Book The Seventh Regiment a Record

Download or read book The Seventh Regiment a Record written by George Wood and published by . This book was released on 2014-01-29 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 7th Ohio Volunteer Infantry (or 7th OVI) was an infantry regiment formed in northeastern Ohio for service in the Union Army during the American Civil War. It served in the Eastern Theater in a number of campaigns and battles with the Army of Virginia and the Army of the Potomac, and was then transferred to the Western Theater, where it joined the Army of the Cumberland besieged at Chattanooga. It is of the 7th regiment that a war historian wrote, "All in all, considering the number of its battles, its marches, its losses, its conduct in action, it may be safely said that not a single regiment in the United States gained more lasting honor or deserved better of its country than the Seventh Ohio Volunteer Infantry."From the preface:The following pages were written for the purpose of making a permanent record of the facts within the author's knowledge relating to the Seventh Ohio Regiment. The work was undertaken with the belief that the doings and sufferings of the regiment were of sufficient magnitude and importance to entitle it to a separate record. It has been extremely difficult to obtain facts, on account of so large a portion of the members still being in the service. The book is, therefore, written principally from memory. If it serves to perpetuate in the minds of the public the hardships, as well as long and faithful service, of this gallant regiment, then the object of the author is accomplished. Warren, May, 1865.

Book The 36th Infantry United States Colored Troops in the Civil War

Download or read book The 36th Infantry United States Colored Troops in the Civil War written by James K. Bryant, II and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-02 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Civil War, African American war correspondent Thomas Morris Chester was so inspired by the men of the 36th United States Colored Troops that he declared the group to be "a model regiment." Composed primarily of former slaves recruited from Union-occupied areas of eastern North Carolina and southeastern Virginia, the 36th USCT participated in large-scale expeditions to liberate slaves, guarded Confederate prisoners at major POW camps, served in the trenches before Petersburg and Richmond, and stood as one of the first units to enter the abandoned Confederate capital on April 3, 1865. This volume, which includes a complete regimental roster, explores the background of these former slaves and their families, examines their initial recruitment and chronicles their military contributions throughout the war. More than a unit history, the story of the 36th USCT offers a vivid portrait of the challenging transition from slavery to freedom.

Download or read book Honor in Command written by Freeman Sparks Bowley and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This memoir by Freeman Sparks Bowley, a young white officer who served as a lieutenant in a regiment of U.S. Colored Troops in the Union Army, is the work of a superb storyteller who describes how his Civil War experiences transformed him from a callow youth into an honorable man. Describing in detail his relationship with the men in his company, Bowley extols the role of black soldiers and their officers in the Union victory. Bowley's service in the Union Army began when his regiment joined Grant's 1864 Overland Campaign. His courage was tested at the battles of the Wilderness and the Crater. Captured at the Crater, Bowley spent seven months in prison in Columbia, South Carolina. Paroled in March 1865, he rejoined his regiment to serve in the army of the occupation in the coastal regions of North Carolina and was mustered out of military service in December 1865. His memoir is an invaluable record of the fighting capabilities of black soldiers during the Battle of the Crater and the strategies they employed to cope with racism and adapt to military life. It is also a detailed account of the social dynamics of prison life. Editor Keith Wilson's three introductory essays historically position the coming of age narrative as a significant account of race relations in the Union Army and explore Bowley's developing sense of manhood and honor, offering a unique perspective to Civil War scholars and history buffs.
