Download or read book Recollections and Impressions Classic Reprint written by E. M. Sellar and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections and Impressions In giving these Recollections and Impressions to the public, I feel some sort of explanation is due, - and the explanation is, that they were written at long intervals during the last four or five years, entirely for my grandchildren, and are therefore of a more domestic character than if a larger audience had been anticipated. I have never kept a diary, and am conscious that what I have written is often very desultory, and at all times it is difficult to keep reminiscences from being a dry catalogue of names. Had I even suppressed the personal note, the sketches of well-known people who came into our life might appear too like detached portraits, lacking a frame. Such as they are, I shall feel grateful and pleased if my readers find some little interest in any of them. Download or read book Recollections and Impressions 1822 1890 Classic Reprint written by Octavius Brooks Frothingham and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections and Impressions, 1822-1890 My father was, as I have said elsewhere, a clergyman in Boston, Massachusetts, a Unitarian minister to the First Church, standing in a long line of men, of whom the earliest was severely orthodox, while he abhorred orthodoxy. Yet he was ordained without hesitation, was more than acceptable to the best minds through a service of thirty-five years, and continued more and more unorthodox to the end; so gradually and insensibly did the Puritan tenets disappear one by one until the shadow of them only remained. We are assured that by 1780 nearly all the congregational pulpits were filled by Arminians. In 1815, the year of my father's ordination, they were well domesticated in New England, Calvinism having lost its hold on the minds of thinking people, and none but keen-eyed watchers on the tower seeing what course opinion was taking.
