Book The Battle of the Bismarck Sea

Download or read book The Battle of the Bismarck Sea written by Lex McAulay and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 30 minutes that changed the balance of power in New Guinea - a battle for land forces, fought at sea, won by air. March 1943: the Japanese had thousands of troops available and powerful unchallenged naval units to deliver them to New Guinea - only air power could be brought to bear on the naval force. A convoy of eight ships with eight battle-hardened destroyers as escort formed to deliver 6,000 fresh, experienced, fully equipped troops to New Guinea. Using bad weather as cover, the convoy reached the last stage of its voyage from Rabaul to Lae - but next morning was clear. A US-Australian air strike force flew out as the last hope for the Allies and employed tactics proposed by an Australian officer. The result was disaster for the Japanese and the convoy was destroyed in 30 minutes. Accounts of the battle published at the time and for years afterwards used a repeated wartime propaganda, exaggerations, myths and lies. This is the full and authentic story of the battle from solid Australian, US and Japanese sources. 'Below deck on destroyer Arashio, Sub-Lieutenant Reiji Masuda felt the speeding ship jump several times and felt large shocks through the hull. The lights went out; power supply failed. He called the bridge; no answer. Masuda sent a messenger but could hardly believe what the man said on return - there was no bridge and the bows were on fire. He ran up to see the bridge had been blown away by a direct hit. Gone were the captain and all the officers of the gunnery and torpedo departments, the medical officer, all the Army officers aboard who had been there in preparation for arrival at Lae, and three newspaper men. All that remained was the front window frame and a grisly sight; the blackened body of the navigator impaled on the remains of the window. But with no one at the helm the destroyer was rushing on at full speed. Masuda looked around. All the other ships were burning. The Imperial Japanese Navy had a disaster on its hands.'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As shared by Jonathan D. George, Colonel, USAF with regard to Matthew K. Rodman's, book “A War on Their Own: Bombers over the Southwest Pacific.” “Capt. Matt Rodman's book is an intriguing study of a moment in history when combat airpower played a key role in achieving victory. He expertly recounts how Fifth Air Force quickly developed new tactics and procedures that “saved the day.” The perfection of low-altitude bombing, strafing, and skip bombing made differences that in hindsight are easy to recognize and quantify. Without them the Fifth would have found itself in a longer, costlier fight with an uncertain outcome. However, these new tactics hurt the enemy to the extent that the Allies eventually prevailed. The real value of Captain Rodman's study, however, lies not so much in his excellent retelling of significant developments in airpower as in his pushing the need for us to be flexible, adaptive, opportunistic, and entrepreneurial while safeguarding our core values and capitalizing on our core competencies. He therefore helps us take some of the uncertainty out of the largely unpredictable future by stressing the importance of “effective adaptability.” Obviously, many components determine success—preparation, resources, knowledge, and determination, to name just a few. None of these, however, have nearly the importance as the creative ability to adapt effectively in order to confront the threat and deliver victory. By telling us the story of Fifth Air Force in the Southwest Pacific, Captain Rodman schools us on our need to employ all of our resources creatively, no matter their limitations. Our future battles will be new and different, as will the actions we take, even though they derive from our past successes. In the mid-1980s, experts would have had difficulty forecasting the effectiveness of the precision and near-precision aerial strikes we executed in Iraq just a few years later. In the mid-1990s, almost no one could have envisioned allied and joint ground forces, some riding on horseback, communicating through satellites to a multitude of aircraft that produced effects leading to our triumph in Operation Enduring Freedom. Today we can only venture a guess—and probably not very accurately—at what we will confront in the coming years. But this much is certain: we will face challenges unlike those of the past, and victory will go to the team that can best adapt its resources to stop the enemy. Captain Rodman's great effort convinces us that it is our legacy to maintain and even enhance that ability.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Rocky Boyer’s War, Allen Boyer offers a wry, keen-eyed, and occasionally disgruntled counterpoint history of the hard-fought, brilliant campaign that won World War II in the Southwest Pacific. Based in part on an unauthorized diary kept by the author's father, 1st Lt. Roscoe “Rocky” Boyer, this narrative history offers the reader an account of Allied air commander Gen. George Kenney's "air blitz" offensive as it was lived both in the cockpit and on the ground. During 1944, as Gen. Douglas MacArthur’s forces fought their way from New Guinea to the Philippines, Kenney, discarding pre-war doctrine, planned and ran an “air blitz” offensive. His 5th Air Force drove forward like a tank army, crash-landing in open country, seizing terrain, bulldozing new airfields, winning air control, and moving forward. At airfields on the front line, Rocky kept the radios working for the 71st Tactical Reconnaissance Group, a fighter-bomber unit. Diaries were forbidden, but Rocky kept one—full of casualties, accidents, off-duty shenanigans, and rear-area snafus. He had friends killed when they shot it out with Japanese anti-aircraft gunners, or when their bombers vanished in bad weather. He wrote about wartime camp life at Nadzab, New Guinea, the largest air base in the world, part Scout camp and part frontier boomtown. He knew characters worthy of Catch-22: combat flyers who played contract bridge, military brass who played office politics, black quartermasters, and chaplains who stood up to colonels when a promotion party ended with drunken gunplay and dynamite. This is a narrative of the war as airmen lived it. Rocky’s experience of life on the front line gives from-the-bottom-up detail to the framework of Kenney’s air blitz. The author uses Rocky’s story as a jumping-off point from which to understand the daily life, pranks, mishaps, and casualties, of the men who in 1944 fought their way over the two thousand miles from New Guinea to the Philippines.

Book General Kenney Reports A Personal History of the Pacific War

Download or read book General Kenney Reports A Personal History of the Pacific War written by and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 1997 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General Kenney Reports is a classic account of a combat commander in action. General George Churchill Kenney arrived in the South- west Pacific theater in August 1942 to find that his command, if not in a shambles, was in dire straits. The theater commander, General Douglas MacArthur, had no confidence in his air element. Kenney quickly changed this situation. He organized and energized the Fifth Air Force, bringing in operational commanders like Whitehead and Wurtsmith who knew how to run combat air forces. He fixed the logistical swamp, making supply and maintenance supportive of air operations, and encouraging mavericks such as Pappy Gunn to make new and innovative weapons and to explore new tactics in airpower application. The result was a disaster for the Japanese. Kenney's airmen used air power-particularly heavily armed B-25 Mitchell bombers used as commerce destroyers-to savage Japanese supply lines, destroying numerous ships and effectively isolating Japanese garrisons. The classic example of Kenney in action was the Battle of the Bismarck Sea, which marked the attainment of complete Allied air dominance and supremacy over Japanese naval forces operating around New Guinea. In short, Kenney was a brilliant, innovative airman, who drew on his own extensive flying experiences to inform his decision-making. General Kenney Reports is a book that has withstood the test of time, and which should be on the shelf of every airman.
