This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Record of Experiments Conducted by the Commissioner of Agriculture in the Manufacture of Sugar From Sorghum: At Rio Grande, New Jersey; Kenner, Louisiana; Conway Springs, Douglass, and Sterling, Kansas, 1888 The bill making an appropriation for experiments in the manufacture of sugar did not become a law until the 19th of July, 1888. At that time it was manifestly impossible for the Department to make any arrangements of its own for the conduct of experiments during the present manufacturing season. It was necessary, if any experiments were to be made at all, that they should be arranged for in connection with work already in progress either by individuals, private corporations, or State experiment stations. The following arrangements were therefore made for the experimental work: (I) A continuation of the experimental work at Rio Grande, N.J., under the direction of Mr. H. A. Hnglies. (2)A series of experiments at Kenuer, La., nuder the direction of Prof. V.C. Stubbs. (3) Experimental work at Douglass, Kans., under the direction of the Douglass Sugar Company. (4) Experimental work at Conway Springs, Kans., under the direction of Mr. E.W. Deming. (5) Experiments in the improvement in the varieties of cane at Sterling?, Kans., under the direction of Mr. A. A. Denton. In addition to the above work arrangements were made for analytical researches under my direction at Douglass, Conway Springs and Sterling, Kans. It was deemed unadvisable at the late date mentioned for the Department to suggest any experimental work or assume any control thereof Having been authorized to arrange for such work in a manner which seemed most advantageous the following directions were given. The work at Rio Grande was placed exclusively in charge of Mr. II. A. Hughes, to be conducted in such a manner as he saw fit for the benefit of the industry. The work which Mr. Hughes proposed to do was on a small scale, with the ultimate idea of making it possible for farmers and others to manufacture sugar without the expense of apparatus usually considered necessary for that purpose. The results of Mr. Hughes's work have been reported by him further on in this bulletin, and a discussion of them will be given in connection with his report. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Record of Experiments at Fort Scott, Kansas: In the Manufacture of Sugar From Sorghum and Sugar-Canes, in 1886 The results of the experiments made at Ottawa last year gave encouragement to the friends of the sorghum sugar industry, and led to the undertaking of a new series of experiments at Fort Scott. The Department of Agriculture entered into the following agreement with the Parkinson Sugar Company at Fort Scott: Agreement Between The Commissioner Of Agriculture And The Parkinson Sugar Company Of Fort Scott, Kans. The Commissioner of Agriculture agrees to erect at the works of the Parkinson Sugar Company of Fort Scott, Kaus., one diffusion battery with all its appliances; three cane-cutters, one of which shall have a horizontal cutting disk, with appliances for feeding the cane to the same, and elevators for delivering the chips to the cells. He further agrees to erect one carbonatation apparatus, to consist of a lime-kiln, carbonic-acid pump, four carbonatation tanks, and four filter-presses, with all their connections; also one sulphur apparatus, consisting of two sulphur furnaces, three saturation-tanks, three filter-presses, one air-pump, and all necessary connections. He further agrees to prepare the whole of the above-mentioned machinery for practical work, and to provide all necessary labor and material for a thorough experimental trial of the same, and when this trial is finished to allow the Parkinson Sugar Company the free use of the apparatus for the rest of the manufacturing season of 1 -6, without any charge for rental to the Parkinson Company aforesaid. It is expressly agreed and understood that all machinery furnished by the Department of Agriculture, and all fixtures and appliances therewith connected, shall remain the property of the Department, and the Commissioner reserves the right to make such disposition of all of it after the end of the present manufacturing season as may seem to him best suited to promote the public interest. The Parkinson Sugar Company agree to furnish suitable buildings in which to erect this machinery, to supply steam for driving it and for use in the calorisators of the battery, and to allow the Commissioner of Agriculture as much time as he may issue not exceeding ten days from the commencement of the manufacturing season. for the purpose of making the experimental trials before mentioned; provided that during these experimental trials the Commissioner of Agriculture shall pay for all coal consumed for supplying the steam mentioned above, and for all limestone, coke, sulphur, filtering-cloths, and other materials used in the experiments. The said company also agree to furnish a suitable room for the chemical laboratory to he erected by the Department and used by the Department chemists during the continuance of the manufacturing season.
