Book Historical Abundances of Tanner Crab Chionoecetes Bairdi for Kodiak Chignik South Peninsula and Eastern Aleutian Districts from Standardized Large mesh Trawl Surveys 1988 2021

Download or read book Historical Abundances of Tanner Crab Chionoecetes Bairdi for Kodiak Chignik South Peninsula and Eastern Aleutian Districts from Standardized Large mesh Trawl Surveys 1988 2021 written by Kally Spalinger and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) is updating long-term average abundance indices of mature male Tanner crab Chionoecetes bairdi used to determine regulatory fishery thresholds in the Kodiak, Chignik, South Peninsula, and Eastern Aleutian Districts. Since 1988, trawl survey area-swept abundance estimates have been determined annually, using the same vessel and net configuration. Initial thresholds were established in 1999, when only 11 years of consistent trawl survey estimates were available. To provide for a longer time series, 4 different methods were used to reconstruct historical male abundances from 1973–1998. The trawl survey has been conducted annually since then, adding an additional 23 years of estimates to the survey time series. Trawl survey stations have been added, removed, modified, and in some years a station may not have been sampled due to unforeseen circumstances, leading to total abundance estimates based on different background information. To develop a single source of comparable abundance estimates, stations and station areas used for area-swept estimates have been standardized from 1988–2021. For each district or section standard stations were assigned to a high or low CPUE (number of crab caught per kilometer towed) stratum. Estimated abundance of each stratum was calculated by applying the mean CPUE of sampled stations, weighted by station size, to the overall area of the stratum. Strata abundances were summed by district or section. This allows the entire area of the survey to be considered, even when a station was not sampled. There are currently 34 years of consistent, standardized trawl survey data that contribute to understanding the productivity of these stocks. Annual area-swept abundance estimates of mature male and female Tanner crab abundance show substantial fluctuations of over 10 million crab within a 3-year period. Long-term (1988–2021) average abundance indices of mature males were determined and compared to previous long-term average abundance indices in use through 2022. Of the 12 management units considered, the mature male long-term average increased in 4 management units and decreased in 8. Long-term average abundance indices of mature females were also determined using the standardized 1988–2021 data. However, no comparisons to previous averages were made because the population reconstruction done in 1999 did not consider females.

Book Updated Tanner Crab Harvest Strategies for Kodiak Chignik and South Peninsula Districts

Download or read book Updated Tanner Crab Harvest Strategies for Kodiak Chignik and South Peninsula Districts written by Kally Spalinger and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) recommends updating harvest strategies for the Tanner crab Chionoecetes bairdi fisheries in the Kodiak, Chignik and South Peninsula Districts. Proposed harvest strategies will update minimum regulatory thresholds used to determine fishery openings and use similar framework and rationale to the harvest strategy recently adopted for Bering Sea Tanner crab. The proposed harvest strategies account for fluctuations in both mature male and female abundance and produce guideline harvest levels (GHLs) in line with historical management practices.

Book A Bottom Trawl Survey for Tanner Crab in Prince William Sound 2020

Download or read book A Bottom Trawl Survey for Tanner Crab in Prince William Sound 2020 written by Wyatt J. Rhea-Fournier and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large-mesh bottom trawl survey of Tanner crab Chionoecetes bairdi was conducted in 2020 in the Prince William Sound Area (PWSA; Registration Area E) with the objective of establishing protocols for generating Tanner crab abundance estimates for a newly established survey area. New survey areas in PWSA were developed to assess new commercial fishery districts that were proposed at the 2021 Alaska Board of Fisheries meeting. Proposed fishery districts encompass historical fishing areas and areas fished in the recent commissioner’s permit fishery. Methodology from the historical PWSA trawl survey was applied to develop new trawl stations with the goal of calculating catch per unit effort (CPUE) to estimate abundance of historical legal size and legal-size male Tanner crab in the surveyed area. The 2020 survey produced a CPUE for male Tanner crab that were of the historical legal size of 28.4 crab per nmi2, which was the third lowest observation for any Alaska Department of Fish and Game trawl survey in the PWSA. The estimated abundance of historical legal-size male Tanner crab was 8,214 crab in the survey area, and the estimated abundance for legal-size male Tanner crab was 35,920 crab in the survey area.

Book Addendum to SP21 11 Tanner Crab Commercial Fishery Harvest Strategy in Prince William Sound 2022

Download or read book Addendum to SP21 11 Tanner Crab Commercial Fishery Harvest Strategy in Prince William Sound 2022 written by Wyatt J. Rhea-Fournier and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes the previous, proposed, and amended Prince William Sound Tanner crab Chionoecetes bairdi harvest strategies, defines how minimum abundance thresholds were calculated for new management districts, and describes the bottom trawl surveys that will be used to inform the harvest strategy. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) submitted a proposal to redefine and rename 5 Tanner crab commercial fishery districts in the Prince William Sound Area (PWSA; Registration Area E) that was adopted into regulation at the November/December 2021 Alaska Board of Fisheries (BOF) meeting. ADF&G also submitted a proposal for a new Tanner crab harvest strategy for 3 of the new districts in PWSA following staff recommendations that were published prior to the 2021 BOF meeting (Rhea-Fournier et al. 2021). The proposed harvest strategy was amended during the meeting after discussions among ADF&G staff, BOF members, and fishery stakeholders before being adopted into regulation. The amended harvest strategy includes minimum abundance thresholds to open a fishery in 3 of the 5 new Tanner crab commercial fishery districts and follows the approach in the original Registration Area E Tanner crab harvest strategy adopted at the 2017 BOF meeting that utilizes commercial harvest and ADF&G bottom trawl survey information. Three significant modifications were made to the original ADF&G harvest strategy proposal, including shortening the time series of annual abundance used to develop a proxy for maximum sustainable yield from 1977–2015 to 1982–2015. The size class of crab for the time series of annual abundance was reduced from the historical legal size to the mature size of male Tanner crab. Finally, the stepwise harvest rates were adjusted to mature-size male crab considering the new approach and a maximum harvest rate on legal-size crab was established for 3 of the 5 new Tanner crab commercial fishery districts.
