Book excerpt: The first installment in the new dark fantasy science fiction series set on a planet called Vulvar, where females rule and all males are enslaved to serve them. What if alien DNA was encoded in your genes and no one told you? Archaeology professor Tobias Hart once would have laughed at such a notion. Hart, orphaned as a small child when someone murdered his father and his mother disappeared without a trace, was reared by an aunt and uncle in upstate New York. Fortunately, after such a tragic beginning, Hart’s life is much improved these days. He’s recently completed a PhD at Princeton and received his first post in the academic world, a tenure-track appointment to teach at Stanford University. Hart is positive he is on his way to realizing his life’s dream, a tenured archaeology professorship at a prestigious university. Until he stops in southwest New Mexico to visit a Native American archaeology site on his way to the West Coast. There Hart’s life takes a most unexpected and dramatic turn. Camping overnight near some ancient cliff dwellings, Hart glimpses an alien spacecraft moments before the aliens abduct him. Soon he finds himself a captive on a strange, dystopian and barbaric planet where females rule and all males are slaves. As he struggles to figure out who abducted him and why, Hart becomes party to a shocking reunion with someone he hasn’t seen in over thirty years, his mother. She reveals that Vulvar is her home planet, and that Hart is half Vulvarian. Next she tells him the most disturbing thing of all. Over her objections, the powers that be have brought Hart to the alien world for use as breeding stock. Like all males on the planet Vulvar, Hart quickly finds himself enslaved, the property of a beautiful but ruthless Mistress. Just as Hart despairs and contemplates ending his own life over being used as a breeding animal and the other realities of the harsh life his captors have imposed on him, they offer him an opportunity to win his freedom. The group of physical, absentee Vulvarian divine entities need someone to find and recover a valuable ancient artifact. Because of his education and experience as an archaeologist, they deem Hart the only being on Vulvar qualified for the undertaking. The problem is they believe the artifact is hidden in the most remote and dangerous region on the planet. If Hart accepts the mission, he may not live to complete it. But, if he finds and recovers the artifact, the deities promise to return him home to Earth as a reward. Hart desperately wants to return home. He wants his life back. But with such an infinitesimal chance of success, is the opportunity at freedom they offer worth dying for?

Book excerpt: 'Crucial reading for us all' Stylist An inclusive and empowering manifesto for change in women's healthcare – exploring the systemic and deep rooted sexism within medicine, and offering actionable ways for women to advocate for ourselves and others and get the diagnosis and treatment we need. Have you ever been to a doctor and felt like you were being fobbed off or ignored? Did they belittle or overlook your concerns about your health? Ever been told you're just 'hormonal'? You're not alone. Women make up 51 per cent of the population and are the biggest users of healthcare services – for themselves and as mothers and carers. But all the research shows there are massive gender differences in men and women's healthcare. Our pain and suffering has been disbelieved; we are misdiagnosed, given tranquilisers when we need painkillers, antidepressants when we need HRT, and not trusted to make informed choices about our own bodies. As women speak out about their experiences of gaslighting and misdiagnosis, health journalist Sarah Graham investigates what it will take to bridge the gender health gap. Meet the patients, doctors and campaigners who are standing up and fighting back, and find practical tips on advocating for your own health. Be inspired by stories that will incite and offer hope. You're not alone, you're not going mad, and we believe you.

Book Love for a Deaf Rebel

Download or read book Love for a Deaf Rebel written by Derrick King and published by Provenance Press. This book was released on 2021-03-23 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Love for a Deaf Rebel is the true story of a tumultuous romance. With pathos and nostalgia, the author recounts his roller-coaster ride with Pearl, a vivacious deaf maverick, who, unknown to him, had paranoid schizophrenia. We follow their encounters through actual notes written before Derrick learns sign language; we go on their motorcycle ride to Mexico and Guatemala; we watch as the happy couple moves to Bowen Island, a British Columbia community with just three paved roads. Pearl and the author marry and build their dream home and hobby farm. They encounter one obstacle after another while building their life together as Pearl’s perception of reality—and, crucially, their perception of each other—begins to change. The author learns what it means to be deaf, what it means to struggle with mental health, and what it means to love such a woman unconditionally—the ecstasy and the agony. There are other books about discovering schizophrenia in the family and about deaf woman-hearing man relationships, but none that tells the true story of a woman who struggled with both. Book More Than a Woman

Download or read book More Than a Woman written by Caitlin Moran and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2020-09-15 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of the international bestseller How to Be a Woman returns with another “hilarious neo-feminist manifesto” (NPR) in which she reflects on parenting, middle-age, marriage, existential crises—and, of course, feminism. A decade ago, Caitlin Moran burst onto the scene with her instant bestseller, How to Be a Woman, a hilarious and resonant take on feminism, the patriarchy, and all things womanhood. Moran’s seminal book followed her from her terrible 13th birthday through adolescence, the workplace, strip-clubs, love, and beyond—and is considered the inaugural work of the irreverent confessional feminist memoir genre that continues to occupy a major place in the cultural landscape. Since that publication, it’s been a glorious ten years for young women: Barack Obama loves Fleabag, and Dior make “FEMINIST” t-shirts. However, middle-aged women still have some nagging, unanswered questions: Can feminists have Botox? Why isn’t there such a thing as “Mum Bod”? Why do hangovers suddenly hurt so much? Is the camel-toe the new erogenous zone? Why do all your clothes suddenly hate you? Has feminism gone too far? Will your To Do List ever end? And WHO’S LOOKING AFTER THE CHILDREN? As timely as it is hysterically funny, this memoir/manifesto will have readers laughing out loud, blinking back tears, and redefining their views on feminism and the patriarchy. More Than a Woman is a brutally honest, scathingly funny, and absolutely necessary take on the life of the modern woman—and one that only Caitlin Moran can provide.

This book is written out of both hate and love for the world As people, we are capable of both love and hate; amazement and disgust; fun and misery. So why do we live in a world that is constantly telling us to hate, both ourselves and others? We are told to be repulsed by our own bodies, bodies that let us laugh and sweat and eat toast; to be ashamed of pleasure; to be embarrassed by fun. In this brand-new collection, Hollie McNish brings her inimitable style to the question of what have been taught to hate, and if we might learn to love again.
