Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of Rifleman Harris, (Old 95th) With Anecdotes of His Officers and His Comrads The following pages, describing the chequered life of a private soldier, who served during the most glorious period of our military history, speak so plainly for themselves, as scarcely to need any introductory remarks from the editor, further than the assurance of his own sincere conviction of their truth. Such works as the narratives of Rifleman Harris, from the very nature of their details, afford occasionally more graphic sketches of the actual scenes of war, in its stern realities and concomitant circumstances, than the more stately and largely-grouped pictures of the Historian. Nor are these humble records without their moral. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Describing narrow squeaks and terrible deprivations, Harris's unflowery account of fortitude and resilience in Spain still bristles with a freshness and an invigorating spikiness' SCOTLAND ON SUNDAY 'A most vivid record of the war in Spain and Portugal against Napoleon' MAIL ON SUNDAY Benjamin Harris was a young shepherd from Dorset who joined the army in 1802 and later joined the dashing 95th Rifles. His battalion was ordered to Portugal, where he marched under the burning sun, weighed down by his kit and great-coat, plus all the tools and leather he had to carry as the battalion's cobbler - 'the lapstone I took the liberty of flinging to the Devil'. Rifleman Harris was a natural story-teller with a remarkable tale to unfold, and his Recollections have become one of the most popular military books of all time.

Book excerpt: The Recollections of Rifleman Harris is a memoir published in 1848 of the experiences of an enlisted soldier in the 95th Regiment of Foot in the British Army during the Napoleonic Wars. The eponymous soldier was Benjamin Randell Harris, a private who joined the regiment in 1803 and served in many of the early campaigns in the Peninsula War. In the mid-1830s, Harris was working as a cobbler in London when he met an acquaintance, Captain Henry Curling, who asked him to dictate an account of his experiences of army life. This account was then held by Curling until 1848, when he succeeded in getting the manuscript published, preserving one of the very few surviving accounts of military service in this era from a private soldier.

Book The 95th Rifles in America

Download or read book The 95th Rifles in America written by Harry Smith and published by . This book was released on 2010-06 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rifle green to America With Accompanying Histories of the Campaign and Regiment in the Period by Eric Sheppard and William Cope Relations between the British Empire and its former-rebellious-colony in America were understandably strained in the half century following the War of Independence. While the British Army struggled with the Emperor of the French in Spain, open hostility broke out on the new nations border with British Canada. As Britain's war apparently drew to a close in the South of France upon Napoleon's abdication experienced regiments from Wellington's Peninsula Army were detailed to sail across the Atlantic to join the struggle. Among them were elements of the 95th-the famous green-jacketed riflemen. Fortunately for posterity two of those soldiers, Harry Smith and William Surtees, elected to write accounts of their experiences. Leonaur has included these two essential accounts in this volume, together with an account of the doings of the 95th in America and a general overview of the war, to give modern readers an insight into the latter stages of this Napoleonic period war, from a rifleman's perspective, up to and beyond the catastrophic battle before New Orleans that concluded hostilities. Available in soft cover and hard cover with dust jacket.

Book History of the 99th Indiana Infantry

Download or read book History of the 99th Indiana Infantry written by D. R. Lucas and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the 99th Indiana Infantry: Containing a Diary of Marches, Incidents, Biography of Officers and Complete Rolls When the writer resigned his commission in the 99th Indiana Infantry, he had in his possession a diary of the marches and movements Of the Regiment, the Muster-in Rolls, with the fate Of each man, that far through the campaign and the idea suggested itself that it would be Of interest, and useful for reference when they wished to recall the scenes passed through in their military life, that each member Of the regiment should have a Copy; arrangements were made for a continuance of the diary, and an endeavor made to get the particulars of each man's fate; and the present work is the result. The only Object has been to give dates and facts instead Of incidents, which can be remembered with great er ease on account of the circumstances surrounding them. N 0 attention has been paid to the perfection Of the expression Of those facts, only to make them clear: neither was it especially necessary, as the work was not for general circulation, and any faults Of composition will be over' looked by those for whom it was written. I am indebted to Sergeant Major, Harry Brewer, for many favors and facts, and to him my thanks are due for what he has done, as without his aid this work would not be as complete as it is, though far from perfect now. The sketch Of the lives of the Officers is, Of course imperfect, but will be a remembrance Of their deeds. The pen pictures are mine, and are written of them as though dead, that I might not be deemed guilty Of detraction or flattery. It is hard to drawa line Of demarkation in all cases like these, and every man in the Regiment that has faithfully discharged his duty, is entitled to all the honor attached to patriotic sacrifice, and the only reason for giving an especial biography of the Officers, is from their positions in the Regiment they and their characters are more generally known, not that they are men Of more intelligence and bravery, which is not the case. Many of you, comrades, have families, and in future years when your children are grown up, if you are called away, this little record of events will be a legacy that they will highly prize, as a record Of a father's sac rifices in the cause Of human liberty. You will be separated as you are discharged from the service, and I have endeavored to give you such a record of your labors, struggles, disappointments and triumphs in the army, that when, in after years you meet a comrade, you will have some thing to refer to, that will bring fresh to your memories the days Of yore when you went forth together to do or die for your country. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New History of the 99th Indiana Infantry: Containing Official Reports, Anecdotes, Incidents, Biographies and Complete Rolls One hundred and sixty-four, or seventeen per cent. Had been discharged on account of wounds, or disability incurred in the service, many of them to go with halting steps for a few years and then to go in feebleness down to the grave. Twenty-seven of them by their longings for home and the bad advice of friends there, gave up their manhood and deserted the ranks. Their names will not appear in this history, for it is enough that they are preserved in the archives of the nation. They were nearly all the first winter in West Tennessee and each company had one or more, five being the greatest number from any company. Seventy-one of the number that were mustered out with the regiment bore the scars of the wounds they received in battle, and those that survive still have these mementoes of their valor and devotion.
