Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of the Log School House Period: And Sketches of Life and Customs in Pioneer Days So far as the author's observation extends, our bibliography presents no one book wherein the subjects which furnish the headings for the several chapters in this little volume, are treated. Painfully aware of this fact, and of the hesitancy on the part of writers of known ability to attempt the work, he has devoted much of the time for the past year to the preparation of the matter, and in arranging for the proper illustrations of this book, in the hope that it may atone in some degree for this neglect. He makes no claim to literary excellence, but in his own plain way has treated the various subjects in language which, he trusts may at least be understood, and flatters himself that in so doing, he has rescued from an early oblivion some of the customs, practices, implements and utensils, prevalent in pioneer days, and, incidentally forestalled the work of the archaeologist in exploring old attics, and explaining to future generations the uses and purposes to which the strange things therein found were devoted. More than any one else possibly can, he regrets that he has been unable to bring to the work more ability, and a better style in composition: he hopes, however, that such lack will be considered by a charitable public, as fully compensated by the aptitude and ability displayed by Mr. R. J. Tucker, in the illustrations. It is rare indeed to find one in whom such artistic ability and great fondness for the things which were peculiar to the olden times, are so happily united. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Journey Reminiscences of Pioneer Days The author is one of those who "crossed the plains," an achievement which at the time did not seem great in its inception nor mighty in its accomplishment, so crowded with pleasurable incidents was the journey and so full of the inspiration aroused by the necessities and ambitions of the undertaking were all. As the years have gone, however, and time has not only cast a sort of glamour over the event, but has given men an opportunity to reflect thoughtfully and in calmness and intelligence, that same journey assumes greatness in our eyes, both in inception and in its achievement. It finds a prominent place in the history of the nation, and will ever stand forth among great events. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of Pioneer Days in Wood County and the Maumee Valley: A Pioneer Scrap Book The purpose of this book is to preserve to the people of Wood county and the Maumee Valley some of the historic facts and interesting incidents of its early days and to present them in an entertaining and readable form. The plan of making it scrap-book-fashion originated with my father and an outline of the work had been arranged by him and left - an unfinished task. The further preparation and compilation was then entrusted to the trained hand of Mr. F. J. Oblinger, who has, with pains-taking care, from a mass of manuscript, notes, clippings and other material, condensed the gleanings of a life time into these pages. I am also under obligations to Mr. John E. Gunckel, of Toledo, for his kindness in permitting the use of a number of cuts from his "Early History of the Maumee Valley." The publication I have undertaken, personally, as a memorial to my father, from whose pen most of the articles have come. Some are now in print for the first time, while others have appeared during his years of active newspaper work. My father's labors in this direction were purely out of love for the work. All history appealed to him, but the early struggles of Wood county pioneers was a chapter so replete with tragic interest, so tinged with romance, so filled with human endeavor and its achievement that it called forth his highest admiration. It seemed fitting, therefore, that the final effort of his life should have been a record of these events and with this thought in mind and the grateful encouragement and friendly interest extended by his old associates, both personally and as members of the Pioneer and Historical societies, I have ventured to complete the work. Book Spudding in

Download or read book Spudding in written by William Rintoul and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of petroleum in California deserves to be better known, for oil has been as surely the significant California mineral in the 20th century as the more glamorous gold was in its predecessor. In this coal-short state, oil has long fueled our industry, public utilities and transport. It has contributed to our agriculture by powering distillate-driven pumps for irrigation and in numerous other ways. Above all, through its most valuable refined product, gasoline, it has helped make the automobile our massively preferred form of personal transportation, affecting our patterns of population growth and, in recent years, making us acutely conscious of the hazards of air pollution. Spudding In can whet popular interest in oil history. Its handsome format, superb illustrations and easy reading make it fit for a coffee table, but it is by no means lacking in substance. The author, a longtime, respected oil journalist, has drawn heavily on taped interviews with thirty-five prominent oil figures of early in this century systematically gathered since 1963 by the Petroleum Production Pioneers of California and has supplemented this rich source with a variety of printed materials and his own wide knowledge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cathlamet on the Columbia: Recollections of the Indian People and Short Stories of Early Pioneer Days in the Valley of the Lower Columbia River Modestly does the author of these tales refer to them as perhaps of little worth; but he has made a work which though small in com pass, shines with a quality that endures. It is an unusual book. It possesses savor and sincerity, exactness and charm. Pioneer incidents are told with the warmth that comes of long saturated experience. The Indian scenes are more somber, as befits the race, but related in mellow tones that make the almost forgotten aboriginal live. They embody rare facts of value to the historian and ethnologist. Over all broods the back ground of river and fir. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Pioneer Recollections

Download or read book Pioneer Recollections written by Daniel S. Mevis and published by . This book was released on 1911 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contains the author's recollections of the early settlement and development of Lansing, Michigan, particularly during the late 1840s and early 1850s. Mevis's family moved there (1847) as it was being laid out as the future state capitol. Much of Pioneer Recollections is devoted to tales and anecdotes about pioneer life in Lansing and elsewhere. As a teenager, Mevis was a companion of members of the Okemos tribe of Indians, and he describes their mode of hunting deer and a small, dug-out canoe that the chief gave him. In addition to farm chores, serving as town crier, and working as a "printer's devil" at the local newspaper, Mevis sold refreshments at a tent show (McFarland's Pavilion Theater) and engaged in many entrepreneurial activities, which leads him to reminisce about Lansing's first businessmen. He also enjoyed sleigh rides, dancing parties, corn husking, logging bees, holiday celebrations, and many outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, searching for snakes, making maple sugar, and gathering greens, fruits, and wildflowers. Mevis includes a list of Lansing's early inhabitants, with photographs of some of the men.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of a Pioneer I was born in Bartow County, Georgia, on the 22md day of January, 1829. Sometime during my in fancy, and at a period too early to be remembered, my father and his family moved to East Tennessee, where we lived until I was ten years old. About this time re ports concerning the Platte Purchase and its splendid farming land began to reach us. I do not now recall the exact channel through which these reports came, but I think some of our relatives had gone there and had written back urging us to come. My father final ly yielded and in the spring of 1839 sold his Tennessee farm and prepared for the long journey overland. I was old enough at the time to take some note of what passed, and I remember that my father received four thousand dollars for his land in Indiana shin plas ters. I recall also the preparations that were made for the journey - the outfitting of the wagons, gathering the stock together, and most important of all, the part assigned to me. I was provided with a pony, saddle and bridle and given charge of a herd of loose cattle and horses. We had a rude camp outfit and car ried along with us all the household plunder with which we expected to start life in the new country. As may be well imagined, there was not a great deal of it, although the family was large. In those days the peo ple had to be satisfied with the barest necessities. Some idea of the extent of this part of my father's worldly property may be given by saying that the entire outfit, including camp equipment, was loaded into two wagons. I shall never forget the morning we started. Everything had been loaded the day before, ex cept the articles necessary to the sojourn over night. We were up bright and early, had breakfast in little better than camp style, and were off before sun up. My father, mother, and the younger children took the first wagon, and one of my brothers and my sisters the second. I was upon my pony and in my glory. The wagons moved forward and I rounded up the cattle and horses and forced them along after the wagons. I was too young to feel any tender sentiment toward the old home or to appreciate the fact that I was leav ing it forever, but I remember that my father and mother often looked back, and as we passed over the hill out of sight, I saw them turn and wave a long farewell. Many times since I have thought of that scene and have learned to know full well its meaning to my father and mother.
