This book was released on 2018-01-04 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of the Family of Pennyman of Ormesby At the beginning of the last century the neighbourhood was solely agricultural. The estate reached to the river Tees, a few miles from its mouth, and one of the farm-tenants had to pay, in the days when rents were paid partly in kind, two salmon fishes to his landlord. Four miles from Ormesby there was, according to Graves' History of Cleve land, published in 1808, a township or chapelry of Middlesbrough, which consists only of four farm houses. Now the iron trade has come. Middlesbrough is its capital, and has a population fast getting on for many of the villages in the district have become towns; the river is murky with smoke and resounds to the c'lang of machinery for miles of its course. Yet the little village of Ormesby has hardly changed. It still nestles among its trees, a pretty, peaceful spot for the busy worker from grimy Middlesbrough to cycle through on a summer's evening. Indeed if it were not for these cyclists and other traffic passing through the village, one might well fancy oneself in the depths of rural England. An afternoon's walk are the Cleveland hills, rising to heights of as much as feet. From some of their summits there are views of unusual diversity, stretching over other hills, over the sea, which is but eight miles from Ormesby, over the course of the Tees fringed with chimneys and furnaces, and over miles of level plain to the west. Book Interpreting Medieval Effigies

Download or read book Interpreting Medieval Effigies written by Brian Gittos and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2019-05-31 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative study examines and analyses the wealth of evidence provided by the monumental effigies of Yorkshire, from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, including some of very high sculptural merit. More than 200 examples survive from the historic county in varying states of preservation. Together, they present a picture of the people able to afford them, at a time when the county was frequently at the forefront of national politics and administration, during the Scottish wars. Many monuments display remarkable realism, depicting people as they themselves wished to be remembered, and are accompanied by a great volume of contemporary sculptural and architectural detail. Stylistic analysis of the effigies themselves has been employed, better to understand how they relate to one another and give a firmer basis for their dating and production patterns. They are considered in relation to the history and material culture of the area at the time they were produced. A more soundly based appreciation of the sculptor's intentions and the aspirations of patrons is sought through close attention to the full extent of the visible evidence afforded by the monuments and their surroundings. The corpus is of sufficient size to permit meaningful analysis to shed light on aspects such as personal aspiration, social networks, patterns of supply and production, piety and wealth. It demonstrates the value of funerary monuments to the wider understanding of medieval society. The text will be accompanied by a comprehensive catalogue, making available a substantial body of research for the first time. The study considers the relationship between the monuments and related sculpture, architecture, painting, glass etc, together with contemporary documentary evidence, where it is available. This material and the underlying methodology are now available to illuminate monuments of the medieval period across the whole country. Its methods and messages extend understanding of all monuments, broadening its potential audience from the purely local to everyone concerned with medieval sculpture and church archaeology.

Book Reading and Writing Recipe Books 1550 1800

Download or read book Reading and Writing Recipe Books 1550 1800 written by Michelle DiMeo and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2013-02-19 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays provides an overview of new scholarship on recipe books, one of the most popular non-fiction printed texts in, and one of the most common forms of manuscript compilation to survive from, the pre-modern era (c.1550-1800). This is the first book to collect together the wide variety of scholarly approaches to pre-modern recipe books written in English, drawing on varying approaches to reveal their culinary, medical, scientific, linguistic, religious and material meanings. Ten scholars from the fields of culinary history, history of medicine and science, divinity, archaeology and material culture, and English literature and linguistics contribute to a vibrant mapping of the aspirations invested in and uses of recipes and recipe books. By exploring areas as various as the knowledge economies of medicine, Anglican feasting and fasting practices, the material culture of the kitchen and table, London publishing and concepts of authorship and the aesthetics of culinary styles, these eleven essays (including a critical introduction to recipe books and their historiography) position recipe texts in the wider culture of the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. They illuminate their importance to both their original compilers and users, and modern scholars and graduate students alike.
