Book Rambling Recollections an Autobiography

Download or read book Rambling Recollections an Autobiography written by A. D. Rockwell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rambling Recollections an Autobiography The sun nears the western sky, and sitting by my peaceful fireside, memories come trooping on to cheer and comfort me. One has said "in the circle of life the nearer we are to the end, the closer are we to the beginning," and so in the following pages I have lingered long, perhaps too long, over my boyhood days. They have ever brought pleasant thoughts to me - my only apology for their prominence in these recollections. Written originally for the perusal of my children only, this story of my life has unwittingly crept between these two covers. If any other readers can find a grain of pleasure herein in whiling away a few hours, I shall be doubly repaid for my efforts. Book Among Australia S Pioneers

Download or read book Among Australia S Pioneers written by Margaret Slocomb and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2014-07-25 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The almost simultaneous abolition of the slave trade and the cessation of convict transportation to the colony of New South Walesnow eastern mainland Australiastarted a quest by the squatter pastoralists for alternative sources of cheap labor for their vast sheep runs. Over a period of five years, beginning from 1848, around three thousand Chinese men and boys from Fujian Province were recruited under conditions little different from the slave trade. In Among Australias Pioneers, author Margaret Slocomb focuses on the experiences of approximately two hundred of these Chinese laborers between 1848 and 1853. Her research examines their working conditions during the five-year indenture period and also traces the lives of several of the men who, at the end of their contract, chose to remain in those districts, which, by then, had become familiar to them. Perhaps they regarded themselves as pioneer immigrants. Slocomb recounts the experiences of these men on the dangerous northern frontier of European settlement. While some succumbed to the despair and loneliness of a shepherds life, others survived their indenture and went on to play an important role in the emerging society of the new colony of Queensland. They may certainly be counted among the nations pioneers.

This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rambling Recollections, Vol. 1 of 2 The title Of this book 'conveys my meaning clearly. It is not an autobiography, nor even a continuous narrative. It is founded on no diary or record. Whatever the contents of the book - whether narrative or anecdotic - they are given just as they come unbidden into my memory, which is not a bad one, though possibly not so exact as I could wish. I have not attempted to be strictly accurate as to chronological order, though the events described harmonise with the period in connection with which they appear. By anticipa tion, therefore, I fully recognise the defects arising from want Of premeditation. Any apologies that may be required of me, I make at once. I am prepared to accept criticism without remonstrance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The chief object of this communication was, to desire me to visit a cousin of ours, a retired physician. He lived in the vicinity of town; was wealthy, childless, a widower, and a man of no expense--and consequently the likeliest person, on this distressing emergency, to contribute the required loan. Nor was there any indelicacy on my father's part, in applying in his hour of need, to this his opulent kinsman. He had been an orphan--during his struggles to advance himself in life, my parent's roof had been his shelter--and for three years my father's purse had borne the expenses of college terms, and supplied the means of starting successfully in the metropolis. I sent for a post-chaise--left a billet from the dowager unopened--drove six miles from town--found out my relative--told him my business--begged the required loan--and offered to join my father, (a tenant for life, ) in any security he would demand. He listened coldly, replied, that through life he had neither lent nor borrowed--and remarked that he could not be expected now to deviate from a general rule. He lied, the scoundrel! But for my father's assistance he never could have obtained a diploma. I left him, with a look of scorn and a smothered curse. I reached my lodgings before two, and when I had discharged the post-boy, was owner of a "splendid shilling." I strode through the room like a maniac. It was a rascally world after all. My kind and noblehearted father, for lack of a miserable thousand, must sink; and he, the scoundrel, whose fortunes he had founded, had refused that paltry sum. I knew my parent's temper: his proud heart would break. What was to be done? I flung myself in bitter agony upon the sofa, as Mrs. Green's maid came a second time, to...
