Book excerpt: Dag Petersson offers a comprehensive critique of the philosophy that has dominated 200 years of modern thought, politics, economy, and culture. The basic question is this: why does dialectical metaphysics fail to keep what it promises? What is it about dialectics, that makes it fall into irreducibly distinct variations of itself, when all it promises is to synthesize, to reconcile and make whole what is fragmented and alien to itself? An undisciplined creativity intrinsic to completing reason comes to light through analyses of how dialectical systems begin. Every dialectical philosophy must account for its own birth, and it is at this point, when it also articulates its promise of universal synthesis, that the book discovers a desire for light-writing, or photography. Only the most immediate element light can mediate the necessary self-determination of thought at its origin. Light must begin to write. A philosophical critique of dialectics is therefore also a point of departure for a new aesthetic ontology of photography.

Book The Political Dimension of Reconciliation

Download or read book The Political Dimension of Reconciliation written by Ralf K. Wüstenberg and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2009-04-08 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a nation is working through its past, the call for reconciliation is often expressed, as was the case in South Africa after the end of apartheid and in Germany after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Informed by Ralf Wstenberg s long residence in South Africa and his own native Germany, this book investigates the conditions and dynamics associated with political reconciliation. Wstenberg starts from the observation that reconciliation as a central theme in Christian theological teaching is spoken of in both theology and politics. But does it mean the same thing in both contexts? Is there a commonality of meaning for words like guilt and reconciliation in politics and theology? Where and under what conditions is it possible to translate from theological language into political and vice versa? Wstenberg s study promotes a genuine dialogue between religion and politics by carefully analyzing moral discourses in political transitions to democracy.

Book Reconciliation as Politics

  • Author : Kjell-Åke Nordquist
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2017-03-14
  • ISBN : 153260081X
  • Pages : 167 pages

Download or read book Reconciliation as Politics written by Kjell-Åke Nordquist and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-03-14 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is "political reconciliation" a new tool for peace-building and justice--in peace processes and other complex social reconstruction efforts-after dictatorship or civil wars? Or is it just another term for established practices like negotiation, conflict resolution, and cooperation? Reconciliation processes after conflict and war can be very different in form and content. Kjell-Ake Nordquist analyzes the concept of reconciliation from a political perspective and outlines an understanding of its characteristics in a comparison with its closest "conceptual relatives": forgiveness and conflict resolution. In addition, Nordquist specifically addresses the structural dimensions of reconciliation, and formulates an understanding of reconciliation that identifies a specific contribution to the settlement of political conflicts. In this way, political reconciliation has the potential to be an approach that, along with other activities, contributes to more complete and genuine peace processes.

Book Joseph Butler The Analogy of Religion

Download or read book Joseph Butler The Analogy of Religion written by David McNaughton and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-09-02 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joseph Butler's The Analogy of Religion (1736) is an important work in terms of its historical influence and its contemporary relevance. In it, Butler defends Christian belief against many well-known objections: for instance, that the evidence for Christianity is weak; that it is impossible to believe in miracles; that if God existed he would have revealed himself clearly to everyone. The problems Butler discusses are current in contemporary philosophy of religion, but his answers are often ignored, or given short shrift. Butler argues that by examining this world we have reason to believe its Creator is both benevolent and just; that virtue will be rewarded and vice punished. Even if we have doubts, we would be well advised to take Christianity seriously, given what is at stake. The work includes seminal discussions of life after death, personal identity, and the structure of our ethical thought. In addition to extensive notes, David McNaughton's edition includes a detailed synopsis, a selection from the correspondence between Butler and Samuel Clarke, and an oveview of philosophical influences on Butler's thought.
