Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of the Borough of Nottingham, Vol. 3: Being a Series of Extracts From the Archives of the Corporation of Nottingham; King Henry VII, to King Henry VIII, 1485-1547 The appearance of the present volume of extracts from the Nottingham Corporation archives calls for little comment, for the reasons that have induced the Council to proceed with this undertaking are given in the prefaces to the preceding volumes. To repeat those reasons would be little more than to reprint the previous prefaces. Although the Corporation of Nottingham may fairly claim that their records are carefully arranged and calendared, it is yet noteworthy that, during the progress of the present volume, the editor has discovered several papers of interest buried amongst some 19th century briefs. Some of these papers are Of great interest. Those that are of earlier date than the present volume are embodied in a supplement, whilst those that relate to the period of this volume are printed in their proper places. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of the Borough of Nottingham, Vol. 7: Being a Series of Extracts From the Archives of the Corporation of Nottingham, 1760-1800 More heartening are the passages that deal with the beginnings of communal water supply, street lighting, and the watch and ward which was to develop into the police force, though not for many years but the lot of the prisoner, felon or debtor, was one of unrelieved gloom and tragedy. Download or read book Records of the Borough of Nottingham Vol 5 written by Nottingham Nottingham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-23 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of the Borough of Nottingham, Vol. 5: Being a Series of Extracts From the Archives of the Corporation of Nottingham; King Charles I. To King William III., 1625-1702 Although the period covered by this volume may not unfairly claim to be one of the most eventful in the annals of our country, it has to be regretfully admitted that a vast proportion of the Nottingham records of the epoch are of a much less interesting character than might, from this consideration, have been anticipated. In mere bulk, indeed, the documents greatly surpass those of any preceding period, but the exceeding dryness of the contents of many of them is but too well calculated to abate the ardour of the sanguine investigator. The residue, however, contain matter that it is hoped may be of some interest for the general reader as well as for the antiquary; and the minutes of the Common Council, in particular, which have been largely drawn upon for the present volume, are valuable for the light they throw upon our local history during the 'great Rebellion' of the seventeenth century. The references to the military operations, the defensive ones especially, in the town and immediate vicinity during the Civil War, are toler ably frequent, and Colonel Hutchinson, a name, it has been rather sarcastically and unkindly observed, dearer to the 'small-souled' antiquarian than that of the Protector, figures somewhat prominently, if not invariably to advantage, in certain pages of the Hall Books, though, on the other hand, the allusions to Cromwell himself are, if Significant enough, much Slighter and less frequent than his superior importance might make desirable, and add little or nothing to our knowledge of his character and career, or of his relations to our town. It is not a little singular that there should be no direct reference. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of the Borough of Nottingham, Vol. 1: Being a Series of Extracts From the Archives of the Corporation of Nottingham; King Henry II. To King Richard II., 1155-1399 The Finance Committee determined, therefore, to print a volume of extracts with translations. In order that the work might be presented to the public with an assurance of its accuracy, the extracts and translations have been revised by the Rev. James Raine, m.a., of York Cathedral, the learned Secretary of the Surtees Society. The first instalment of the work is now presented to the public, and the committee hope that the reception accorded to it will warrant its continuance. Town Clerks are by statute the keepers of the corporate records, subject to the directions of the Council. These records, in many instances, contain matters of more than local importance, which will remain hidden in the archives of our towns, until Councils are convinced of the importance of publishing them. Book Records of the Borough of Nottingham Vol 2

Download or read book Records of the Borough of Nottingham Vol 2 written by Numa Denis Fustel De Coulanges and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-06-24 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of the Borough of Nottingham, Vol. 2: Being a Series of Extracts From the Archives of the Corporation of Nottingham; King Henry IV. To King Richard III. 1399-1485 The original of the view of the Town Hall in 1741 is a pen and ink drawing in the possession of the Corporation of Notting ham, now preserved at the Art Museum, Nottingham Castle. This drawing was clearly intended to be engraved. There is a hole in it on the right hand side over the steps; this is left blank in the plate. The explanations of the letters in this view agree with Deering's account, so far as it goes. It will be noticed that no explanation of f is given. It is clearly, like 'c, ' the ancient gaol for debtors. At the opening 'e' is portrayed a turner in wood. He is using the old pole or 'dead-centre lathe, which was the general form of lathe in use in the last century. It is now almost entirely out of use in this country. In this lathe the piece of wood required to be turned is secured between two centres fixed in two moveable pieces of wood known as 'puppets' or poppets.' The 'puppets' are fastened at the distance from each other required by the size of the work in hand. When the piece of wood to be turned has been fixed between the centres a cord is passed round it twice or thrice. One end of this cord is secured to the treadle of the lathe and the other to the end of a spring-lath affixed to the ceiling. By pressing the treadle a rotary motion is imparted by the cord to the piece of wood that it is desired to turn. When the pressure on the treadle is released the spring-lath causes the piece of wood to revolve in a contrary dirce tion. Hence it is only possible to use the cutting tools half the time. This is the reason this form of lathe has dropped out of use. In the above drawing the spring-lath is clearly shown over the man's head.
