Book excerpt: Problems involving mechanics of partially saturated soil and physics of flow through porous media are complex and largely unresolved based on using continuum approach. Recent advances in radiation based imaging techniques provide unique access to simultaneously observe continuum scale response while probing corresponding microstructure for developing predictive science and engineering tools in place of phenomenological approach used to date. Recent developments with X-ray/Synchrotron and neutron imaging techniques provided tools to visualize the interior of soil specimen at pore/grain level. X-ray and neutron radiation often presents complementary contrast for given condensed matter in the images due to different fundamental interaction mechanisms. While X-rays mainly interact with the electron clouds, neutrons directly interact with the nucleus of an atom. The dual-modal contrasts are well suited for probing the three phases (silica, air and water) of partially saturated sand since neutrons provide high penetration through large sample size and are very sensitive to water and X-rays of high energy can penetrate moderate sample sizes and clearly show the particle and void phases. Both neutron and X-ray imaging techniques are used to study microstructure of partially saturated compacted sand and water flow behavior through sand with different initial structures. Water distribution in compacted sand with different water contents for different grain shapes of sand was visualized with relatively coarse resolution neutron radiographs and tomograms. Dual-modal contrast of partially saturated sand was presented by using high spatial resolution neutron and X-ray imaging. Advanced image registration technique was used to combine the dual modality data for a more complete quantitative analysis. Quantitative analysis such as grain size distribution, pore size distribution, coordination number, and water saturation along the height were obtained from the image data. Predictive simulations were performed to obtain capillary pressure - saturation curves and simulated two fluid phase (water and air) distribution based image data. In-situ water flow experiments were performed to investigate the effect of initial microstructure. Flow patterns for dense and loose states of Ottawa sand specimens were compared. Flow patterns and water distribution of dense Ottawa and Q-ROK sand specimens was visualized with high resolution neutron and X-ray image data.

Book excerpt: The drying of cement-based materials affects directly their durability, which has a major economic, societal, and environmental impact.The conventional experimental techniques such as gravimetric and sensor-based measurements, which are employed to study the drying-driven processes, provide only bulk-averaged or point-wise measurements which are not sufficient to characterize these processes. However, the significant advances in full-field techniques have allowed unprecedented insight into these local processes. Notably, for cement-based materials, x-ray and neutron tomography lend themselves as highly complementary tools for the study of their THM behavior. In fact, the high sensitivity to density variations of x-ray imaging gives access to the developments of fractures, in 4D (3D+time). On the other hand, neutron tomography allows the study of the evolution of the moisture field in 4D, thanks to its high hydrogen sensitivity.This Ph.D. takes advantage of these two highly complementary techniques, which, together with advanced numerical modeling tools, allowed for a novel experimental/numerical insight to study the drying-driven physical processes in cement-based materials.In this work, two experimental campaigns were performed at the NeXT instrument located at the ILL. In the first campaign, neutron tomography was employed to characterize the moisture distribution of a set of cylindrical mortar samples which were set to dry sequentially in a TH controlled environment (T = 20°C et RH = 35%) to represent different hydric states. The main phases of the mortar (aggregates, cement paste, and voids were separated, and saturation profiles were deduced and validated against the weight loss measurements. In the second experimental campaign, more complexity was added to the experimental drying conditions by heating concrete and cement paste samples up to moderate temperature which has led to the appearance of cracks in the later sample. The analysis of the acquired simultaneous neutron/x-ray data-set (once aligned in time and across modalities) allowed for the quantification of the 4D moisture profiles which were found to predict an overall water loss at hydric equilibrium coherent with the corresponding analytical analysis. In the cement paste sample, the x-ray dataset captures the evolution of an extensive cracking network, opening, and propagation toward the core of the sample. Then, a novel analysis procedure was proposed which allowed the extraction of these fractures and the analysis of their interplay with local drying as captured through neutron imaging.On the other hand, the numerical approach employed in this study consisted of improving the numerical model predictive capacity by assessing the implications of common simplifications on the modeling response. These common simplifications can be divided in three main categories which regard the consideration of gaseous transport modes, the TH and HM couplings, and the morphological description of the material. Quantification of these simplifications effects regarding the used model and the choice of TH coupling laws was done by comparing mass loss response surfaces in relative humidity and temperature space for multiple configurations. The results show relative error maps at early, mid, and late drying stages for every compared case. On the other hand, the simplification regarding the HM coupling was evaluated in a 2D mesoscopic simulation framework where an artificial concrete mesostructure had to be generated for cracking localization purposes. The cracking impact was then assessed both locally on the saturation fields and on the global mass loss response. Finally, a CT-FE mapping scheme was proposed which consisted of extracting the mesoscale morphology of concrete (aggregates and pores) from x-ray/neutron attenuation fields and presenting it explicitly on a FE mesh. This has permitted to perform 3D multiphase THM simulation of concrete at the mesoscale.

Book excerpt: Since the discovery of X-rays, transmission imaging has been used extensively for a variety of fields, taking advantage of the high penetrating power of X-rays. However, because it uses X-ray absorption to generate image contrast, X-ray transmission imaging has a drawback that its sensitivity is poor to weakly absorbing objects consisting mainly of light elements, such as polymers and biological soft tissues. Since the 1990s, X-ray phase imaging, which relies on the measurement of the X-ray phase shift (or X-ray refraction) caused by a sample, has attracted attention, because weakly absorbing objects could be imaged. Particularly in this decade, X-ray phase imaging based on grating optics has been studied actively thanks to its practical advantage that laboratory X- ray sources are usable, while other earlier techniques of X-ray phase imaging were developed and performed mainly in synchrotron radiation facilities. Therefore, grating-based X-ray phase imaging has attracted special attentions from the medical and industrial fields. Moreover, a similar technique is expanding to neutron phase imaging field for various other materials including metal. This proceedings volume contains 47 papers presented at the first workshop held in Tokyo to provide an opportunity for discussion and to promote new collaborations in this rapidly growing field.

The volume is divided into 17 Chapters. The first two chapters introduce properties of neutrons and neutron facilities, setting the stage for applications. Some applications rely on single crystals (Chapter 3) but mostly powders (Chapters 4-5) and bulk polycrystals (Chapters 15-16) are analyzed, at ambient conditions as well as low and high temperature and high pressure (Chapters 7-9). Characterization of magnetic structures remains a core application of neutron scattering (Chapter 6). The analysis of neutron data is not trivial and crystallographic methods have been modified to take account of the complexities, such as the Rietveld technique (Chapter 4) and the pair distribution function (Chapter 11). Information is not only obtained about solids but about liquids, melts and aqueous solutions as well (Chapters 11-13). In fact this field, approached with inelastic scattering (Chapter 10) and small angle scattering (Chapter 13) is opening unprecedented opportunities for earth sciences. Small angle scattering also contributes information about microstructures (Chapter 14). Neutron diffraction has become a favorite method to quantify residual stresses in deformed materials (Chapter 16) as well as preferred orientation patterns (Chapter 15). The volume concludes with a short introduction into neutron tomography and radiography that may well emerge as a principal application of neutron scattering in the future (Chapter 17).
