Book Advances in the Study of Gas Hydrates

Download or read book Advances in the Study of Gas Hydrates written by Charles E. Taylor and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-08 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book had its genesis in a symposium on gas hydrates presented at the 2003 Spring National Meeting of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. The symposium consisted of twenty papers presented in four sessions over two days. Additional guest authors were invited to provide continuity and cover topics not addressed during the symposium. Gas hydrates are a unique class of chemical compounds where molecules of one compound (the guest material) are enclosed, without bonding chemically, within an open solid lattice composed of another compound (the host material). These types of configurations are known as clathrates. The guest molecules, u- ally gases, are of an appropriate size such that they fit within the cage formed by the host material. Commonexamples of gas hydrates are carbon dioxide/water and methane/water clathrates. At standard pressure and temperature, methane hydrate contains by volume 180 times as much methane as hydrate. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has estimated that there is more organic carbon c- tained as methane hydrate than all other forms of fossil fuels combined. In fact, methane hydrates could provide a clean source of energy for several centuries. Clathrate compounds were first discovered in the early 1800s when Humphrey Davy and Michael Faraday were experimenting with chlorine-water mixtures.

Book Chemical Additives for Gas Hydrates

Download or read book Chemical Additives for Gas Hydrates written by Bhajan Lal and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a straightforward, informative guide to the chemicals used for gas hydrate formation and inhibition, providing the reader with the latest information on the definition, structure, formation conditions, problems, and applications of gas hydrates. The authors review not only the inhibitors used to prevent or mitigate hydrate formation, but also the conditions under which it is necessary to form hydrates quickly, which require the use of promoters. Various promoters are discussed, including their specifications, functions, advantages and disadvantages. The possibility of using natural reservoirs of gas hydrate as an energy source is also considered. Lastly, due to the difficulty of conducting experiments that reflect all conditions and concentrations, the book presents a number of models that can predict the basic parameters in the presence of the chemicals. Given its scope, the book will be of interest to professionals working in this field in an industrial context, as well as to researchers, undergraduate and graduate students of chemical engineering.

Book The Effects of Mixed Promoters on Gas Hydrate Formation

Download or read book The Effects of Mixed Promoters on Gas Hydrate Formation written by Jean-Sébastien Renault-Crispo and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Gas hydrates are studied for a wide variety of industrial applications extending from exploitation of natural gas to gas storage, transportation and separation. A stronger understanding of the kinetics of various hydrate promoters is necessary to pursue the large-scale implementation of such technologies. This thesis investigates gas hydrate growth and dissolution of different combinations of known kinetic and thermodynamic promoters. A novel method of analyzing kinetics for carbon dioxide gas hydrates is developed due to the high variability in gas consumption rates. A first-order response between gas consumption and induction time is shown for carbon dioxide gas hydrates. This is attributed to the different quantities of dissolved gas at nucleation owing to the different induction times. This behaviour is not observed for methane hydrates due to longer average induction times and lower methane solubility in water than carbon dioxide. This new method is used to inspect the carbon dioxide hydrate kinetics of adding multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) to a tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB) solution. The addition of MWCNTs does not result in a change in the actual hydrate growth rate but only in the dissolution rate, hinting that hydrate growth is not limited by carbon dioxide transfer at the gas-liquid interface. In another study, the kinetic promoter, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), is added to the thermodynamic promoter TBAB in a methane hydrate system over a range of different concentrations of both promoters. The growth rates of pure TBAB systems decrease monotonically with increasing TBAB concentration. The addition of SDS to a dilute TBAB solution initially inhibits hydrate growth rate until a threshold SDS concentration is reached at which the system enters a promotion regime. This effect is also observed at high TBAB concentrations whereby the thermodynamic equilibrium is changed. This study highlights the importance of considering the effect of mixtures of hydrate additives on the process of hydrate nucleation and growth." --

Book Gas Hydrate Growth Promotion

Download or read book Gas Hydrate Growth Promotion written by Jonathan Verrett and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A variety of applications have emerged for gas hydrates in industrial processes. However, to implement hydrate technologies, a fundamental understanding of their formation is required. This thesis investigates gas hydrate growth using low-dosage kinetic promoters as well as thermodynamic promoters. Two model surfactants are investigated to study the effect of kinetic promoters. Sodium dodecyl sulphate is used as a model anionic conventional surfactant and DOWFAX 8390 is used as a model anionic gemini surfactant. Results from this study show that surfactants do not significantly affect thermodynamic equilibrium and hydrate former solubility in methane hydrate systems. The promotion effect of both surfactants is studied over a range of concentrations and shows a sigmoid trend. Surfactants are found to significantly increase the gas hydrate former mole fraction during hydrate growth and are estimated to account for half of the increase in growth rate. The remainder of the growth increase is attributed to changes in the hydrate particle area. Thermodynamic promoters are investigated using semi-clathrate systems consisting of tetra-n-butylammonium bromide and water with a guest gas of either carbon dioxide or methane. Equilibrium temperature, pressure and solubility of all components are evaluated for these systems at hydrate-liquid-vapour equilibrium. These data are then used to develop and apply a kinetic model to estimate the intrinsic reaction rate constant of the carbon dioxide semi-clathrate system." --
