagged, tagged & transferred to laboratory. In laboratory in order to determine the engineering property ASTM & AASHTO standards were used. Precipitation Data from Ethiopian National Meteorology Agency, traffic count, vehicle classification of federal highway administration and laboratory test results of silt content & particle size multiplier K-value were used for adopting EPA3 dust quantification model & fugitive dust handbook equation. MINI-TAB17& Excel analyses were used to analyze the data. The result shows blending the 70% sub base with 30% RAP the dust emission was reduced by 17%. The method was also found to be both ecological & economical.

Book Performance of Recycled Asphalt Concrete Airport Pavement Surfaces

Download or read book Performance of Recycled Asphalt Concrete Airport Pavement Surfaces written by G. D. Cline and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this research was to make an assessment of the relative performance of recycled versus new asphalt concrete pavement surfaces constructed for airport facilities. To make this assessment, pavement condition index (PCI) surveys and tests on core samples from the hot-mix recycled pavements located on the airports at Needles, California and Valley City, North Dakota were conducted. Both pavements have a condition rating of very good. The survey and test data were compared with those for recycled highway and virgin material Navy airfield pavements. The recycled pavement at Needles is performing as good as those Navy pavements constructed with virgin material. The recycled pavement at Valley City has a higher deterioration rate than the Navy pavements but this could be attributed to the harsh climate found in North Dakota. The results of this study show that hot-mix recycling was successful at these airports but additional studies are required to determine the applicability of Asphalt Concrete (AC) recycling for reconstruction at all airports. Keywords: Recycled concrete, asphalt, pavement surfaces, airport facilities, Navy airfield pavements, hot-mix recycling.

Book Recycling Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement

Download or read book Recycling Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement written by James H. Tanski and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After completing a study of milling and planning flexible pavement, the next logical step was to find a use for the surplus reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP). Recycling RAP is a concept that has garnered significant interest periodically since about 1915, whenever petroleum shortages threatened. In the mid-1970s it again became timely. From 1976 through 1983, three recycling experiments were performed on rural state highways. They were 1) a 100-percent recycled, synthetically rejuvenated top course, 2) a top course recycled untreated as a shoulder base course, and 3) an asphalt-cement rejuvenated top-course material recycled as a 35/65 base course (35-percent recycled, 65-percent virgin material), a 35/65 top course, and a 50/50 top course. In the first two experiments on-site top courses were milled, stockpiled (short-term) and later recycled, and the third material from existing stockpiles was recycled after long-term shortage.

Book The Use of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement in New SUPERPAVE Asphalt Concrete Mixtures

Download or read book The Use of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement in New SUPERPAVE Asphalt Concrete Mixtures written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the research and development of the SUPERPAVE asphalt mixture design and analysis system did address the use of polymer modified asphalt binders in the specification of material performance properties, no recommendations or procedural guidelines were given for the use of recycled materials. The use of recycled asphalt pavements (RAP) in new paving mixtures is not an innovative idea. RAP has been called one of the most recycled materials in the world, and its use in paving mixtures has been shown to have environmental, economic and performance benefits. In this study, four different RAP stockpiles were sampled and the characteristics of each RAP material were investigated in terms of binder content, aggregate gradation and the rheologic characteristics of the reclaimed RAP binder. The reclaimed RAP binders were blended with several different virgin performance graded binders in order to determine how RAP binder concentration affected the stiffness and performance grade of the RAP -- virgin binder blends. Recommendations were made on how to select virgin binder grade andor RAP concentration combinations to fulfill a project's binder grading requirements. The effects of RAP were also investigated in terms mixture design, and recommendations were made with regards to material handling and specimen fabrication procedures. Asphalt concrete mixtures containing RAP were characterized in terms of stiffness and resistance to plastic strain using SUPERPAVE testing methods, and the results of these tests were compared to those of virgin material mixtures. Assuming a simulated pavement cross section and traffic loading, the results of this performance testing were used in performance prediction models to estimate how pavements constructed with RAP would perform compared to those made from 100% virgin materials. The predicted performance of pavements containing up to 40% RAP (by weight) was found to be similar or slightly better than that of virgin material pavements.

Book Recycled Materials in Geotechnical and Pavement Applications

Download or read book Recycled Materials in Geotechnical and Pavement Applications written by Amin Chegenizadeh and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-02-28 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers the application of recycled materials both in pavement and geotechnical engineering. Currently, Australia has faced the fundamental concern of recycling waste plastic. On 1 January 2018, China enforced a prohibition on the importation of waste plastic. China's ban is followed by other countries like India, Indonesia, and Malaysia. The ban caused many corporations to abandon waste collection agreements, and the stockpiling of waste, as there is nowhere to safely deposit this waste. This issue seems, to a great extent, to have placed Australia's recycling industry in a crisis. As a result, local councils will have to find strategic ways of recycling accumulated waste that will become a more significant issue in the coming years. In Australia, apart from economic growth, the road pavement has weakened rapidly as the current pavement unable to withstand this urgent traffic load demand. The adding of polymers to the mixtures improves the stiffness, rutting resistance, and fatigue cracking [1]. However, the application of virgin polymer is costly. Thus, using waste polymer such as waste plastic polymer is an inexpensive substitute. The potential for recycled plastic to improve the performance properties of asphalt mixtures has been demonstrated in many countries the UK, Canada, The Netherlands, and India [2]. Similarly, another application of recycled materials can be in geotechnical infrastructure. This book considers the application of recycled materials both in pavement and geotechnical engineering. Book A Comprehensive Study Towards Increasing the Use of Recycled Materials in Asphalt Pavements

Download or read book A Comprehensive Study Towards Increasing the Use of Recycled Materials in Asphalt Pavements written by Arkan Khudhayer Obaid and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation consists of two parts that are aimed at increasing the use of recycled materials in pavement structures. This first part summarizes the results of a research study that involved the construction of four test sections as part of a pavement resurfacing project to examine the performance of different ground tire rubber (GTR) modified mixes and compare them to that of a conventional polymer modified mix. In the first section (control section), a styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) polymer modified asphalt binder meeting performance grade (PG) 70-22M was used in the surface course mixture. Furthermore, the surface course mixtures used in the other three sections a PG 64-22 asphalt binder modified with 7% cryogenic GTR (CR GTR), a PG 64-22 binder modified with 6% cryogenic GTR and 0.5% anti-settling agent (CR GTR+ ASA), and a PG 64-22 binder modified with 7% ambient GTR (AM GTR). All asphalt mixtures included 20% reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP). Samples of the GTR modified asphalt binders were obtained at the asphalt terminal and asphalt plant and were tested to evaluate the tendency of the different types GTR particles to separate from the modified binder. In addition, samples of the GTR and polymer modified mixes were obtained during construction and were compacted in the laboratory.
