Download or read book The Fluvial System written by Stanley Alfred Schumm and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1977, this is a classic of the geomorphology literature. Erosion, transport, and deposition of sediment within river catchments concern a wide range of earth scientists and profoundly affect land management. Upland soil removal engages the attention of soil conservationists, hydraulic engineers deal with fluvial sediment transport and river channel morphology, and patterns of sediment deposition in riverine and coastal lowlands affect navigability, the habitability of valley floors and the distribution of groundwater and minerals. The author argues persuasively that fluvial geomorphology, sedimentology and stratigraphy provide insights into each of these components of the river basin. "This volume, with its generous illustrations will be welcomed by earth scientists generally. It fills an important niche in the fluvial literature and its lucid style and clear exposition place it well within the range of students in any form of higher education." Nature "As a synthesis of the fluvial system and its effects on the landscape, as a primer in fluvial geomorphology and sedimentation for the planner, engineer and economic geologist, and as a stimulator of geomorphic thought, this book is most valuable." American Scientist Dr. Schumm is an internationally recognized geomorphologist who has published 150 papers and authored and edited 11 books. His primary experience has been in the investigation and analysis of fluvial systems. He has applied the concepts of geomorphology, fluvial hydraulics and geology to analyze alluvial river form and shape, sediment transport and effects of man-induced changes on river systems throughout the United States and in numerous foreign countries. He has also been involved in the interpretation of lunar and Martian landforms. Dr. Schumm is a past Chairman of the Geopmorphology Division of the Geological Society of America, has served on technical and committees of the National Research Council, the Geological Society of America, the American Geophysical Union, International Geographic Union, the National Science Foundation and NASA. He has performed research, lectured and advised government agencies around the world.

The first and second editions both won universal praise and became classic works in sedimentology. Since the publication of the last edition, the study of sedimentary environments and facies has made great strides, with major advances in facies modelling, sequence stratigraphy and basin modelling. The 3rd edition of this classic text will likely set the benchmark even higher, and needless to say, will continue being the textbook of choice for sedimentology students. The latest edition of a classic text. Incorporates all the latest advances in dynamic stratigraphy. Will remain the textbook of choice for upper level undergraduate and graduate students in sedimentology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A book of research articles focused on fluvial processes The book is divided into a several main sections for ease of reference: Hydrodynamics and Bedforms; Present?Day Channel Processes; Facies Models; and Economic Aspects. Geographical and geological investigations are also described in Modern and Ancient Fluvial Systems. Research articles include the topics of bedforms and structures near the transition between dunes and a plane bed, as well as the vertical and lateral relationships between five major delta distributary channels. Research papers are also shared within the publication, such as a review of the major developments in the study of channel changes during this century. The individual chapter authors take readers from the Colorado Plateau of the Western United States to the Witwatersrand of South Africa.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The innovation and refinement of the techniques and concepts ofsequence stratigraphy has been one of the most exciting andprofound developments in geology over the past thirty years.Seismic stratigraphy has now become one of the standard tools ofthe geoscientist, and there is a pressing need for an introductorytext on sequence stratigraphy. This new book sets out to define andexplain the concepts, principles and applications of thisremarkably influential approach to the study of sedimentary strata. The authors take a rigorous objective stance in evaluating thetechniques and interpretation of sequence stratigraphy - basing thetext on an internal training course developed by British Petroleum(BP). A new text on this increasingly important field A practical guide based on the experience of practisingsequence stratigraphers Based on a highly successful BP training course

Book Ancient Sedimentary Environments and Their Sub surface Diagnosis

Download or read book Ancient Sedimentary Environments and Their Sub surface Diagnosis written by Richard C. Selley and published by Springer. This book was released on 1985 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: has done more to advance and apply sedimentology than any other branch of industrial geology. Critical readers will notice that metres, feet, kilometres, and miles are used indiscriminately throughout the book. Since the oil industry refuses to go metric, the student must quickly learn to correlate the two systems. A conversion scale is included in the first figure. January, 1970 RICHARD C. SELLEY Tripoli, Libya Preface to the second edition I began to write the first edition of this book after spending nearly ten years at university studying and teaching how to diagnose the depositional environments of sedimentary rocks where they crop out at the earth's surface. The first edition was written during the first three months of my five-year sabbatical in the oil industry. From then on a very large part of my time has been spent learning how to diagnose the environments of sediments from bore holes in the sub-surface. This is a far more challenging occupation for there are fewer data, the techniques are quite different, and the economic implications may be immense. The new edition reflects this experience. The introductory chapter includes a discussion of the techniques of sub-surface facies analysis, and subsequent chapters discuss the criteria by which each environment may be recognized in the sub-surface. of the chapters have been modified in one way or another; sections on Most of the case histories have modern environments have been expanded and some been extensively modified and, for the Captain 'reef', completely rewritten.

Book Sedimentology of Coal and Coal Bearing Sequences

Download or read book Sedimentology of Coal and Coal Bearing Sequences written by R. A. Rahmani and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-04-15 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent increase in the search for coal has initiated a dramatic growth in sedimentological research on the origin, formation and environment of coal deposition. This publication is concerned with perhaps the most important field of coal research, that of coal environments. This subject involves many interrelated disciplines, including the sedimentology, petrology, geochemistry, palaeobotany and palaeogeography of coal deposits. In the past, workers in these fields have operated independently, and only recently have their research efforts been integrated to provide a more comprehensive understanding of coal depositional environments.

Book Stratigraphy A Modern Synthesis

Download or read book Stratigraphy A Modern Synthesis written by Andrew D. Miall and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-03-02 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The updated textbook is intended to serve as an advanced and detailed treatment of the evolution of the subject of stratigraphy from its disparate beginnings as separate studies of sedimentology, lithostratigraphy, chronostratigraphy, etc., into a modern integrated discipline in which all components are necessary. There is a historical introduction, which now includes information about the timeline of the evolution of the components of modern stratigraphy. The elements of the various components (facies analysis, sequence stratigraphy, mapping methods, chronostratigraphic methods, etc.) are outlined, and a chapter discussing the modern synthesis is included near the end of the book, which closes with a discussion of future research trends in the study of time as preserved in the stratigraphic record.
