Download or read book The Philosophy of Husserl written by Burt Hopkins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-01-28 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the founder of phenomenology, Edmund Husserl has been hugely influential in the development of contemporary continental philosophy. In The Philosophy of Husserl, Burt Hopkins shows that the unity of Husserl’s philosophical enterprise is found in the investigation of the origins of cognition, being, meaning, and ultimately philosophy itself. Hopkins challenges the prevailing view that Husserl’s late turn to history is inconsistent with his earlier attempts to establish phenomenology as a pure science and also the view of Heidegger and Derrida, that the limits of transcendental phenomenology are historically driven by ancient Greek philosophy. Part 1 presents Plato’s written and unwritten theories of eidê and Aristotle’s criticism of both. Part 2 traces Husserl’s early investigations into the formation of mathematical and logical concepts and charts the critical necessity that leads from descriptive psychology to transcendentally pure phenomenology. Part 3 investigates the movement of Husserl’s phenomenology of transcendental consciousness to that of monadological intersubjectivity. Part 4 presents the final stage of the development of Husserl’s thought, which situates monadological intersubjectivity within the context of the historical a priori constitutive of all meaning. Part 5 exposes the unwarranted historical presuppositions that guide Heidegger’s fundamental ontological and Derrida’s deconstructive criticisms of Husserl’s transcendental phenomenology. The Philosophy of Husserl will be required reading for all students of phenomenology.

Download or read book The New Old written by Andrew Bland and published by University Professors Press. This book was released on 2020-06-22 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Myron Milford "Mike" Arons (1929-2008) is recognized internationally as one of the founders of humanistic psychology. This volume serves as both a tribute to his memory and a gateway to reflection and scholarship by future generations of humanistic psychologists who did not have the privilege to know Arons. Edited by his mentee, Dr. Andrew Bland, and daughter, Sandrine Arons, The New-Old traces Arons' thought as it evolved over about three decades, from the 1970s to the 2000s. Following Sandrine Arons' preface and Bland's overview of Mike Arons' life and scholarship, 13 of Arons' papers (some of which are rare, out-of-print, or unpublished) are presented thematically in four sections: (a) his inspiration and influences; (b) creativity, consciousness, and culture; (c) humanistic education; and (d) two of Arons' hermeneutic explorations (on the topics of intuition and the nature of self). The book concludes with a discussion about the contemporary implications and applications of Arons' thinking as well as the accuracy of his predictions about the future of both psychology and society. Finally, an annotated bibliography of Arons' complete writings is included as an appendix.
