Compte tenu de la nature cursive et connectee de l'ecriture arabe manuscrite, nous presentons a travers ce travail notre contribution aux recherches sur l'etude de la reconnaissance de l'ecriture manuscrite. La contribution principale de notre travail est la proposition des solutions techniques permettant la realisation d'un systeme de reconnaissance. Pour cela, nous proposons des procedures des pretraitements et de segmentation du mot en des caracteres arabes. Dans ce rapport nous sommes interesses principalement a construire un modele de reseau bayesien dynamique pour la reconnaissance de l'ecriture arabe manuscrite. Ce modele a montre une grande robustesse a la modelisation de l'ecriture cursive. Adapte a la hierarchie du mot arabe bidimensionnel, ce modele est base sur un mariage entre le Modele Markov Cache et le reseau bayesien hierarchique. Cette structure a ete fixee en se basant sur plusieurs parametres."

Retrouver l'ordre du tracé hors-ligne permet de faire de la reconnaissance hors-ligne avec un reconnaisseur en-ligne. Pour cela, un signal en-ligne doit être reconstruit à partir d'une image en retrouvant l'ordre du tracé. L'objectif est de reconstituer un signal enligne cohérent, qui n'est pas forcément celui produit par le scripteur, car une lettre peut être parcourue de plusieurs façons. Cette thèse analyse finement les connaissances sur l'écriture utilisables pour retrouver l'ordre du tracé. Après squelettisation du tracé et modélisation sous forme de graphe, plusieurs parcours sont générés. Le meilleur est sélectionné en combinant plusieurs critères. Des connaissances sur l'écriture, a priori ou apprises à partir de signaux en-ligne, sont utilisées tout au long de la chaîne. Notre méthode a été testée pour reconnaître des lettres isolées et des mots isolés sur un grand vocabulaire. Nous avons mis au point une méthode d'évaluation automatique pour valider la qualité du signal reconstruit. Nous avons étendu notre méthode pour indexer automatiquement des documents d'archives par le patronyme manuscrit dans un contexte omni-scripteur, dans le but d'accélérer les recherches documentaires. La présence d'une majuscule cursive et le fond pré-imprimé pouvant toucher l'écriture sont des difficultées supplémentaires que nous avons cherché à résoudre.

La reconnaissance hors ligne des mots manuscrits cursifs, tels que ceux écrits en arabe, reste toujours un problème ouvert. Les difficultés inhérentes à la reconnaissance sont la normalisation de l'écriture, la segmentation des mots en éléments de base ainsi que la modélisation de ces éléments. Concevoir un système pour la reconnaissance automatique hors ligne des mots manuscrits est l'objectif des travaux de recherche de cette thèse. L'approche proposée est de type analytique, sans segmentation explicite des mots en ses caractères constituants, et est basée sur une modélisation stochastique de type MMC (Modèles de Markov Cachés). La méthode adoptée est à deux étapes : une étape de reconnaissance dans laquelle différents types de caractéristiques sont examinés, et une étape pour la combinaison des classifieurs en post-traitement dans laquelle différentes stratégies de combinaison sont appliquées. Les classifieurs combinés en post-traitement prennent en considération les inclinaisons, les positions erronées des marques diacritiques et les chevauchements pouvant exister dans l'écriture manuscrite. Le système de référence basé sur la méthode proposée a montré de trés bonnes performances à la compétition organisée à ICDAR 05, où des systèmes à l'état de l'art ont été comparés et examinés sur la base de référence IFN/ENIT.

Celle-ci consiste à déchiffrer des mots manuscrits présents dans une image. Nous proposons un système de reconnaissance de mots manuscrits arabes isolés, appartenant à un lexique. Ce reconnaisseur s'appuie sur un System hybride à base de Réseaux de Neurones (RN) et de Modèles de Markov Cachés (MMC) et une segmentation en graphèmes. L'originalité de notre approche tient à la stratégie d'utilisation des signes diacritiques (points et autres signes secondaires associés aux lettres). Nou: avons proposé un nouvel alphabet de corps de lettres qui permet de mieux exploiter les redondances des formes des lettres arabes. Nous avons ains montré que sur l'application considérée (reconnaissance de noms de villes tunisiennes à l'aide de la base publique IFN/ENIT), les signes diacritique n'étaient pas indispensables pour effectuer la tâche de classification. Bien qu'ils ne soient pas indispensables, les signes diacritiques apportent néanmoins une information supplémentaire. Nous avons donc également proposé une technique de reconnaissance des signes diacritiques, ainsi qu'une stratégie de combinaison entre reconnaissance sans diacritiques et reconnaissance avec diacritiques. Cette combinaison permet de réduire signitïcativemenl le taux d'erreur. Les performances obtenues par le systèir proposé sont les meilleures rapportées dans la littérature, selon le protocole expérimental défini par les auteurs de la base de données. Dans les pistes d'améliorations de ce système de reconnaissance en langue arabe, nous avons proposé une stratégie qui repose sur l'utilisation d'automates à états finis pondérés ( WFSM pour Weighted Finite State Machines). Nous avons utilisé ce formalisme avec succès sur une tâche plus simple de reconnaissance de noms de familles français écrits en lettres capitales. Nous avons ainsi pu vérifier que ce formalisme permettait d'inlég facilement des contraintes propres à la langue ou à l'application considérée. L'utilisation de WFSM pour la reconnaissance de l'écriture arabe semr. prometteuse, et fera l'objet de travaux ultérieurs.

Book excerpt: Handwriting recognition is one of the leading applications of pattern recognition and machine learning. Handwriting recognition systems have been used as an imput method of many electronic devices and helps in the automation of many manual tasks. To further open the avenues of expanding its applications, specific improvements need to be made in the recognition capability of the system. Hidden Markov Model (HMM) has been the dominant methods of the recognition in handwriting recognition in offline and online systems. However, the use of Gaussian observation densities in HMM and representational model for word modeling often does not lead to good classification. Hybrid of Neural Network (NN) and HMM later improves word recognition by taking advantage of NN discriminative property and HMM representational capability. However, the use of NN does not optimize recognition capability as the use Empirical Risk minimization (ERM) principle in its training leads to poor generalization. In this thesis, we focus on improving the recognition capability of a cursive online handwritten word recognition system by using an emerging method in machine learning, the support vector machine (SVM). We first evaluated SVM in isolated character recognition environment using IRONOFF and UNIPEN character databases. SVM, by its use of principle of structural risk minimization (SRM) have allowed simultaneous optimization of representational and discriminative capability of the character recognizer. We finally demonstrate the various practical issues in using SVM within a hybrid setting with HMM. In addition, we tested the hydrid system of the IRONOFF word database and obtained satisfactory results.
