Book Recollections of a Ministry of Forty Years Classic Reprint

Download or read book Recollections of a Ministry of Forty Years Classic Reprint written by Caleb Davis Bradlee and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of a Ministry of Forty Years At the request of some of the members of the Boston Association of Ministers I have agreed to prepare a paper upon "Recollections of a Ministry of Forty Years," from Dec. 11, 1854, to Dec. 11, 1894. I have been asked to give a resume of my ministry, and to speak of the men whom I have met, and of the churches and their work when I began my work, and of the hopes of to-day, when everything seems so vastly different from what it did in 1854. The subject is a large one and it would hardly be possible to condense forty years into forty minutes; and whatever may be said on the subjects suggested must of necessity be fragmentary, conversational, and perhaps somewhat too personal. But, as your moderator and others have ordered me to speak, like a good soldier I have only to obey. My appearance before you this afternoon reminds me very vividly of a meeting of the Boston Association of Ministers that was held on June 12, Monday, 1854, over forty years ago, at the house of the late Rev. Dr. George E.Ellis, in Charlestown, Mass., when a very young man, twenty-three years old, appeared before the Association according to the. custom of those days, that he might receive his license to preach. The subject that was presented by the candidate for that afternoon was "The Death of Christ, and its Effect upon the World." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections and Observations During a Ministry in the North Carolina Conference, Methodist Episcopal Church, South, of Forty-Three Years I have seen wonderful changes during my life in this Conference. When I entered the ministry, there was not a fine church building in the Conference. There were a few plain brick churches. Edenton Street Church, Raleigh, had a plain brick church; Front Street Church, Wilmington, Tryon Street Church, Charlotte, and a few others, were modest brick churches. All the rest were plain wooden structures, and the Methodists were a plain, pious people. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Ministers: Or Forty Years' Experience in the African Methodist Episcopal Church Accepting either of these definitions, what a rare book of history is the one for which these brief words are to serve as an Introduction. Nor in making this declaration are we forgetful that the definitions above are supposed to recognize the well-known distinction between iogmp/zy and history, biography being the record of an individual's life. But My Recollec tions is in no sense the record of an individual's life, and therefore cannot be a biography, or rather an autobiography. Survey the production as we will, we still affirm it to be a rare book of history; a written statement of what is known an account of that which is known to exist. And it is pre-eminently merito rious, from the fact that the good Bishop knows what he writes. No one enjoying his acquaintance can for. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fifty Years' Recollections, Literary and Personal, With Observations on Men and Things, Vol. 1 of 3 Nature remains the same, whatever be the changes in shape of the foolscap man may wear. The site of my birth-place is on the side of a well-wooded creek. There the climate permits the myrtle and japonica to luxuriate in the soft and balmy air; while, at no great distance, an orange-tree has blossomed in an open garden for many years unsheltered. A sweetly sequestered church, of ancient construction, its burial-ground over shadowed by venerable trees, stands hard by, on the verge of an arm of the sea, the whole exhibiting a scene of tranquil beauty, so sweet that the dead seem to invite the stranger from the tumult of a distempered existence to an unwonted serenity of repose. Book Reminiscences and Incidents of a Long Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book Reminiscences and Incidents of a Long Life Classic Reprint written by Thos; C. Teasdale and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-22 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences and Incidents of a Long Life This work is given to the public at the earnest request of many of our most prominent ministers of the gospel, and a great multitude of lay members, amongst whom I have labored, either as pastor, or evangelist. Its preparation was commenced many years ago. A large portion of it was written some time before Rev. Dr. Jeter began the publication of his "Recollections of a Long Life," in the Religious Herald, of Richmond, Va. So that, although there may be some resemblance between his "Recollections," and my "Reminiscences," it must not be supposed that my book is a mere imitation of his. Its publication has been delayed to the present time, so that it might contain as nearly all of my life and labors as possible. I am now within a few weeks of seventy-nine years of age. I have been preaching the gospel fifty-nine years. And it is not likely that I will be able to perform much more public ministerial work. The incidents related in the book are mostly those that have fallen under my own observation. I trust they will be interesting and profitable to all who may read them. God has honored me greatly in my ministry; and many thousands have been led to Jesus for salvation, through my humble instrumentality. To his adorable name be all the glory! Amen.
