Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Work is a source of income, professional satisfaction and social contact. However, work is not always easy to combine with family life and other private activities, especially for parents. Reconciling both demands is an important issue for many citizens in the European Union. This publication looks at various aspects of the issue of reconciliation of work with family life. It features discussions of the data sources used and gives an overview of the differences in the relevant legal arrangements in the Member States. The report starts with a description of the labour market situation, including developments in part-time work, fixed-term contracts and household composition. The following chapters cover working hours with special attention to unpaid family work, childcare and other care services, maternity and parental leave and flexibility in working time arrangements, including atypical working times such as working at night or at the weekend.

Book excerpt: In December 2013, the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) commissioned ÖSB Consulting to carry out a study focusing on policies and the collection of good practices in the field of reconciliation of work, family and private life in EU Member States. The study also included a policy and literature review in the field of reconciliation at EU and Member State level. This policy review consists of two parts. The first part provides an overview of the main developments on the issue in the European Union (political, social and legislative) including relevant EU legislation and documents. The second part is based on the contributions and information gathered by national experts (a list of the country experts of all 28 Member States is included in this publication). The involvement of men in care activities, the labour market participation and economic independence of women, the involvement of social partners in reconciliation matters and the impact of the economic crisis and related austerity measures on reconciliation issues are crosscutting themes of the review.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Family Policy

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Family Policy written by Neil Gilbert and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-02-10 with total page 1089 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook examines contemporary trends and issues in the formation of families over the different stages of the life cycle and how they interact with family-oriented social policies of modern welfare states, mainly in the OECD countries of Western Europe, East Asia and the U.S. Focusing largely on family needs in the early stages of the life course, the conventional package of policies tends to emphasize programs and benefits clustered around measures to support marriage, childbearing, care, the reconciliation of employment and childcare during the preschool years. Drawing on a multidisciplinary group of experts from many countries, this book extends the conventional perspective on family policy by also looking at later phases of the family life course. In taking a life course perspective, this Handbook extends the purview to encompass the three main stages of family life. These are (1) cohabitation, marriage and starting a family; (2) the early years of parenting, care and employment, and (3) the period of transitions and later life: family breakdown and intergenerational supports across the life course.
