Book excerpt: This study found significant differences between the groups (LI vs. Typical), with the children without LI recognizing each emotion more accurately than those with LI. There was also a significant main effect found for gender and emotion. These differences were qualified by a significant interaction between gender and emotion, which indicated that some emotions were identified by females more correctly than males. Specifically, females identified the emotion disgust more accurately than males. This may provide support for the idea that children with LI may have difficulties with emotion understanding, of which facial expression recognition is a specific and basic aspect; this deficit could negatively impact their social interactions.

Book excerpt: Asperger's disorder (AD) is a pervasive, life-long condition characterized by social dysfunction. Deficits are seen in the ability to initiate and sustain reciprocal social interactions, which has been related to inappropriate use or lack of understanding of nonverbal communication. Facial expression has been described as the most important type of nonverbal communication. There have been few studies, however, related to difficulties with the use of facial expression in persons with AD despite clinical accounts suggesting problems with encoding of facial expression. The present study looked at children's ability to encode six basic emotions: happiness, sadness, anger, fear, surprise, and disgust. First, comparisons were made between 42 children with AD and 42 typically developing children matched on age, gender, and ethnicity. Results show that children with AD were significant less able to accurately encode the emotion of sadness than typical peers. Additionally, the expressions of children with AD appeared significantly more "odd." The second part of the study examined the effects of a social skills intervention for children with AD, Connections, on the ability to encode facial expression of emotion. The facial expressions of 54 children with AD were judged pre- and post-intervention. A significant improvement was noted in the children's accuracy in encoding the emotion of sadness. Last, implications and limitations of the study, as well as directions for future research, are discussed.

And change certainly will be the buzzword in the foreseeable future. The rapid growth of information and communication technology as well as progress in educational, psychological, and allied research fields have many scholars questioning aspects of traditional school concepts. For example, should the classroom be "flipped" so that students receive instruction online at home and do "homework" in school? At the same time, inclusive education has changed the traditional landscape of special education and thus of deaf education in many if not all countries, and yet deaf children continued to lag significantly behind hearing peers in academic achievement. As a consequence of technological innovations (e.g., digital hearing aids and early bilateral cochlear implants), the needs of many deaf learners have changed considerably. Parents and professionals, however, are just now coming to recognize that there are cognitive, experiential, and social-emotional differences between deaf and hearing students likely to affect academic outcomes. Understanding such differences and determining ways in which to accommodate them through global cooperation must become a top priority in educating deaf learners. Book excerpt: Children diagnosed with Language Impairment (LI) often have difficulty with aspects of social communication. This thesis evaluates the effects of a social communication intervention focused on facilitating the correct production of emotion words in four elementary school-aged children with LI. Researchers monitored changes from pretreatment baseline data, through the intervention, and ended with posttreatment follow-up data for the emotions happiness, surprise, fear, anger, sadness, and disgust. Based on baseline measures, emotion categories in which the child showed limited proficiency were targeted for the 20 intervention sessions. The emotions targeted were different for each child. Each intervention session contained a combination of storybook therapeutic strategies such as story enactment, story sharing, and modeling by the clinician to help increase the child’s emotion understanding. The child participated in emotion recognition and emotion inferencing tasks. The data for each participant was analyzed individually and formatted into figures. Data analyzation was performed using percentage of non-overlapping data (PND) which provided insight into how successful the intervention was for each of the targeted emotions. The results of each child’s emotion based words were varied, some participants making good progress and others showing little or no gains. These results suggest that the intervention was effective for some of the children and should continued to be refined.

As well as being an integral part of language, interjections play an important role in communication. Deficits in social communication and social interaction form part of the triad of impairments in Autism Spectrum Disorder, and Language Disorder impacts upon the communicative abilities of a person. This study is the first to investigate the use of interjections by children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Developmental Language Disorder, and a typically developing cohort. To date, the study of interjections is extremely limited in scope as research within this area has been overlooked by linguists. This book strives to address this issue, and a novel approach to eliciting interjections through storytelling and spontaneous play is introduced. The preliminary study is discussed at length along with its findings, but there are also a range of topics covered within the book including neurology, emotions, theory of mind, language acquisition, and interjectional usage.
